TV@Work #4 - 01/31/14 - Paolo Tosolini
Welcome to episode #4 of TV@Work. If you like the show, please share it with your friends by sending them to this link to the show blog.
This edition features an interview with Paolo Tosolini, Director, Digital and Emerging Media at Run Studios. Paolo is a true internet pioneer, and his work at Microsoft set the stage for using video as an internal communication channel in the digital age. In the interview Paolo mentions a great resource for anyone who wants to get the best video possible out of a smartphone. Here’s a link to an extremely useful Mobile Video Shopping List from the equally useful website, StoryGuide.net. I recently had the chance to interview StoryGuide founder Drew Keller for TV@Work for an upcoming episode of the show.
How do you like the show?
I’d love to hear your feedback. Ask me a question, let me know who you’d like me to interview, suggest topics for future shows. Share your comments through the usual FIR comment channels (further down in this post), or drop me a line at ron@ronshewchuk.com.
Until next time…..keep rolling!

FIR on Higher Education – Episode 3: LinkedIn best practice in a higher education context

Many of us have benefited from the newly expanded FIR Podcast Network. These perks include enhanced learning and networking amongst the community. This is on display in episode 3 of FIR on Higher Education as Linked Conversations host Chuck Hester is interviewed on how individuals within academia can best leverage LinkedIn.
Chuck, a LinkedIn expert, will outline the rationale behind LinkedIn’s new university pages; how academics can best optimize their profiles to highlight their research and thought leadership; and how public relations professionals can use the social site to communicate news and information about their respective schools.
In our news and tips section, we look at how the Edelman trust barometer impacts higher education stakeholders, and Harry Hawk weighs the pros and cons of the HootSuite.com academic program, which allows college classrooms to use the HootSuite Pro for 90 days and offers a student certification.

Stephanie Newby on AMP Up Your Social Media
Stephanie Newby is the CEO of Crimson Hexagon. Crimson Hexagon is a high-tech company based in Boston’s Innovation District, with global reach. Newby joined our host Glenn Gaudet on AMP Up your Social Media to discuss her investment in the data mining aspects of social.
Newby is deeply invested in social analysis. Crimson Hexagon collects, indexes and stores 500 million posts of social media every day. Since starting their data collection in 2008, they have stored more than 250 billion posts. This is a wealth of information for a marketer; they can extract the stuff that’s relevant and it has sufficient content and depth of meaning that makes it actionable.
Newby discusses the opportunities around mining social media data:
We sometimes call it the world’s largest focus group because what you have in that data is consumer opinions, on a very, very wide range of topics. We target marketers; because the marketers want to know what the consumer is saying about the brand, or their product, or their ad campaign, or the celebrity endorser.
About Stephanie Newby
Stephanie Newby is the CEO of Crimson Hexagon. Founded in 2007 and based in Boston, Massachusetts, Crimson Hexagon is the only patented social media analysis and Big Data analytics platform available today. They provide industry-leading social media monitoring and analysis software and services to global brands, agencies, media firms and their partners. Stephanie’s 20 year career prior to becoming an investor was in financial services. She has worked in all three times zones - in Sydney, London and New York. The majority of her career was with J.P. Morgan where she headed several global businesses (including positions as Global Head of Futures & Options, Head of International Private Banking, COO of Global Equities and Head of eCommerce) where she grew and managed revenue and expense budgets up to $500m.
If you are currently the manager of a corporate social media account, here’s Newby’s advice:
- Getting any kind of analytics is better than none. Understand how your consumers think and feel about your brand and then use that information to proceed accordingly.
- Experiment. Experiment. Experiment. Sometimes you have to be a little bit out there, a little bit edgy to get content to go viral, but always stay consistent with your brand!
- Understand your audience. Experiment with your messaging until you find a formula that works for your brand and engages your audience.

FIR Presents Inside PR 362: The importance of conflict in video storytelling
So you’ve made a video. And you’re disappointed that it just sits there, with few viewers and little discussion. Why do so many videos made by companies and organizations fall flat? In many cases, its because they lack an essential component of effective storytelling – conflict.
Think of any story you love and you’re sure to find conflict at its core. That’s what Mike Edgell, the Video Creative Director at 76BrandFilms, tells Martin Waxman and me in this week’s episode of Inside PR.
What are the essentials of storytelling? A hook, context, conflict, build, and resolution. Omit any of these and the viewer is lost, the narrative falls flat. Of these, the essential component, the one that drives the story, is conflict. And this can be a problem for brands who hear the word conflict and immediately run the other way. Who take a black and white view of conflict.
In fact, conflict arises in virtually every situation and with a nuanced approach, it can be built into virtually every video story. So, how does a brand do this? Mike has some tips.
- Find a conflict that the organization can overcome. An internal challenge can ring true and does not run the risk of pitting the organization against outside forces.
- Have empathy. Be sure that the conflict relates to the interests of your target audience. Don’t start with what the organization wants to talk about. Start with what the audience fears, wants and cares about. If tell your story with the audience in mind, your content stands a higher chance of resonating with them.
- Finally, make sure your conflict has some significant risk. There has to be a consequence to failure. Otherwise, why should a viewer care about the story? This risk can embrace both the loss of something and the continuing absence of something desirable. In both instances, tension can be built up and the situation resolved, providing the audience with a satisfying experience.
Simple rules often overlooked.
Listen to the full podcast as Mike develops these ideas and illustrates them with real life examples of videos that met the challenge of incorporating conflict to engage audiences.
Gini Dietrich fans, don’t despair. Gini couldn’t make this week’s recording, but she will return next week.

FIR presents Linked Conversations with Chuck Hester, Episode 8: January 28, 2014
Welcome to the latest episode of Linked Conversations with Chuck Hester.
This episode does not include LinkedIn news, per se, as I wanted to devote the entire time to my conversation with Peter Shankman, author, marketing pundit, frequent network news contributor, and founder of Help A Reporter Out (which he sold to Vocus in 2010).
Peter is currently the co-founder of Shankman | Honig, a global consultancy that empowers companies to better utilize their customer service to increase revenues and decrease marketing costs.
On the day of our interview, he had just come back from an on-air interview with ABC News about the Justin Beiber arrest, and prior to that he was on CNN that morning talking about the Super Bowl. He is definitely in demand, so I was honored he took time to be on the show!
With Peter, we talk about his pay it forward "Home for the Holidays" campaign, his take on LinkedIn as a marketing tool and his new mastermind groups he’s running around the U.S. Great interview, and definitely not without a few "did he really just say that?!!" moments!
More information on Peter can be found at www.shankman.com and his next Mastermind group is in Salt Lake City. More info is here: http://shankman.com/hey-salt-lake-join-me-for-my-next-business-mastermind-on-2-5.
Don’t forget to check out LinkedConversations’ Google+ community and our LinkedIn Group: "The Podcast I Can’t Name Due to the Rules Group!"
So thanks for listening and if you like what you hear, spread the word!
