Randy Ksar on AMP Up Your Social Media

AMP Up Your Social MediaRandy Ksar is a Sr. Social Marketer and Real-Time Marketing Consultant for both startups and larger-size businesses focusing on social strategy, content marketing and real-time community engagement.
Randy has more than 20 year of experience with online marketing. He recently joined AMP Up Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss how to create a social media buzz using content and key influencers from within your organization.

“Find your key influencers, your storytellers, and use them as a brand for your company.” – Randy Ksar

For corporate social media managers, Randy offers these helpful tips you can start implementing today!

  1. Find the influencers within your company. Who are the storytellers? The good communicators who can influence the audience you are trying to reach? It’s not always the CEO. It could be someone who is an influencer to the CEO.
  2. Create internal content. You don’t need to spend a lot to create valuable content. Video record your internal evangelist talking about a new product launch, an event you have coming up, a conference you attended, etc. and broadcast that across your social media platforms.
  3. Encourage internal involvement by sharing your content with employees and stakeholders and ask them to share it too. Don’t be surprised if you start getting asked to create more videos once they learn you have a camera—everyone wants a moment in the spotlight!
  4. Build trust within your organization. Try new things. When you find something that works, show present it. Provide analytics to support your success and the trust will grow.

Randy loves chatting about social media so don’t hesitate to contact him on LinkedIn at http://www.linkedin.com/in/rksar, twitter @djksar or email him at rksar@landonc.com.

FIR Presents Inside PR 363: Where Does Social Media Belong?

FIR Presents Inside PRFirst things first, be sure to wish Martin Waxman a happy birthday in the comments!

Now on to the slightly less important stuff.

A couple of weeks ago, Sam Fiorella wrote a blog post called, “Why Your Social Media Team Should Be PR Professionals.”

As PR professionals, it makes sense we’d be curious to read more (and you will want to, as well).

If you’re like us, you’ll find yourself nodding all the way through his blog post.

Yes, PR pros know how to manage crises.

Yes, we are trained to manage reputations.

Yes, we know the right questions to ask to create a calm before the storm.

Yes, we can train pros in other disciplines to manage themselves appropriately online.

Yes, most of the knee jerk reactions that happen in social media are done so because the community management is handled by someone without these skills.

Now go to the comments and read what Danny Brown said.

“Disagree. Two words – Justine Sacco.”

We recently talked about the Sacco saga. She is a communications professional. She knew better. And yet…

Read the blog post, read the comments, and listen to what we have to say about where social media belongs.

Linked Conversations #9: Reputation Adviser Peter Vikstrom—2/12/14

Linked ConversationsWelcome to the latest episode of Linked Conversations with Chuck Hester.

In this episode I cover the newest LinkedIn feature: “How You’re Connected,” a tool that will allow users to figure out not only who is connected to someone you want to talk with, but how they are connected – giving you more information to build that new relationship.

Peter VikstromMy guest this week is Peter Vikstrom, a professional executive reputation adviser in Copenhagen, Denmark. We talk about his business philosophy that “your reputation arrives before you.”

I met Peter through a listener and friend, Lars Raee, who suggested I might want to interview someone from Scandinavia (Lars is in Denmark) to talk about the differences in social media and LinkedIn use in that area of the world. Believe me the conversation was an enlightening one!

You can find out more about Peter through his LinkedIn profile.

Don’t forget to check out LinkedConversations’ Google+ community and our LinkedIn Group: “The Podcast I Can’t Name Due to the Rules Group!”

FIR B2B #2: Does Content Marketing Raise the Bar for All Marketers?

FIR B2BPaul Gillin and Allan Schoenberg host the FIR B2B podcast. Discussion topics in this show:

The theme of this week’s show is content marketing, and we open with the results of a new study from AdAge that finds three-quarters of B2B marketers plan to increase content spending in 2014. At the same time, more than 64% of respondents plan to raise email marketing budgets, nearly as many said they would up investments in online video, and 58% said the same for social media. Are marketers spreading themselves too thin?

They may not have much choice. Content marketing is continually raising the stakes of the quantity and variety of content that organizations must produce to be heard above the competitive noise. Marketers need to differentiate not only with the subject of content they produce but also with platforms and media. It’s not surprising that media spending plans are growing almost across the board.

Want more proof that B2B and B2C marketing aren’t the same? Econsultancy recently asked marketers in both sectors what are the most exciting opportunities for 2014 . The answers differed sharply, with B2B marketers favoring content marketing and B2Cs liking mobile.

Which doesn’t mean mobile advertising isn’t relevant to B2B as well. Emarketer also reports that new research from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and Ovum found that marketers are overwhelmingly satisfied with mobile advertising. Our hosts wonder what opportunities exist there for B2B?

Ann HandleyThis week’s special guest is Ann Handley, founder of MarketingProfs and a thought leader in B2B content marketing. She believes content marketing and native advertising present new opportunities to B2B marketers to raise their profiles but they also present new challenges to produce differentiated and remarkable content. Ultimately, customers will benefit, Ann believes. She cites several examples of outstanding B2B content marketing efforts she’s encountered.

Dan Carter on AMP Up Your Social Media

AMP Up Your Social MediaDan Carter is the Managing Director of North America for Racepoint Global, an advanced marketing services agency, which guides people and brands, helping them navigate the rapidly changing waters and connect with people through meaningful content and experiences.

Dan has more than 20 years of experience in marketing & PR. He recently joined AMP Up Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss the social media at an agency level and to provide insider tips for in-house marketing departments to maximize their social media marketing efforts.

