Oops, I did it again

Libsyn’s stats tell me about 120 listeners downloaded episode #164 before I was informed that a flub was in the file. I swore I’d removed it, but somehow it found its way back in. In any case, I’ve edited and re-uploaded the file free of the mistake. It’s nothing serious, just another behind-the-scenes look at what you don’t usually hear on FIR, but we prefer the usual flawless production values to which you’ve become so accustomed.

2006 Podcast Awards - Results

The results for the 2006 Podcast Awards contest were announced late yesterday and the list of nearly all winners posted. FIR was a contender for the Best Business Podcast Award - but we didn’t win.

Winner of this category was Manager Tools, a weekly podcast focused on helping you become a more effective manager and leader, hosted by Mark Horstman and Michael Auzenne. A worthy competitor and a worthy winner.

We don’t know how FIR fared in the contest as voting details haven’t been published. What we do know is that, overall, the awards site received just under 8 million hits during July and August. That’s a lot of hits!

We would like to thank everyone who voted for FIR. We greatly appreciate your support.

Winners of the two top-level categories - People’s Choice and Best Produced Podcast - will be announced during the Podcast and Portable Media Expo late next month (Shel and Neville will be speaking at that event).

Warm congratulations to all the winners!

You may need to re-download #163

If you got episode #163 (August 14) before about 4 p.m. PDT on Monday, you may want to grab it again. The music behind the One-Minute News was turned way down, but during normalizing, for some reason, it returned to full volume, drowning out our voices. Of course, you may think that’s a good thing, but if not, we’ve re-done the file and re-uploaded it.

Nominated for 2006 Podcast Awards

Nominated for 2006 Podcast AwardsWe’re thrilled to announce that “For Immediate Release” is included in the final voting slate of nominated podcasts for the 2006 Podcast Awards contest.

The nomination period ended last week and the contest organizers have now posted all the nominated podcasts ready for public voting which begins in a couple of days.

FIR is one of the five contenders in the Business category. As with last year’s contest, we’re up against some stiff competition.

To everyone who nominated us - thank you.

Voting opens at 00:01 on Friday July 28 and closes at 23:59 on Friday August 11. Times are Hawaii Standard Time (GMT -10). Please carefully note the contest rules especially re the voting process.

All the contest award winners will be announced during the Podcast and Portable Media Expo in Ontario, California, on September 29. Whether FIR wins or not, Shel and Neville will be at that event as both are speaking there.

We’d be awfully pleased if you would vote for FIR in the Business category. Thanks!

Podcast Awards nominations are open

The second annual Podcast Awards is up and accepting nominations, and your FIR co-hosts would be delighted if you’d nominate us in the “Business” category.

These awards are presented at the Portable Media and Podcast Expo in Ontario, California on September 29 and 30. Both Neville and I will be speaking at the event.

So why are we pimping for your votes with this particular awards program? The Podcast Awards do use the same technique as some of the others we have dismissed—the ability to nominate and vote multiple times. The difference (at least, in my view) is that the people behind the Podcast Awards are upfront and candid about it. In fact, the program is subtitled, “The People’s Choice,” and works not unlike the popular People’s Choice entertainment awards in the US. Also, the rules are very clear and well-thought-out. And as podcast awards go, this one so far holds the crown for most prestigious.

So it just wouldn’t kill us to win, which would draw more attention to the show and bring us more listeners.

And that’s why we’d be truly grateful if you’d follow the link and nominate us. Nominations are open until July 15. (Follow the rules: You may submit nominations only once per day.)

FIR in Second Life

We’ve just set up shop in Second Life, the virtual world where there’s already a growing community of podcasters.

FIR in Second Life

The FIR Shop is located on the ground floor in the Podcasters Mall on Podcast Island. If you’re a member of the Second Life community, teleport to the island at 139,75,25 and follow the red arrow to get to the store.

It’s pretty bare bones at the moment as the screenshot shows, but we’ll be spending a bit of time there in the coming weeks getting the place a bit more ship-shape. We’ll also be talking in upcoming FIR episodes about what we’re planning to be doing in Second Life.

We look forward to seeing you there - Shel Witte and Jangles Junot. No prizes for guessing which of us is which!

That’s it for Innovative Marketing Conference podcasts

We had intended to post presentations from the second day of the 2006 Innovative Marketing conference, but it isn’t going to happen. I pulled up the files from the second day and found nothing on them. While Neville and I were conducting interviews with speakers, my digital recorder—a Marantz PMD-660—was hooked into the sound board in use for the public address system. When we arrived, I handed the Marantz to the sound guy, and I saw him plug it in. But either he had the output from the sound board going into the wrong input on the recorder or the sound board line out wasn’t set properly. In any case, there were a lot of big MP3 files, none of which had any sound.

Bottom line: The files that are currently up from the conference represent everything we have available. We hope you enjoy them!
