FIR Presents Inside PR #395: The chat app is the medium

FIR Presents Inside PRMartin here.

Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope you had a fun and restful holiday.

In 2015, we’re planning to reinvigorate IPR by making it more topical and dealing with an issue or two a week. Stay tuned…

We start by congratulating Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson on the 10th anniversary of For Immediate Release! Here’s (hears?) to many, many more! We’re thrilled to be part of the FIR Podcast Network.

We also have some sad news. Michael Herman, a senior PR agency leader we know from Counselors Academy, passed away suddenly on Saturday at his home in North Carolina. Michael was the consummate PR pro, received PRSA’s highest honour, the Gold Anvil award, taught PR and never stopped learning, asking questions and helping people. Gini shares a personal memory of Mike on Pinterest and how they used to trade recipes. Here’s a moving tribute from Peppercom founder, Steve Cody. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Mike’s family and friends.

Now onto this week’s main topic. Over the break I noticed a number of what’s ahead roundups – including TechCrunch, AdAge and GigaOm – highlighted the renewed interest in chat apps as a key way for people to communicate and connect.

Which leads to the question: how can professional communicators, who participate in public conversations, navigate in the world of chat?

Gini: A big issue is anything you post online can and will be used against you. In other words, private isn’t necessarily private, anymore.

Joe harkens back to the early days social media where you had people talking to people versus brands talking to people. Now that marketers are monitoring public interactions, he believes ordinary people, who may not trust commercial accounts, are turning to messenger apps as a way to communicate.

Private or public messages? Which will be your default in 2015? We’d love to hear what you think.

One last thing. Many of you listen to us on iTunes and it would be great if you could leave us a comment or rating. Thanks!

FIR on Higher Education #25: PR Measurement Tips from Shonali Burke

You work hard to get a positive media placement or run a particular marketing / communications campaign. Then you wonder – or a colleague asks you – what is the concrete value of these efforts? On episode 25 of FIR on Higher Education, consultant and Johns Hopkins adjunct professor Shonali Burke offers her advice on how to answer this question.

Among the topics we discuss:

• How to approach PR measurement
• Evaluating which marketing / communications levers are having the most impact in getting students to apply and enroll in a program
• Resources for PR measurement
• How to teach students to be analytical PR professionals who are able to effectively measure the impact of their efforts

In our reports section, I highlight some of the things I have learned through one year of podcasting, while Harry Hawk reviews the learning management system Schoology.

About Shonali Burke
A veteran of small and large PR agencies, Shonali Burke is the President & CEO of the social PR consulting firm, Shonali Burke Consulting, Inc. She is founder and curator of the popular #measurePR Twitter chat and started Waxing UnLyrical, the popular blog community of like-minded professionals from around the globe.  She teaches at Johns Hopkins University and Rutgers University

Thought Leader Life with Mitchell Levy, Episode 54: December 29, 2014

Thought Leader Life with Mitchell LevyOur guest on 23 December was Ted Rubin (@TedRubin).

Ted is a leading Social Marketing Strategist, Keynote Speaker, Brand Evangelist and Acting CMO of Brand Innovators and in March 2009 started publicly using and evangelizing the term ROR: Return on Relationship™… a concept he believes is the cornerstone for building an engaged multi-million member database, many of whom are vocal advocates for the brand, like the one he built for e.l.f. Cosmetics as the Chief Marketing Officer between 2008 and 2010, and the one being built for the new updated OpenSky where Ted was Chief Social Marketing Officer until the end of April 2011. On May 1st, 2011 Ted announced leaving OpenSky and accepting the position of Chief Social Marketing Officer at Collective Bias (whose Advisory Board he joined in January 2011), a company he has worked closely with since it was founded by John Andrews who Ted met through the blogging community when he was leading Emerging Media at Walmart. Effective September 1st, 2013 Ted left his position at Collective Bias and is a Free Agent and Open to Opportunities. In the words of Collective Bias Founder John Andrews… “Ted, you were the vision, heartbeat and soul of Collective Bias, thank you for building a great company. From innovations like cb.Socially to the amazing relationships you built with the blogger community, clients and employees, you drove the epic growth. You will be missed!”

Ted RubinWith e.l.f. Cosmetics from 2008-2010 and OpenSky from 2010-2011, Ted has become known for his active use of Twitter where he has in excess of 100,000 followers and grew 60,000+ followers for e.l.f. Twitter handles in 2009, over 100,000 for OpenSky in 2010, and now well in excess of 1MM for Collective Bias and growing every day… all with deep engagement and interaction.

Many people in the social media world know Ted for his enthusiastic, energetic and undeniably personal connection to people. Ted is the most followed CMO on Twitter according to Social Media Marketing Magazine; one of the most interesting CMOs on Twitter according to Say Media, #13 on Forbes Top 50 Social Media Power Influencers, 2013, and number #2 on the Leadtail August 2013 list of Top 25 People Most Mentioned by digital marketers. ROR is the basis of his philosophy…It’s All About Relationships! His book, Return on Relationship, was released January 29, 2013.

At e.l.f., Ted’s responsibilities included communicating with and building e.l.f.’s client base (membership increased from 600k to in excess of 2.4MM during his tenure), leveraging brand equity through strategic marketing programs (with many major brands and publishers), and creating/developing/managing a major thrust into social media initiatives and partnerships and building the most highly respected social media presence in the cosmetics industry. In addition, the merging of traditional PR and the ability of social media to create/spread PR opportunities was leveraged to full effect under his tenure… a first for many companies and something which many are yet to understand.

Ted believes the key to continued success for any brand/retailer/etailer is identifying with the customer. Ted is quick to point out “listening is finally getting the respect it deserves through Social Media… listen and adjust your message to make it relevant to your consumer. Brand loyalty declines due to lack of relevance… a direct result of not listening.” “Number one is always try to understand who your customer is and stay true to your brand.”

