Introducing “FIR on Higher Education with Kevin Anselmo”

The FIR Podcast Network is pleased to announce a new podcast on higher education that will begin on December 26, 2013. Presenter Kevin Anselmo explains…

FIR on Higher education

How can academics effectively promote their ideas to general audiences? What are the best ways to teach social media and public relations in the classroom? What is best practice for communicators and marketers within the world of higher education? How will MOOCs and new technology impact the industry?

These are among the questions that we will delve into in my new podcast: FIR on Higher Education, which is part of the For Immediate Release podcast network. Each FIR on Higher Education episode will consist of an interview with a professor, communicator, researcher, administrator or a journalist, among others. I will also look to receive reports from guest contributors (if you are interested, please let me know).

Podcasts have been a tremendous source of learning for me. There are several shows I listen to regularly that are my means to free and on-demand continuing education. At the top of my weekly listening is For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report, a show hosted by two extremely knowledgeable communication professionals: Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson. Their weekly podcast is filled with all the latest news and insights regarding communications. I carefully listen to each episode and follow (and sometimes participate) in discussions that ensue in the FIR Podcast Community on Google+.

Shel and Neville decided to introduce new shows under the FIR name (which is already a very strong brand). In my opinion, this is a brilliant move. By bringing on shows focused on particular niches (such as strategy, internal communications and LinkedIn), the For Immediate Release podcast is extending its reach in a significant way. My goal with FIR on Higher Education is to complement this line-up of communication podcasts by offering a show particularly geared to individuals working within higher education. The industry has its own unique set of communications challenges and opportunities, and I intend to explore these different areas in the podcast.

As host, I will be looking to facilitate interesting discussions. It will be a great learning experience for me to interact and hear the insights of various stakeholders within higher education. If you are a dean, communicator, marketer, academic or administrator within higher education, my aspiration is that this will be a must-listen to show for you.

Shel’s and Neville’s show is brilliant not only for the insights they bring to the table, but because of how they leverage contributors and the overall FIR community. I would like to take a humble attempt to follow in their footsteps and foster a community with FIR on Higher Education. Therefore, if you work within higher education and would like to provide a regular update, please do let me know. In addition, feel free to pitch me stories and initiatives within higher education that you think should be covered.

The first episode of FIR on Higher Education with Kevin Anselmo will be posted on December 26th. Beginning in 2014, I will be publishing two shows per month. I am very excited about hosting this show, and am confident you will enjoy listening.

Look out for episode 1 on the 26th!

Kevin.

InsidePR Presents InsidePR 3.59: Trends and Fears for 2014

FIR Presents Inside PRWelcome to the first episode of Inside PR as an FIR Podcast Network show!

Martin here…

2013 is drawing to a close. And we know how busy people are with Christmas shopping, holiday parties and other seasonal celebrations. So we thought we’d keep it short and sweet and focus on one trend and one fear we have for 2014.

But first, I talk about PR Baton, a new initiative created by Dana Hughens, where PR people take part in a virtual relay on Instagram to visually showcase a day in the life of an industry pro. I was carrying the baton the day we recorded; here’s the photo I did to commemorate this episode.

Check out the PR Baton on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Now onto the show.

Gini’s Trend:
Agencies need to evolve or they will disappear. She references a study saying CMOs are unhappy with the roles ad and PR folks play in driving results for their organization because most agencies haven’t integrated digital with traditional and aren’t accountable for results.

Gini’s Fear:
Not being able to integrate the four media types – paid, earned, shared and owned – in a strategic way. PR especially needs to focus on learning about paid.

Joe’s Trend:
It’s going to be a year of big getting bigger; not necessarily for everyone’s betterment, but because there’s so much momentum in that direction. However, with that he sees an opportunity for independents who put their focus on innovation.

Joe’s Fear:
PR is going to become even more commoditized than it already is.

Martin’s Trend:
I harken back to 1999 and invoke another C word (and not content, communications or connection) – convergence. Next year is going to require a convergence of transmedia storytelling skills and agencies will have to take risks to find and build the right team.

Martin’s Fear:
I reference a recent blog post that says while social media is fast, relationships and trust still take time. That’s something I hope we don’t forget.

What trends and fears to you have for 2014? We’d love to hear from you.

