FIR Presents Inside PR #371: New makeovers for Google+ and Facebook
Martin, Gini, and I are back together again for the first time since we got together in Toronto for the launch of Gini’s new book Spin Sucks. (And by the way, if you haven’t had a chance to get your copy, I recommend that you do. It’s an excellent read.”)
This week, we ask, “Would you care if Google plus disappeared?”
Martin likens Google+ to vitamins. He knows that they are good for him, but he must remind himself to use it. It’s not part of his daily routine.
While agreeing with Martin that Google+ is not her first-choice social network, Gini says that Google plus is a large driver of traffic to the Spin Sucks website. So while it’s not necessarily a preferred site for its consumer experience, Google+ definitely does drive benefits to a content marketer.
As I look at my top four destinations, I see a real differentiation between Twitter and Facebook on one hand and Google+ and Feedly on the other hand. Twitter and Facebook are ideal for awareness. They tell me something has happened quickly after it does happen. Feedly and Google+, on the other hand, provide me with more in-depth and thoughtful analysis and commentary on developments that lead to better understanding.
We also talk about the FB newswire.
Gini sees its content as typical of citizen journalism – delivering reports on what people are seeing or experiencing in real time. Martin suggests it may be a lifestyle feed, not a news feed.
We’d love to hear your thoughts.
Would you care if Google+ disappeared?
What about FB Newswire? Have you looked at it? Do you find it useful?

AMP UP Your Social Media #24: Comparing Social Media Platform Benefits with Stephanie Frasco
Stephanie Frasco is the owner and social media consultant for ConvertWithContent.com, which focuses on social media and blogging consulting and management. Stephanie recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss how she helps lead her clients to social media success and different social media platforms and the benefits of each:
Be listening on Twitter for people talking about your brand and your business and engaging with them. It’s very effective and you’ll be surprised how to see many people will respond back and start following you, and maybe even increase your sales.
Stephanie details what social platforms she suggests for which type of business. She looks at each business individually and does a social media audit to see what’s happening currently around their business, industry or brand. She looks at the business’s audience and where they are already and what conversations are being had. Consider doing the same for your business. Here are a few guidelines that Stephanie suggests going by to see if your business is on the right social networks for your social media marketing goals:
To get the most bang for your buck:
- Facebook: If you have no fans, it’s going to take a while to be successful on Facebook, given the new guidelines and decrease in organic reach. There are a ton of people on Facebook everyday, so it is definitely worth being there, but just know it is going to take time.
- Pinterest: Suggested for e-commerce sites. One of the best ways to drive sales from social sales.
- LinkedIn: For B2Bs must be on linked in for a personal and a business standpoint.
- Twitter: For outreach of any kind or for targeted leads. You can search for conversations around your brand or industry and bring those people into your own conversations and drive them to your site. Twitter is also a great tool for customer service.
- Google+: Great for its SEO benefits. Google+ recently launched promoted posts for those with 1000 circles/followers. These promoted posts are linked to your GoogleAd Words account and your Google display network. Build up your circles so that you can take part in this effective promotion tool.
If you are spending all this time building this community, but they aren’t buying anything, you’re wasting your time. Make sure to be using a conversion tool so that you can your ROI. Stephanie uses InfusionSoft for tracking leads, to see who comes to her website and where they came from. She can even see how much each person spends on each network.

