FIR Interview: Robert Scoble and Shel Israel, authors of Age of Context
Two men who have been at the vanguard of social media and the disruptive evolution that different ways of working and communicating have emerged in businesses everywhere over the past decade are Robert Scoble and Shel Israel.
Their seminal work Naked Conversations, published in 2006, shone a spotlight on the then-emerging world of blogging and the changes being wrought to business practices by enlightened individuals in organizations everywhere.
In their new book, Age of Context: Mobile, Sensors, Data and the Future of Privacy, Scoble and Israel widen their spotlight to examine five converging forces - mobile, data, sensors and location-based technology - that promise to change virtually every aspect of our lives.
In this near one-hour FIR Interview, co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz explore the themes revealed in the book with the two authors, discussing topics ranging from privacy to personal contextual assistants; and consider the self-publishing model the authors employed to bring their book to market.
"Be prepared to see the future in these pages," declares Salesforce.com founder and CEO Marc Benioff, writing in the book’s foreword. With over 100 5-star reviews on Amazon, it’s a view that many readers already agree with.
Age of Context is available now in paperback and ebook formats.

FIR Speakers and Speeches: Shel Holtz on social visual communication
On September 26, 2013, FIR co-host Shel Holtz spoke at a PRSA California Capitol Chapter‘s monthly meeting in Sacramento, California. The topic: social-visual communication—the rise of images and extreme-short-form video as a primary means of communication.
Brought about by the shift to content consumption via mobile devices, the social-visual communication space is currently dominated by services like Instagram, Pinterest, Vine and Tumblr. Images also dominate social networks like Facebook and Google+, earning engagement levels that often far exceed those of text-only posts.
In this presentation, Shel explains the rise of social-visual communication and explores opportunities for communicators to tap into the trend.
Shel also curates a Flipboard magazine on social-visual communication.

Introducing “FIR On Strategy with Andrea Vascellari”
By Andrea Vascellari, Host of "FIR On Strategy with Andrea Vascellari."
Every week, the For Immediate Release podcast brings us news, commentary and case studies about organizations and new emerging communication technologies - who’s doing it well and who isn’t.
This is actually why we all listen to the show, to learn more about "when" and "how" to use these technologies in our communication plans.
I’m here to introduce you to "FIR On Strategy with Andrea Vascellari", a new podcast in the For Immediate Release podcast network, that offers you guidelines and tips to help you plan, execute and manage your strategic communication plans.
I’ll be hosting the new podcast. The first episode will be published here on Thursday September 26, 2013.
Having worked in communications for a while now, I spent a lot of time studying, piloting and learning from many different communication plans. I understood what works, what doesn’t, where digital fits into the current mix and I understood which are the elements of a plan that are, almost constantly, overlooked by organizations.
Eventually over the years I developed, and kept improving, an adaptive strategy framework that helped me planning, executing and managing online communication plans more effectively and efficiently. With "FIR On Strategy" we will explore this framework.
Each episode of "FIR On Strategy" is dedicated to understand how the framework is structured and how it functions. You will learn how to avoid getting caught up in the digital hype that every day hits you, and your organization, with new solutions and focus on what can actually help you achieve your objectives.
With each episode I also release a post on my blog that includes an accurate description of what I’m sharing with you in the podcast.
So if you feel a bit lost, if you are new to this, or if the topics seem to be too complicated, don’t worry. You can take your time and listen to the show while you follow the post that I have already prepared for you. This will also save you time because you don’t need to take notes or write down everything I say in each episode: I already did it for you.
On "FIR On Strategy" I share my point of view but I want to hear also what you think, what you agree or disagree with, what’s missing or what can be changed. This is a good opportunity to learn from each other and to grow together.
I hope you will enjoy the show! Look out for episode 1 on Thursday September 26.
Andrea.

FIR Interview: Chris Muccio, author, 42 Rules for 24-Hour Success on LinkedIn
LinkedIn is, arguably, the premier social network for Business-to-Business (B2B). Over 200 million people have profiles on LinkedIn, but most put their information up with no particular strategy to get the most out of LinkedIn.
42 Rules for 24-Hour Success on LinkedIn, 2nd edition, discusses just this topic. In this FIR interview, correspondent Michael Procopio spoke with the author Chris Muccio about the concepts in the book. As the discussion was more an interview with Chris about how to manage a LinkedIn presence than directly covering this new edition of the book we’ve put this in as an FIR interview rather than a FIR Review.
Chris covers the common mistakes that can easily be fixed as well as more advanced tips on getting the most out of LinkedIn.

FIR Interview: Craig Jolley on marketing automation
The challenges of today’s marketer—particularly in B2B circles—have grown increasingly complicated. From altered cycles to the volume of information available to a prospect to a growing disconnect between marketing and sales, the complexities of marketing have made it harder and harder to handle without the aid of systems that can analyze data and handle a variety of behind-the-scene tasks.
This technology-enabled approach is known as “marketing automation,” something FIR listeners in the Google+ Community told us was of interest to them. In this FIR interview, co-host Shel Holtz spoke with his longtime friend, Craig Jolley, manager of business development at ngage Marketing Services about what marketing automation does and the conditions that have led to its adoption.

FIR Interview: Jean Valin and Dan Tisch on the Melbourne Mandate
At the World Public Relations Forum 2012 in Melbourne, Australia, almost 800 public relations practitioners endorsed the Melbourne Mandate, a call to action of new areas of value for public relations and communication management. It was co-created by 1,000 people from 30 countries over the course of a year.
In this FIR Interview, co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz discuss this Global Alliance initiative with the two architects of the Melbourne Mandate, Jean Valin and Dan Tisch.
The interview begins with Valin and Tisch explaining what the Global Alliance is and its work.
The two men outlined the purpose and scope of the Melbourne Mandate and its set of roles, responsibilities and principles designed to provide practitioners with a new mandate to define and maintain an organization’s character and values; build a culture of listening and engagement; and instil responsible behaviours by individuals and organizations.
The wide-ranging conversation embraced discussion on the Mandate’s three pillars of character, responsibility - in particular, about trust and ethics - and listening; the Integrity Index, a tool designed to measure whether an organization lives up to its stated values in the minds of its internal and external stakeholders; and the Professional Development Wheel, a guide to the skills professionals need in order to practise to the full scope of the Mandate.
Valin and Tisch also spoke of the challenges in bringing the Melbourne Mandate to the attention of a wider audience within the public relations profession, and stimulating broader interest in it.
