FIR Presents AMP Up Your Social Media #41: Jerod Morris on Social Media and the Impact of Content
Jerod Morris is the VP of Marketing for Copyblogger Media after having been the content manager last year. He oversees marketing efforts and manages social media and their blog. He started by writing his own blog from home and after a successful and surprising post, saw the effects of social media and content marketing! Jerod recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss social media and the impact of content on the success of your strategy therein.
“Get a good third-party social media service that allows you to be efficient with your schedule.”
Jerod discusses tips for content marketing and social media:
- Don’t overthink it. When you’ve hit a writer’s block, become audience- and customer-focused. What are their questions? If you don’t know them, then it’s time to have a conversation to get to know your customer base!
- Start with a conversation. Your content is basically just a conversation with your customers. Talk to your market, and syphon your enthusiasm from those engagements!
- Don’t underestimate your usefulness. Nothing is too rudimentary or too mundane to share with your market. Many of the things that you may take for granted could be a complete mystery to your clientele.
- Find your ideal customer. Look at the person you’re trying to reach, and design your content and strategy on the level that matches those types of customers. Understanding your audience helps immensely in this step.
- Use visual cues. Podcasting allows for more personality and story telling, and many overlook the benefits of a podcast. At the same time, integrate infographics as well when possible. Even better, podcasts can sometimes get translated into an infographic for reuse later. Slideshares and anything visual usually works well across the board.

Kami Huyse is an award-winning leader in public relations, who writes and speaks frequently about the role of social media in modern communications. She brings two decades of experience to her role as CEO of Zoetica Media, where she connects clients with the communities that matter most to them. Like me, she went to college in the Washington D.C. area and graduated in 1994. She, however, was smart enough to choose a warmer climate when she was done with the nation’s capital, and she now lives and works in Texas.

FIR on Higher Education #24: Roland King on Op Ed Writing

Roland King, a consultant for PhairAdvantage Communications, is in the midst of analyzing every opinion editorial (op ed) written by a university president this past year. He’s analyzed over 350 op eds and gleaned some best practices and trends. (The following link details more about the university presidents op ed project). On FIR on Higher Education #24, Roland shares some of these insights. We discuss:

- examples of university presidents who are skilled at writing op eds (Franklin and Marshall University President Dan Porterfield for one)

FIR Presents Inside PR 393: Our naughty or nice PR list…
Martin here. This week, it’s Gini and me. Joe’s on the road traveling home.
And in the spirit of the season we thought we’d share our PR naughty or nice list for 2014.
First up: naughty.
And the lump of coal goes to…Edelman.
Really? Why?
Well, a Canadian company, TransCanada, hired the venerable agency to build support for a pipeline that will transport oil from Western Canada to refineries in the east. But when the agency recommended secretly using third-parties to attack the pipeline’s opponents and a document with the strategy was leaked to Greenpeace, TransCanada fired Edelman over ethical concerns.
Does this sort of program sound like a whisper campaign to you? It does to us.
Gini has written extensively about why whisper campaigns and other unethical tactics hurt PR. She likens the process to that of broken telephone, where what the last person hears is often very different from what was said at the beginning. Gini says that rather than sneaking through the back door, the profession should be open and honest. What do you think?
Now for our nice list.
Gini posed a question on Facebook asking people to nominate their suggestions the PR win of the year. She got a lot of replies including the Ice Bucket Challenge, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift (Gini’s selection on SpinSucks) and WestJet.
We chose WestJet for an imaginative follow up on its successful Christmas Miracle video. Once again, the company borrowed elements of classic holiday movies and showed, in an emotional way, how much they care about their customers and community.

FIR B2B #20: Indium’s Awesome Engineers

A new study finds that online customer reviews are just as important to B2B marketers as they are to B2C marketer. The finding underscores the need for B2B companies of all types to have influencer review programs.
Jon Spenceley, Community Marketing Manager at Vidyard, write an interesting piece entitled “The Optimal Length for B2B Videos Throughout the Funnel.” He suggests that while top-of-the-funnel videos should be limited to 90 seconds or so, lower-funnel videos can run much longer. It all depends on what kind of content the prospect is looking for.
Facebook is clamping down on overly promotional material in its network. The objective is to get marketers to pry open their check books, but this campaign might also drive more companies to use Facebook primarily as a customer service tool rather than a marketing instrument. Facebook also plans to launch a social network for use behind the corporate firewall, possibly as a test of a backdoor play against LinkedIn.
Twitter search now includes the entire Twitter history, which is awesome!

FIR Presents Inside PR #392: The algorithm called journalism
We start this episode with a burning question from Gini: Is lasagna pasta – yes or no?
Joe and I both say yes. And so Gini, armed with the information she desperately needs, is ready to take on her dinner menu. That is, unless you, our listeners, think otherwise. Please let us know.
And now back to our regularly scheduled programming…
Joe starts the show talking about the notion of who makes news decisions – editors or algorithms. This was sparked by an Emily Bell speech and spawned a discussion online as well as several posts, including one by Jeff Jarvis.
In her talk, Bell contends journalists, who once controlled the determination and distribution of news, have lost their hold or maybe they’ve been supplanted. Their replacements? In digital channels, many editorial decisions are made by people fine-tuning algorithms or the algorithms themselves.
Martin says on the editorial front, we’ve traded one concentrated group of publicly-traded companies (media) for another (social networks as new media).
Gini says there’s so much info out there that until something’s been confirmed by the fourth estate, we tend not to believe it. Traditional media is the filter.
Joe contends PR is in an ideal position to bridge the gap between journalistic decision makers and the way algorithms pick content. And by seeing both sides of the coin, we can still help get news in front of people either though media or their feeds.
And that’s where understanding influence and influencers comes into play. Martin mentions a new type of influencer: a young video game player with an engaged audience who was featured in an article in the NYTimes. And the profession needs to refine its approach to public relationship-building to take this into account.
Are algorithms the new equivalent of editors – we don’t know who/what they are and yet they make many decisions? Is that a good or a bad thing? We’d love to hear what you think.