Is Google Plus Walking Dead? Meh…
Paul Gillin and Allan Schoenberg host the FIR B2B podcast. In this episode:
News & Trends
Launching a commodities exchange to serve all of Europe isn’t like doing the same thing in the U.S. Allan explains.
Is Google Plus really walking dead as TechCrunch recently declared? And does it matter? Our moderators agree that Google Plus has value for search visibility but many of its features aren’t really that groundbreaking. Google’s unwillingness to open the platform was an issue. Several of the more successful features will probably survive in other forms, but whether Google Plus itself remains as a product is probably not meaningful to most B2B companies.
Just four days after the TechCrunch story about Google Plus appeared, a research study reported that Google has overtaken Facebook as an authentication method on B2B sites. That’s interesting, but what value does it have?
Social Media Examiner has a terrific article about how to use the new LinkedIn publishing platform as a container for long-form content. The article removes many concerns about the positioning of the platform vs. a company blog. Bottom line: LinkedIn can be a complementary platform to a company blog for reaching a broader audience. That does raise governance issues, however, since posts to the LinkedIn platform are tied to the author, not to the company.
A discussion in the B2B Marketing Group on LinkedIn asked for suggestions on “the most ridiculous marketing buzzword of 2013.” There were some great responses: “influencers,” “need tunnel,” “partner,” innovation” and “disruption” are among them. One buzzword that irritates Paul the most is “content,” a term that reduces thoughtful insight to a commodity.
B2B media industry revenues grew more strongly in 2013 than in any of the previous five years. This is important because B2B buying is an important leading indicator of economic growth. A surprising statistic is the continued strength of events, which make up 45% of B2B media industry revenues. Events continue to be critical to the relationship-building that underlies B2B commerce.

FIR Interview: Howard Greenstein and David Mitnick of domainSkate
Hundreds of new top-level domains are being released by ICANN, the international organization that oversees Internet names and numbers. New domains like .guru, .london, .photography and .sexy are now available. And while companies aren’t exactly falling over themselves to pay the fee to register their trademarks and brands, other entities are reserving and registering domains—and they could be registering trademarked names.
According to a February Adweek story:
According to data from the Trademark Clearinghouse released Friday, unknown entities have prereserved their interest in registering domain names for every one of the nation’s 50 most valuable brands, as compiled by brand consultancy Interbrand. Research found that brands in the food and beverage space have left themselves most vulnerable with domains like pepsi.us, kfc.in, and kelloggs.net in the control of entities not affiliated with the brands.
Howard Greenstein—one of the co-founders of The Social Media Club—and attorney David Mitnick have just launched domainSkate, certified by the Trademark Clearninghouse to helpcompanies protect their brands and trademarks in the world of New global Top Level Domains (New gTLDs).
In this FIR interview, co-hosts Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson talk with David (the CEO) and Howard (the COO) about the need for reputation protection (including some cases of infringement that have already occurred), how domainSkate works, and how the launch of the business is going.

FIR on Higher Education #9: Interview with Gini Dietrich on Building Community

Gini Dietrich, CEO of Arment Dietrich and author of Spin Sucks, has just made FIR history! Gini has appeared as a guest on two different shows within the FIR podcast network in one month, providing great insights to two separate audiences.
Earlier this month, Martin Waxman and Joe Thornley interviewed Gini about her new book Spin Sucks on the Inside PR podcast (a show which Gini co-hosts). In the most recent episode of For Immediate Release on Higher Education, Gini shares tips and tactics for individuals within academia. She outlines:
- How professors can mobilize ambassadors to help promote their new books and how marketers / communicators can support the process.
- How to build community on blogs (whether as an individual academic or a marketer / communicator representing a school brand).
- How to deal - and prevent - crisis communications scenarios (such as the case of a University of Wisconsin professor whose political opinions in an assignment email to students spiraled into a controversy).
- And more!
In our reports section, I talk about visual communications within higher education, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk analyzes how YouTube is impacting youth culture and how that might influence college life.
About Gini Dietrich
Gini Dietrich is the founder and CEO of Arment Dietrich, a Chicago-based integrated marketing communication firm. She also is the founder of the professional development site for PR and marketing pros, Spin Sucks Pro, co-author of Marketing In the Round, and author of the new book Spin Sucks. Gini is a speaker, co-hosts the Inside PR podcast and can be found writing at Crain’s Chicago Business and in various PR and marketing blogs and publications. Learn more at the Spin Sucks blog.