Ted has a deep online background beginning in 1997 working with best selling author, entrepreneur and agent of change Seth Godin at Yoyodyne, which was acquired in Q4 1998 by Yahoo!

Ted served as a Social Marketing and Engagement Advisor to Big Fuel Communications until they were acquired in March 2011 by Publicis Groupe, and is on the Advisory Boards of Crowdsourcing Week, EvenVoice, Expressible, Flyplist, OpenSky, SheSpeaks, and Zuberance.

A native New Yorker, Ted holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics from Cornell University. He is divorced, has two teenage daughters, and lives in Long Island. Personal philosophy: Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

FIR Presents AMP Up Your Social Media #43: Simone Douglas on Getting More out of Social Strategies

AMP UP Your Social MediaSimone Douglas is a Social Media Specialist trainer, presenter, and coach as well as founding partner of Social Media AOK, a social media agency in Australia. With 17 years of specialty experience in corporate management roles, she is considered an expert in her field of social media, risk management, and marketing strategy. Simone recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss practical training techniques on how to get the most out of your social media strategies.

“Get into the habit of using LinkedIn daily…Send [those who have viewed your profile] a connection message!”

Simone discusses tips for getting the most out of your social media:

  1. Don’t forget the basics of business. Have a social networking marketing plan that keeps the human connection at the forefront. The way we do business hasn’t changed in terms of human context, and many overlook this when attempting to connect with clients on social media - and that oversight could be costly.
  2. Find your contact strategy. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, but here’s what I do: If someone sends you a connection request, you could potentially do business with them or ignore it - open yourself to connecting with them without a sale in mind. Grow your network with the idea that you’re establishing peer connections.
  3. Twitter is great for small talk. Use Twitter to reconnect and reunite with users! It’s quicker than email, and you can tag those users to grow your relationships.
  4. Remember the purpose. Investing the time, effort, and energy really boils down to more than simply connecting with a community. You’re looking for sales, at the end of the day! Build relationships that can gain you customers and that are congruent with clients you’re interested in, and foster their growth.
  5. Face-to-Face scenarios are beneficial. Connecting via social media is a great way for extending your reach and growing your network, but fostering relationships by setting up face-to-face contact where possible can help to strengthen those ties.

Simone would love to hear from you! Chat with her on Twitter or connect with her on LinkedIn.

FIR Presents Inside PR 394: The 2015 Public Relations Predictions

FIR Presents Inside PRIt’s the last episode of 2014 and we couldn’t let the year end without giving you our public relations predictions for 2015.

Before we get to those predictions, though, Joe talks about a few changes at Google, including updates to the Customer Journey to Online Purchase. For communicators, this is pretty interesting to check out because it helps you determine how a customer might make a purchase decision and how you can help them along through the process. No longer do you have to guess at the types of content that will help them make a decision.

The trends we discuss are:

  • The continual integration of PESO (paid, earned, shared, and owned media);
  • Return of big ideas a la West Jet Holiday Miracle; and
  • The quest for scale, bot for organizations and for content.

Of course, we talk about why we’ve chosen each of these and what they mean for the industry. They also all seem to intertwine with one another, which was not planned. We didn’t discuss beforehand which trend we had each chosen. Serendipity!

And, before you begin your holiday cheer, please join us in making fun of Martin Waxman for always saying, “At triple W insidepr dot C A” instead of just “insidepr dot CA.”

Happy Holidays to all of you! We wish you a great start to 2015 and look forward to hanging out in your ears for another year.

We’d love to hear what you think.

FIR Presents AMP Up Your Social Media #42: The Significance of Content Marketing and Strategy

AMP UP Your Social MediaBrad Young is a global content strategy leader for Dun and Bradstreet, leading the creation, curation, and editorial coordination of world-class, modern content and content experiences for customers, sales teams, partners, alliances and influencers. He also has 17 years of content and marketing experience, making him a leader in content strategy marketing! Brad recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss the significance of content marketing and strategy.

“Be absolutely relentless in asking yourself ‘Who is this for?’ and ‘What’s the value?’”

Brad discusses tips for content marketing and strategy:

  1. Become a powerful storyteller. When you have the mentality, metabolism, and mindset, you have an incredible opportunity to reach the most people in an engaging, revenue-driving way.
  2. Use modern technology. Your story is only as good as who it reaches. Don’t be afraid of utilizing modern technology and social media to get your content into the hands of the most people possible.
  3. Use data to advance relationships. Your raw data can have stories built around them, and use this data to move your company forward.
  4. Content marketing needs to be useful. Don’t make it all about you! Your content should be designed around the lifestyle of your target audience, and you don’t have to be promotional to sell your product.
  5. Story first, media second. Mine your content for all it’s worth, and create content calendars to drive your story forward. It may be appropriate in some instances to outsource your videos to other companies so you can focus on your story!

Brad would love to hear from you! Chat with him on Twitter or connect with him on LinkedIn.

Brad YoungAbout Brad Young

Brad is married to a wonderful wife and is the father of two daughters. He’s a positive thinker and progressive leader with a degree in journalism from Penn State University. He currently calls New Jersey home and roots for the Phillies in baseball and, of course, Penn State in football!

Media Bullseye Roundtable 2014.23 with Guest Co-Host Doug Haslam

Media Bullseye Roundtable

In this episode of the Roundtable, I’m joined by Doug Haslam of Stone Temple Consulting to discuss three topics (plus a bonus discussion of the current podcasting “boom”):

—What the FTC crackdown on social media disclosure means for communicators, especially those working in agencies.

—Whether the angry social media mob phenomenon is back—or ever went away—and how brands should deal with it.

—How the Sony hacker situation will impact communicators.
