Podcast Awards nominations are open
Yes, indeed, we’re pimping for votes.
The second annual Podcast Awards is up and accepting nominations, and your FIR co-hosts would be delighted if you’d nominate us in the “Business” category.
These awards are presented at the Portable Media and Podcast Expo in Ontario, California on September 29 and 30. Both Neville and I will be speaking at the event.
So why are we pimping for your votes with this particular awards program? The Podcast Awards do use the same technique as some of the others we have dismissed—the ability to nominate and vote multiple times. The difference (at least, in my view) is that the people behind the Podcast Awards are upfront and candid about it. In fact, the program is subtitled, “The People’s Choice,” and works not unlike the popular People’s Choice entertainment awards in the US. Also, the rules are very clear and well-thought-out. And as podcast awards go, this one so far holds the crown for most prestigious.
So it just wouldn’t kill us to win, which would draw more attention to the show and bring us more listeners.
And that’s why we’d be truly grateful if you’d follow the link and nominate us. Nominations are open until July 15. (Follow the rules: You may submit nominations only once per day.)

FIR in Second Life
We’ve just set up shop in Second Life, the virtual world where there’s already a growing community of podcasters.

The FIR Shop is located on the ground floor in the Podcasters Mall on Podcast Island. If you’re a member of the Second Life community, teleport to the island at 139,75,25 and follow the red arrow to get to the store.
It’s pretty bare bones at the moment as the screenshot shows, but we’ll be spending a bit of time there in the coming weeks getting the place a bit more ship-shape. We’ll also be talking in upcoming FIR episodes about what we’re planning to be doing in Second Life.
We look forward to seeing you there - Shel Witte and Jangles Junot. No prizes for guessing which of us is which!

That’s it for Innovative Marketing Conference podcasts
Audio problem puts the kabosh on the conference’s second day
We had intended to post presentations from the second day of the 2006 Innovative Marketing conference, but it isn’t going to happen. I pulled up the files from the second day and found nothing on them. While Neville and I were conducting interviews with speakers, my digital recorder—a Marantz PMD-660—was hooked into the sound board in use for the public address system. When we arrived, I handed the Marantz to the sound guy, and I saw him plug it in. But either he had the output from the sound board going into the wrong input on the recorder or the sound board line out wasn’t set properly. In any case, there were a lot of big MP3 files, none of which had any sound.
Bottom line: The files that are currently up from the conference represent everything we have available. We hope you enjoy them!

Speakers & Speeches - David Weinberger at the CMO Summit: June 8, 2006
Speakers & Speeches - David Weinberger at the CMO Summit: June 8, 2006
Podcaster’s note: This is the the third in a series of talks given at the 2006 Innovative Marketing Conference that were recorded as Neville and I were recording our one-on-one interviews in another room. The volume on the recordings turned out to be very low, and I’ve been working as time allows to manipulate the files to make them listenable. In this particular talk, David Weinberger interacted with the audience for much of the presentation, although there were no microphones for audience participants. Weinberger did a good job of expressing the question in his answers, and I’ve bumped the audio for audience contributions (with considerable background hiss), but it’s listenable. I’ll continue posting these files as I’m able to complete them.
Content summary: David Weinberger, co-author of “The Cluetrain Manifesto” and author of “Small Pieces Loosely Joined,” is a regular writer for the New York Times, Wired magazine, and Salon. He also is a regular commentator on NPR’s “All things Considered.” He spoke on the afternoon of June 8 at the CMO Summit in New York on the first day of the 2006 Innovative Marketing conference, co-sponsored by Columbia Business School and Corante.
Notes for David Weinberger’s presentation
The new marketing department - does it even exist? Companies and agencies are struggling to find a new model that builds on the proven principles of the past while incorporating successful new practices to take them into the future. How does a company plan and allocate resources, human and otherwise, in a time of such disruptive change? How will the dynamics of this emerging marketplace impact the way companies are configured, how products are developed, and how brands are built? What does the marketing department of the future look like?

The new scarcity = attention: Competition is fierce and the market ever more dense with new products and services all vying for the attention of consumers. Media is increasing fragmented and complex, yet more networked than ever before. How then to differentiate, gain attention, and rise above the morass of options that inundate consumers. How do you change the way you communicate in an attention-scarce economy?

Models for innovation: Creating successful new products and services. New product innovations are increasingly involving co-creation with customers and partners. Temporary glitch resolved
You can get show #147 again
Apologies to those who have had difficulty getting show #147. The problem has been resolved and the file is available once again.
In a nutshell, we’re testing a new podcast stat service that’s in beta (which rocks, incidentally). The problem occurred when we made a change to our profile. Using the service requires that we redirect any references to the MP3 file’s URL through the service’s domain. When we made the change, the service picked up the previous URL instead of the original one, which pointed to the home of our MP3 files over at Libsyn. It took a while to identify the problem and then to get the service to let us update the profile with the correct redirect URL. But all is well now and everything’s working just fine.
We’ll report on the service we’re using once it moves out of beta; we’ve been asked to keep it quiet until then. But it definitely shows considerably more downloads of the show than Libsyn’s stats service.