Happy holidays!

FIR Interview: Oracle’s Jill Rowley on Social Selling and Social Business

“I think a social business at the foundation is a business that is collaborative, that is transparent; that is engaged with its constituents, whether they be employees, whether they be customers, whether they be partners or even influencers. Jill Rowley of Oracle was interviewed by Michael J Procopio, our correspondent, to get her views on social selling and social business. She is well qualified on these topics as she teaches social selling to the Oracle sales teams and has been doing social selling since before the term was popular.

FIR Interview: Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer on AirPR Analyst and the collaborative economy

AirPR Analyst

Back in August, FIR spoke with Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer, the co-founder and CEO of AirPR, a collaborative marketplace that connects startup CEOs in need of media coverage with small PR agencies and independent PR practitioners. Since then, the sharing economy has grown immensely (as evidenced by the launch of Crowd Companies, the business council for large companies to explore and share information about how they can participate in this burgeoning business segment. (We spoke with Jeremiah Owyang, the man behind Crowd Companies, in an interview published earlier this week.)

Fouladgar-Mercer notes in this interview with FIR co-host Shel Holtz that he and his co-founder envision four elements to AirPR. The marketplace was first. Now, the company has launched AirPR Analyst, a data analysis service that “tracks media activity and provides top-level, actionable insights into your PR efforts to tell you what is driving engagement and moving the needle in terms of traffic, conversion, organic search, and even revenue.” Sharam provides some insight into the service, discusses the growth of AirPR, and chats about the sharing economy in general in this wide-ranging interview.

FIR Interview: Joseph Jaffe and Maarten Albarda, authors of ZERO

ZERO"Our position is that a perfect storm is coming," say Joseph Jaffe and Maarten Albarda as an attention-grabbing way to start a discussion about ZERO: Zero Paid Media as the New Marketing Model, the new book by the two authors published by Wiley in October 2013.

It may already be here, adds Jaffe: "In the book, we introduce several key arguments - business, economic, consumer, media and creative cases - any of which could, by itself, be enough to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, but when combined presents a perfect-storm scenario."

In this FIR Interview, Jaffe and Albarda describe the central premise of ZERO to co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz, explaining their thinking and passion behind ZERO’s core principle: if media inflation continues to outpace and run away from economic inflation, the bottom may fall out the media model.

They explain the meaning behind each letter in the book’s title - Zealots (advocacy), Entrepreneurship (innovation), Retention (customer-centricity), and Owned Assets (direct-to-consumer channels).

The two men believe that "ZERO marketing" is all about slow burn and long tail. "It’s about using existing customers to gain new ones," they declare. "It’s about utilizing customers and advocates in innovative ways, leveraging existing assets as opposed to piggy-bagging on the borrowed interest and/or equity of middlemen."

Specifically written for C-suite executives who work for leading brands, ZERO: Zero Paid Media as the New Marketing Model is a ten-point action plan that responds to Jaffe’s and Albarda’s no-holds-barred call to action for corporations and their marketers to adapt or die amid an increasingly turbulent, changing, and dynamic media landscape.

FIR Interview: Jeremiah Owyang on Crowd Companies and the collaborative economy

Crowd Companies

Jeremiah Owyang believes the next phase of sharing is upon us.

The first phase was of media and ideas, otherwise known as social media. The second phase is the sharing of the physical world, what we call the collaborative economy.

Today at LeWeb Paris 2013 - the largest internet conference in Europe whose theme this year is ‘The Next 10 Years’- Owyang launches his entry into the second phase with Crowd Companies, his newest endeavor and what he describes as "a catalyst for change at large companies."

In this exclusive FIR Interview, Owyang tells FIR co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz about his vision for Crowd Companies leading the nascent collaborative economy into a more mainstream movement.

Owyang says that the primary focus of Crowd Companies is as a brand council that provides large enterprises with peer to peer knowledge, expert education from third parties and access to an innovation network of startups.

At launch today, Crowd Companies’ brand council comprises 20 large corporations including  GE, The Home Depot, Whole Foods, Intel, Hyatt, Ford, Western Union, Adobe, Nestle and Verizon.

Owyang says the council will focus on the Collaborative Economy Movement, addressing (and answering) questions including a foundational one - what role do companies play in this process?
