Crescenzo, Aase to guest co-host upcoming FIR episodes

With Neville unavailable for episodes 461 and 462 of The Hobson and Holtz Report (June 29 and July 2) we’re pleased to announce special guest co-hosts who will fill in for those shows.

imageJoining Shel on June 29 will be Steve Crescenzo, a well-known consultant, writer and speaker who specializes in employee communications. Steve’s blog, Corporate Hallucinations, is a great read with more than a few laugh-out-loud moments. He also writes a regular column for IABC’s Communication World magazine and contributes to the CW blog.

On July 2, Lee Aase sits in the co-host chair. Lee is director of syndication and social media for the legendary Mayo Clinic, one of the first hospitals to embrace social media. Lee is now a regular speaker and frequent interview subject as the media reports and others report on hospital adoption of social media. Lee is also the force behind the Social Media University Global (SMUG), a blog that offers courses on business use of social media.

Neville plans to have audio contributions for both shows, as well.

Gary Vaynerchuk on the next FIR Live

FIR Live #15
Friday, June 26, 2009
10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. UK

An activity almost guaranteed to provoke reactions from people far beyond the PR community is that of pitching: the act of “stretching my imagination and getting me excited,” according to one definition via Twitter.

It’s part of the bread and butter of the PR business. It’s also an activity that many who do it get it very wrong indeed, say many who are on the receiving end, especially bloggers and others who use social media.

The next FIR Live on Blogtalk Radio on June 26 will look at PR pitching, taking as a specific example an email pitch conducted in early June on behalf of entrepreneur, personal branding expert and video blogger Gary Vaynerchuk.

We’re thrilled to have Gary as a guest on this live episode, together with John Cass whose post about the email pitch engaged a number of people in conversation with Gary; as well as John Bell, head of the 360° Digital Influence team at Ogilvy PR which produced Ogilvy’s Blogger Outreach Code of Ethics and Austin-based communicator Connie Reece.

FIR Live #15 is set for Friday June 26, 2009, at 10am PDT, 1pm EDT, and 6pm in the UK. You can take part in the show by calling in to +1 347 324 3723. You can listen in live at the same number as well as online at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/fir. You can also join in the chat by text in the chat room.

After the live show, the recording will be made available as a podcast as usual as part of the Hobson & Holtz Report.

We hope you’ll join us on June 26.

Break bread with us: FIR listener dinner set for June 7

There’s a full continent and ocean between Neville and Shel, so they don’t get together in the real world often. The last time was in London in September 2007. The next will be at the IABC World Conference in San Francisco. We’ve made a reservation for 20 at Town Hall, a well-reviewed San Francisco institution.

The dinner is set for 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 7. The opening reception begins at 7:30 and runs until 9:30, but we’ll leave a bit early. Town Hall is a short cab ride from the conference hotel.

Reserve your place at Twitvite:

PR and lawyers: Next on FIR Live

FIR LiveIt’s not unusual for communicators to feel stifled by corporate attorneys whose counsel, often viewed as contrary to the organization’s reputational interests, is rubber-stamped by CEOs. IN the next FIR LIveNeville and Shel will look at communicators’ perceptions of lawyers (the myths and the realities), explore ways legal and communications can work together, and discuss whether attorneys’ judgments are always best for the company. Our special guests include Helio Fred Garcia, president and founder of the crisis management firm LOGOS Consulting Group and executive director of the LOGOS INSTITUTE for Crisis Management & Executive Leadership, and a UK-based attorney to be named shortly

law academic and commentator Mike Semple Piggot, aka CharonQC, the man behind Charon QC The Blawg and Insite Law Magazine podcasts.

JUST ADDED: Jim Golden, Chattanooga, Tennessee-based attorney specializing in negotiation of early reasonable settlements in complex accident and commercial disputes, avoiding or shortening litigation and significantly reducing client costs. Adapting theory learned at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School to the practical needs of firm clients, he provides leadership in an area of legal practice he describes as “negotiation counsel.” Golden, who has represented the trucking industry, among others, has views about what companies can and could say that run counter to what you hear from most corporate counsel.

FIR Live #14 is set for Tuesday, May 26 at 10 a.m. PDT, 1 p.m. EDT, and 6 p.m. London.

Please join us with your questions, observations, and stories. Call in at +1.347.324.3723 to listen or to join the conversation, or listen in on the FIR Live page at BlogTalk Radio.

The Influence of the Global FIR Community

FIR surveyIn 2006, when we first surveyed the listeners of the For Immediate Release podcast that Shel and Neville started in January 2005, we learned a lot from what they told us.

Three years later, we’ve had a new learning experience as the results of the 2009 FIR Listener Survey provide us with some terrific feedback that will help us shape the development of the core FIR podcast, The Hobson and Holtz Report, usually referred to simply as ‘FIR.’

Last month, we asked FIR listeners to tell us what they think of FIR via a simple survey that contained around 35 questions. Most of those needed a click to select a response and we also had plenty of places where you could write freeform comment to say what you think.

The survey closed on May 1 and we’ve spent some time reviewing those results in order to quickly produce a preliminary report. We’ve shared that with our two sponsors – Ragan Communications and CustomScoop – and now we’ll share it with all of you.

Here’s the PowerPoint presentation on Slideshare with a 43-slide concise summary of the survey results including a description of how we did the survey and how many valid responses we received (69 in total):

You can download the PPTX if you like: it’s freely available under a Creative Commons copyright license. So we hope you’ll talk about FIR, too.

If you prefer to read the headline metrics about the survey, here they are:

  • Nearly two-thirds of listeners, 61% of you, listen to every episode of The Hobson and Holtz Report
  • 58% get hold of the MP3 files via iTunes; 16% subscribe to the RSS feed; only 4.35% listen via the Flash player on the website
  • Nearly half of you, 48%, listen to FIR on an iPod
  • 77% of you are men; 32% of you are aged between 25-34, and 31% between 35-54
  • Most of you (48%) are in the USA; 15% are in the UK followed by Australia and Canada at 9% each
  • 74% of you have budget responsibility in your jobs
  • 43% of you don’t describe yourselves as traditional communicators: job titles mentioned also include CEO, university professor, general manager, industry analyst, engineer, sales VP and marketing manager
  • The feature you like most in the podcast is Shel’s and Neville’s commentaries
  • Least liked is harder to pinpoint: a majority of you say you like everything :)
  • 58% of you have contributed a comment to the show
  • Nearly one-third of you, 30%, are active in the FIR Room on Friendfeed
  • 48% of you follow FIR on Twitter
  • Our sponsors’ contributions to each show attract the attention of 88% of you

One other metric some of our fellow podcasters might like to know – the top 5 other podcasts FIR listeners say they also listen to:

=1. Inside PR with Terry Fallis and David Jones (43%)
=1. Marketing Over Coffee with John Wall and Christopher S. Penn (43%)
3. Six Pixels of Separation with Mitch Joel (40%)
4. Managing the Gray with C.C. Chapman (34%)
5. Donna Papacosta’s Trafcom News (31%)

The data we have from the survey is a rich source of information, the views and opinions of our listeners that we’re paying attention to. We’ll be talking more about the survey and what people say in the coming weeks. Thanks again to everyone who took part.

If you have any views on these survey results, we’d love to hear them. Why not send in a comment to the show!
