  1. Hi Shel / Neville,

Was just listening to Martin Davis’ comment about the issuing of video iPod’s in the UK and that they may incur taxes due to being benefits in kind. What a great point! It never even crossed my mind.

Since 2004, Activ-Media have offered a portable audio training / communications service, ‘Training on the Move’. (http://www.activ-media.com/imarco-pc/services/totm/totM.html).

In essence, the service works with organisations to augment training / comms objectives. Staff are issued with inexpensive MP3 players, which are sold to the client at around £25.00 / $45.00 / E 36 each. Typical projects average around 500 staff requiring units.

Whilst video iPod’s cost substantially more (and as such, are perhaps more liable to ‘benefit in kind’ taxation), no client has ever talked about staff being taxed for receiving the mp3 players we’ve sold them.

In fact, the biggest problem I ever experienced was when bringing just 40 units into Tunisia on behalf of the British Council for a social media training course. The customs officer confiscated all of them on the basis they might be FM radios (he couldn’t understand the MP3 concept, or my ability to explain it wasn’t sufficient). Getting them back the following day meant a trip back to the airport with the British Ambassador!

So, thanks again to Martin for making the point. It’s prompted me to think about the issue.

    All the best,

    Matt