The thing with social media is you have to commit to it. It takes time. Social media should not be a thing you do off on the side; it needs to be fully integrated into your marketing function. Everything you do; from lead gen, to public relations, to traditional marketing, to advertising, to social, needs to be all linked together. You need to be saying the same thing across all channels (in different formats, of course), but the theme needs to be the same.

For corporate social media managers, Dan offers these helpful tips you can start implementing today!

  • What’s your theme? When creating a social campaign, it is important to identify your theme and the focus of your content.
  • Get organized. Really plan your content, the channels you plan to share it on and when you plan to share it. Develop a calendar. Once you identify your theme, decide how long you are going to run this campaign and then break it down into buckets. Carter uses the rule of 8: What content are you going to push at 8 weeks out? 8 Days out? 8 hours out? 8 minutes out? You start to bucket your content into buckets of 8.
  • Stick to it! Once you have your plan, make sure you stick to it. Your message will come across branded and consistent and it will be easier to leverage.

FIR on Higher Education – Episode 3: LinkedIn best practice in a higher education context

FIR Presents Higher Education with Kevin Anselmo

Many of us have benefited from the newly expanded FIR Podcast Network. These perks include enhanced learning and networking amongst the community. This is on display in episode 3 of FIR on Higher Education as Linked Conversations host Chuck Hester is interviewed on how individuals within academia can best leverage LinkedIn.

Chuck, a LinkedIn expert, will outline the rationale behind LinkedIn’s new university pages; how academics can best optimize their profiles to highlight their research and thought leadership; and how public relations professionals can use the social site to communicate news and information about their respective schools.

In our news and tips section, we look at how the Edelman trust barometer impacts higher education stakeholders, and Harry Hawk weighs the pros and cons of the HootSuite.com academic program, which allows college classrooms to use the HootSuite Pro for 90 days and offers a student certification.

Stephanie Newby on AMP Up Your Social Media

FIR Presents Amp Up Your Social MediaStephanie Newby is the CEO of Crimson Hexagon. Crimson Hexagon is a high-tech company based in Boston’s Innovation District, with global reach. Newby joined our host Glenn Gaudet on AMP Up your Social Media to discuss her investment in the data mining aspects of social.

Newby is deeply invested in social analysis. Crimson Hexagon collects, indexes and stores 500 million posts of social media every day. Since starting their data collection in 2008, they have stored more than 250 billion posts. This is a wealth of information for a marketer; they can extract the stuff that’s relevant and it has sufficient content and depth of meaning that makes it actionable.

Newby discusses the opportunities around mining social media data:

We sometimes call it the world’s largest focus group because what you have in that data is consumer opinions, on a very, very wide range of topics. We target marketers; because the marketers want to know what the consumer is saying about the brand, or their product, or their ad campaign, or the celebrity endorser.

About Stephanie Newby

Stephanie NewbyStephanie Newby is the CEO of Crimson Hexagon. Founded in 2007 and based in Boston, Massachusetts, Crimson Hexagon is the only patented social media analysis and Big Data analytics platform available today. They provide industry-leading social media monitoring and analysis software and services to global brands, agencies, media firms and their partners. Stephanie’s 20 year career prior to becoming an investor was in financial services. She has worked in all three times zones - in Sydney, London and New York. The majority of her career was with J.P. Morgan where she headed several global businesses (including positions as Global Head of Futures & Options, Head of International Private Banking, COO of Global Equities and Head of eCommerce) where she grew and managed revenue and expense budgets up to $500m.

If you are currently the manager of a corporate social media account, here’s Newby’s advice:

  1. Getting any kind of analytics is better than none. Understand how your consumers think and feel about your brand and then use that information to proceed accordingly.
  2. Experiment. Experiment. Experiment. Sometimes you have to be a little bit out there, a little bit edgy to get content to go viral, but always stay consistent with your brand!
  3. Understand your audience. Experiment with your messaging until you find a formula that works for your brand and engages your audience.

FIR Presents Inside PR 362: The importance of conflict in video storytelling

FIR Presents Inside PRSo you’ve made a video. And you’re disappointed that it just sits there, with few viewers and little discussion. Why do so many videos made by companies and organizations fall flat? In many cases, its because they lack an essential component of effective storytelling – conflict.

Think of any story you love and you’re sure to find conflict at its core. That’s what Mike Edgell, the Video Creative Director at 76BrandFilms, tells Martin Waxman and me in this week’s episode of Inside PR.

What are the essentials of storytelling? A hook, context, conflict, build, and resolution. Omit any of these and the viewer is lost, the narrative falls flat. Of these, the essential component, the one that drives the story, is conflict. And this can be a problem for brands who hear the word conflict and immediately run the other way. Who take a black and white view of conflict.

In fact, conflict arises in virtually every situation and with a nuanced approach, it can be built into virtually every video story. So, how does a brand do this? Mike has some tips.

  1. Find a conflict that the organization can overcome. An internal challenge can ring true and does not run the risk of pitting the organization against outside forces.
  2. Have empathy. Be sure that the conflict relates to the interests of your target audience. Don’t start with what the organization wants to talk about. Start with what the audience fears, wants and cares about. If tell your story with the audience in mind, your content stands a higher chance of resonating with them.
  3. Finally, make sure your conflict has some significant risk. There has to be a consequence to failure. Otherwise, why should a viewer care about the story? This risk can embrace both the loss of something and the continuing absence of something desirable. In both instances, tension can be built up and the situation resolved, providing the audience with a satisfying experience.

Simple rules often overlooked.

Listen to the full podcast as Mike develops these ideas and illustrates them with real life examples of videos that met the challenge of incorporating conflict to engage audiences.

Gini Dietrich fans, don’t despair. Gini couldn’t make this week’s recording, but she will return next week.
