FIR Live: Language Translation for Communicators
Photo: (c) CanStockLanguage translation has bedeviled communications and PR practitioners forever, but the rise of digital media has complicated the situation in a number of ways. The requirements for producing content right now have led to a need for almost instantaneous translation while access to the Internet has introduced languages spoken in regions that weren’t previously participants in the economy.

- Renato Beninatto, chief marketing officer for language translation company Moravia. He is the co-founder of the first market research company focusing on language services. He was president and currently serves as an adviser to the European Language Industry Association is is a board member of Translators without Borders.
- Iris Orriss, head of localization for Facebook, is also a board member at Translators without Borders. Formerly director of the business platform division international team at Microsoft, she brings more than a decade of localization-related engineering and managerial experience to her work.
- Sherrilynne Starkie, VP Content Marketing and Social Media, Thornley Fallis Communications (Ottawa office)

FIR Live returns with panel on language translation
FIR Live returns on Thursday, August 14, with an hour-long panel discussion on the challenges of communicating in multiple languages online. The web demands speed in publishing content, but if your markets include multiple languages, translation can keep you from posting quickly. Among the many problems technology has tackled, translation remains one that still requires time and expertise.

FIR Live returns with IABC’s 2014 class of Fellows
The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) has announced that five members will join the class of Fellows, the highest honor the association bestows on its members. Tomorrow at 2 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. PDT, 7 p.m. UK), all five will join FIR co-host Shel Holtz for the a session of FIR Live.
The 2014 class of Fellows includes…
- John Deveney, ABC, Sr. Counsel, Deveney Communication
- Tamara Gillis, ABC, Ph.D, Professor, Elizabethtown College
- George McGrath, Principal, McGrath Business Communications
- D. Mark Schumann, ABC, senior vice president, The Segal Group
- Jennifer Wah, ABC, principal, Forwords Communication
Brad Whitworth, ABC, IABC Fellow, will also participate in the free-ranging conversation about the state of communication and the meaning of the Fellow designation.
The conversation will be held on a Google+ Hangout on Air, which you can view live on The FIR YouTube channel. Afterwards, the session will be available as a YouTube video (which we’ll post to the FIR website) and as an audio file distributed via the usual FIR feeds.
The new Fellows will be recognized at next month’s World Conference in Toronto.

FIR Live #24: Hangout-On-Air panel discussion on influencer marketing
Our first FIR Live broadcast on the web in real time via YouTube took place on Saturday June 16 to address the topic of influencer marketing.
FIR hosts Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson led a discussion with an all-star panel comprising influential opinion leaders in the US and the UK:
- David Armano EVP, Global Innovation and Integration at Edelman and Logic + Emotion blogger.
- Gini Dietrich CEO at PR firm Arment Dietrich, Spin Sucks blogger and co-host of the Inside PR podcast.
- Andrew Grill CEO at influencer platform Kred and London Calling blogger.
- Zena Weist VP of Strategy at social software company Expion and Nothin’ but SocNET blogger.
We broadcast the discussion as a Google+ Hangout On Air, the newest version of Google’s video chat service on the Google+ social network, that lets you hold a public video discussion live via YouTube. A key feature of this new version is that it also makes a public recording of your session for viewing later, which you can do right here.

The lively - and, at times, passionate - discussion over nearly an hour embraced a wide range of topical issues concerning influence, influencer marketing and outreach, and more.
As Andrew Grill succinctly summarizes in his blog post about the event, he thinks it helped highlight some of the challenges facing marketers in finding influencers or advocates:
[...] One key take-way is the real need for education to dispel the myth that anyone with a high influencer score is automatically valuable to a brand. We need to go “beyond the score” to find out why someone is influential. As David rightly stated, even with the tools available, you still need humans who know what they are looking for to make sense of the information you uncover.
The other key takeaway is that you as a brand or agency need to know exactly what your goal is before you even start the search for influencers or advocates.
We also discussed the need for PR firms and agencies to engage with and employ bloggers and influencers.
The hashtag #firlive was a focal point for many insightful comments and questions as people watched the live broadcast and contributed their thoughts on Twitter - increasingly the shape of interactive online events these days.

FIR Live is back with all-star panel on influencer marketing
Has it really been 10 months since the last FIR Live?
It may have been a while, but when we decided to bring the real-time single-topic panel discussion back, we did it in a big way. We’ll be talking about influencer marketing—what’s hype, what’s legit, what works, what doesn’t—with an all-star panel that includes…

FIR Live will take place on Saturday, June 16 at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. London. We’re still working out which platform we’ll use, but we’re leaning toward a Google Hangout On Air. We’ll be back with details when we have them, but as with all FIR Live episodes, you’ll be able to weigh in with a call or comment in the chat room. For now, be sure to mark you calendars so you won’t miss this provocative and informative discussion about a fast-growing social marketing tactic.
