FIR Presents Inside PR #382: Considering native advertising

FIR Presents Inside PRThis has been the summer of native advertising. More and more of it is showing up on more and more outlets. And it’s even broken through to our consciousness via mainstream media, thanks to John Oliver.

This week on the Inside PR podcast, Gini Dietrich, Martin Waxman and I talk about native advertising and the questions that have been raised about it. Is native advertising simply “disguising your ads to make them look like new stories?” Is it something insidious? Is it something with a short lifespan or a permanent fixture of the new media economy? How do we do it in a way that preserves the integrity of the news organization and the trust that we can place in it?

Yes, this week we’re all about native advertising on Inside PR. We hope that you’ll listen to and enjoy this full episode discussion.

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 36: August 26, 2014

Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael

In this episode, Mitchell and Michael talk with #ThoughtLeader Tatyana Kanzaveli (www.linkedin.com/in/tkanzaveli). As organizer of TEDx in the Bay Area and mentor to business startups, Tatyana shares her thoughts about what makes a good event, about the importance of social connections, and the use of analytics to everyday communication. Tatyana thinks #ThoughtLeadership is not single-dimensional, and likens it to a recipe with ingredients like expertise and innovation that are mixed together and sprinkled with communication. #ThoughtLeaders are not necessarily subject matter experts, but they have original ideas and are not afraid to speak their minds.

Tatyana KanzaveliIn the conversation, Tatyana shares some best practices in organizing events like TEDx. She reveals why she decided to make her TEDx shows even shorter than the usual 18 minutes, noting that limiting the talk to 12 minutes allows speakers to just nail it and pushes them to focus on the idea. The best way to organize successful events is to really care for the people who are coming to watch it and make sure you deliver the best experience for them before, during, and after the event. Tatyana says she always tries to find ways to connect people attending the event by setting up LinkedIn groups, sharing as many Twitter handles of all attendees, and using all communication channels to make introductions. She also emphasizes the importance of being connected, not for the sake of collecting followers, but because you want to learn more about people you admire. Communicating on social media is not about numbers, it’s about real people and interacting with those whom you share similarities.

Tatyana also answers questions about the tools she uses for social media monitoring, her tips about good mentorship, and why “TLC” is important. She shares how, after 20 years in the industry, she remains passionate about doing the things she cares about.

FIR B2B #14: Yes, You Can Be Funny Just Like Tim Washer

FIR B2BPaul again anchors the podcast solo this week. In this episode:

News & Trends

Google has taken it upon itself to move “unsubscribe” links to the top of emails, as if it’s encouraging marketers to clean out their email lists. At the risk of being a bit schoolmarmish, Google is actually enforcing some good marketing practices. No one should be proud of 20% open rates. Another Google innovation we like is phone numbers tied to AdWords. Marketers can now match phone numbers to click patterns to see which sequences prompt people to pick up the phone. This could be particularly useful to B2B marketers.

Could LinkedIn be a future competitor to Salesforce.com? It isn’t saying that at the moment, but some of its recent moves around content marketing and lead generation make LinkedIn look an awful lot like a CRM provider. Now we understand why it’s never licensed that user database.

Elisa Gabbert’s interview with Moz’s Erica McGillivray on how to manage online communities is worth a read for any B2B marketer who manages a LinkedIn group or other community. The principles that Moz practices - be responsive, reward contributors and don’t tolerate trolls - are appropriate for any situation in which many people gather online.

Special Guest: Tim Washer

Our special guest is Tim Washer, who may be the funniest person in B2B marketing. Washer’s breakthrough work was Mainframe: Art of the Sale, a hilarious serious of six videos he produced at IBM that spoofed the technology selling process and earned his employer praise for its willingness to laugh at itself. It also drove a 25-fold increase in traffic to the mainframe website.

Washer joined Cisco four years ago, where has continued his gift for absurdity with classics like The Perfect Gift for Valentine’s Day, from Cisco and Engineer Battles the World’s Most Rugged Router. He’s also appeared on popular comedy shows like Last Week Tonight, Conan, SNL and The Onion Sports Network. In this interview we discuss the mechanics of humor, the merits of lightening up and how B2B marketers can learn to be funny, even if they aren’t natural born comedians like Tim Washer.

You can find much of Tim’s best B2B work on his YouTube channel. You an also follow Tim on Twitter.

FIR Interview: Melissa Agnes and Gerard Braud debate “going dark” with social media in a crisis

Dueling headlines

Social media has become a standard component of crisis communication efforts. In an August 6 blog post, crisis communications and media training consultant Gerard Braud of Braud Communications argued that there could be crisis situations in which institutions would be best served by taking down their Facebook page or other social media outposts. Looking at the flood of negative, critical, and even outrageous comments left to Emory Healthcare’s Facebook page after the hospital began treating an Ebola victim, Braud concluded, “Sometimes in a crisis, you may find that it is in your best interest to rely on conventional crisis communications tools. It may be better to take your social media sites down completely until the crisis is over. If people need information, they are smart enough to find it on your primary website.”

