You may need to re-download #163

Volume problems required a re-do

If you got episode #163 (August 14) before about 4 p.m. PDT on Monday, you may want to grab it again. The music behind the One-Minute News was turned way down, but during normalizing, for some reason, it returned to full volume, drowning out our voices. Of course, you may think that’s a good thing, but if not, we’ve re-done the file and re-uploaded it.

  1. Another great show—at least the first half, which I’ve listened to so far.

I find the whole discussion of email interviews fascinating, since I’ve been on both sides of them. As a journalist, it makes your job easier when the subject types out his own answers. However, you don’t usually get very good quotes this way, especially if the interviewee first runs his words by his boss, the PR guy, and then the lawyers. Also, the interviewer is denied the opportunity to ask follow-up questions, except in a separate email transmission, which cuts down on spontaneity.

As the interview subject, which I’ve sometimes been, it’s hard work writing out the replies. I’d much rather be interviewed in person or by phone than by email.

Of course, anyone who is concerned about being misquoted can easily record the phone call. Today that’s a no-brainer.

As for the whole discussion that Lee started, based on Kathy Sierra’s post. That’s fascinating too. I’ve often said that we don’t really know what we want. Did we ask for fax machines or YouTube? No, but we got them and have surely found uses for them, although the fax machine is already obsolete.

Thanks again for another great FIR. I’ll listen to the other half tomorrow.

Glad you fixed the music bed under the one-minute news!