Melissa Agnes, president and co-founder of Anges+ Day, a crisis intelligence consultancy, took exception in a response on her own blog. “Social media presents so many powerful opportunities to communicate and build trusting relationships with your audiences,” Agnes wrote. “Just because people may vent and lash out against your organization is not a reason to hide and refuse to communicate on the channels that demand communication these days. Doing so will only hurt your organization’s reputation.”

Braud and Agnes engaged in a very professional conversation in the comments sections of their posts. In this interview, FIR co-host Shel Holtz talks with both crisis experts about their points of view, where they agree and where they differ, the role of social media generally in a crisis, and how that role could vary depending on the nature of the organization and its social media presence.

Media Bullseye Roundtable 2014.9 with Guest Co-Host Doug Haslam

Media Bullseye Roundtable

In this episode of the Roundtable, I was joined by Doug Haslam to engage in our usual antics—I mean, discussion. We had a robust conversation about three topics (and ran about 3 minutes long as a result):

—The Edelman post about how mental health experts could participate in the coverage of the Robin Williams tragedy and the blowback that generated.

—The impact of Facebook’s news feed algorithm changes on nonprofits and others with limited budgets (and what it means about where you publish and promote content). Oh, and a bit on the Ice Bucket Challange in this segment, too.

LinkedIn’s plan to become more of a B2B marketing platform, and the broader implications of that strategy for the overall social networking marketplace.

Language translation has bedeviled communications and PR practitioners forever, but the rise of digital media has complicated the situation in a number of ways. Joining FIR co-host Shel Holtz are…

  • Renato Beninatto, chief marketing officer for language translation company Moravia. He is the co-founder of the first market research company focusing on language services. He was president and currently serves as an adviser to the European Language Industry Association is is a board member of Translators without Borders.

  • Iris Orriss, head of localization for Facebook, is also a board member at Translators without Borders. Formerly director of the business platform division international team at Microsoft, she brings more than a decade of localization-related engineering and managerial experience to her work.

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 35: August 14, 2014

Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael

In this episode, Mitchell and Michael hang out with #ThoughtLeader Janet Fouts. Author of four books and a recognized expert in social media engagement, Janet talks about the rights tools and attitude for a successful engagement on social media platforms and shares interesting insights about mindful social business, thoughtful conversations and more. She is excited to be on #TLL because she considers it a channel for real conversations. The show is not an interview with a script but is something that has real one-on-one conversations which Janet says is important if you want to achieve your goals in using social media.

Janet FoutsJanet defines a #ThoughtLeader as someone who people actually listen to and someone who cares about the people who follow them and engages with them. The #ThoughtLeadershipFunnel (http://www.thoughtleaderlife.com/thoughtleadershipfunnel) is a useful concept that should be followed by people who want to understand #ThoughtLeadership and become a #ThoughtLeader. Janet says companies should understand that social media engagement is not something you can buy in a box, unpack it and then automate your way out of it. People who engage on social media must do so in a thoughtful way and engage back, rather than just spew out sales talk. Automation can be acceptable if it is thoughtful automation. For busy CEOs, Mitchell suggests the AhaAmplifier (http://app.thinkaha.com) as a great tool for easy, two-minute engagement. Creating relationships and nurturing them is possible on social media, and businesses should be able to understand this. Janet considers social selling a really important skill that a sales person should have, including knowing how to find out about people. It’s true that social actually makes life so much easier and that starting mindful conversations on social can be beneficial for everybody.

Social media influencers – are they born or made?

University of Louisville Professor Karen Freberg discusses this question on FIR on Higher Education #15. Karen and her colleagues have done research on social media influencer personality traits based on a study of Brian Solis, Deidre Breakenridge, Jeremiah Owyang and Charlene Li. Karen shares the methodology to the research and its application for communicators.

She also discusses how she integrates social media into her classroom and how she uses Instagram as a professor.

In our reports section, I discuss the social channel academia.edu, while Harry Hawk keeps us updated about how he uses Vine in the classroom.

FIR Interview: Outbrain’s Jeff Pyatt on Outbrain, Content Marketing, and Native Advertising

OutbrainAmong the various classes of native advertising as defined by Edelman’s Steve Rubel, you’ll find “paid syndication,” in which “sponsored posts, articles, videos, slideshows and information graphics from corporations appear within the news section.” Rubel includes Outbrain among the examples of companies that “sprinkle sponsored links into a company’s earned or owned media in the footer of related news articles.”

Indeed, that’s precisely Outbrain’s approach. With dozens of algorithms that analyze user habits, Outbrain delivers a list of recommended links at the end of stories appearing on sites like CNN, Mashable, and Slate. Outbrain claims its links appear on 100,000 websites. The company serves over 150 billion recommendations and 15 billion page views per month, with a reach that extends to over 87% of the U.S. online population, not to mention international readers.

In this FIR interview, co-host Shel Holtz spends half an hour with Jeff Pyatt, head of Outbrain’s PR initiatives; he also addresses direct response clients. In this wide-ranging talk, Pyatt explains Outbrain’s value to PR practitioners and the kinds of content PR agencies generally pay to promote. The conversation also covers the ethics of native advertising, among other topics.