Our guest on 29 November was Shel Holtz (@shelholtz).
Shel Holtz, ABC (Accredited Business Communicator), is principal of Holtz Communication + Technology. Shel brings to his assignments nearly 35 years of organizational communications experience in both corporate and consulting environments. He is experienced in employee communications, corporate public relations, crisis communications, media relations, financial communications, investor relations, marketing communications and compensation and benefits communications, . In addition to integrating technology into communications strategies, his expertise includes strategic communications planning, change management, organizational culture, business initiatives and communications research.
Before forming Holtz Communication + Technology in February 1996, Shel was senior communications consultant and the communications practice leader for Alexander & Alexander Consulting Group in San Francisco, California. (A&ACG has since been acquired by Aon Consulting.) Other positions include director of corporate communications for Allergan, Inc., a Fortune 400 pharmaceutical company, and at Mattel, Inc. He also has worked for William M. Mercer, Inc., ARCO and Transamerica Financial Corporation.
In addition to his consulting and development work, Shel is a regular speaker on topics surrounding the application of online technology to strategic organizational communication. He speaks regularly at IABC and Ragan Communication conferences. He also has been on programs for the International Quality and Productivity Center, The American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business, the American Gas Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts, the Association of California Water Agencies, and the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, among others. He also spoke regularly on the Lexis-Nexis touring seminar, “Communicating in a Wired World.”
Shel is a five-time winner of IABC’s Gold Quill award (most recently winning in 1997 for external Web sites), and was named IABC/Los Angeles’s Communicator of the Year in 1988. Shel served six years on IABC’s executive board, two as director of U.S. District 6 and four as a director-at-large. While a director-at-large, he held the Technology portfolio, among others. During his term on the board, he served three times as a member of the executive committee. He has also served as chapter president for IABC/Los Angeles and in a variety of other volunteer positions in IABC at the chapter, district and international levels. Shel earned his IABC accreditation (ABC/Accredited Business Communicator) in 1984.
In 2005, Shel was named an IABC Fellow, the highest honor IABC confers on its members.
Shel is a founding research fellow and advisory board member of the Society for New Communication Research” and membership on serves on the advisory board of The Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media.
Shel has applied online technology to his communication efforts on behalf of companies and clients since the mid-1980s. His most recent book is “Tactical Transparency,” co-written with John C. Havens and published by Jossey-Bass, an imprint of Wiley. Shel is also the co-author of “How to Do Everything with Podcasting,” co-written with Neville Hobson and published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill and “Blogging for Business,” co-written with Ted Demopoulos and published by Kaplan. Earlier books include “Corporate Conversations,” a guide to employee communications, published by Amacom. “Public Relations on the Net,” published by AMACOM; and “The Intranet Advantage,” publshed by Ziff-Davis Press. He also wrote the manuals, “Communication and Technology” and “Communicator’s Guide to Intranets,” published by Ragan Communications and “Writing for the Wired World,” published by IABC.
Shel graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in Journalism from California State University, Northridge, in 1976.

In 2013, Forbes reported that one in five Americans work from home. That is almost 30 million people who work and live in the same area. For some working at home is a dream come true - you can make your own hours, no pressure of adhering to office politics and you can wear whatever you want. For others, working from home can be a complete disaster, no structure can cause stress and lack of productivity.
Regardless of where you fall, it is important to keep in mind the possibility of working from home as you hunt for a job. More and more public relations and communications agencies are going office-less, take Arment Dietrich as a good example. And with an uncertain job market, a lot of young professionals are starting out their careers as consultants working for themselves.
This week, Kristine D’Arbelles and Julia Kent discuss a few good tips for working at home. We get our inspiration from Cupcakes and Cashmere. Blogger Emily Schuman shares her experiences and top 10 tips for working from home.

FIR on Higher Education #23: Social Media and Academic Freedom

Steve Salaita, a tenured professor, was all ready to make the leap from Virginia Tech to the University of Illinois. In fact, he had resigned from his job at Virginia Tech. But then, his job offer at U of I was rescinded, allegedly because of anti-Semitic tweets.
David Guth, a professor at the University of Kansas, posted insensitive tweets about the NRA following the Navy Yard shooting last year, which led to the institution suspending him and changing its social media policies.
Both these stories have led to significant debate about academics’ use of social media and academic freedom.
On episode 23 of FIR on Higher Education, social media attorney Scott Malouf offers his analysis and provides insights on using social media from a legal perspective. He also provides some best practice on how to go about drafting and reviewing social media policies.

FIR Presents Inside PR 391: Ch-ch-changes at F-F-Facebook—again
Martin here and apologies to David Bowie but Facebook’s at it again and I couldn’t help myself.
Earlier this month, the company announced that in January, 2015 people will start seeing fewer promotional posts from brands, that is, things that push you to enter contests and sweepstakes, install an app or buy a product.
Joe and Gini think this is a positive shift because it puts the onus on brands to earn their way into a user’s news feed with relevant and useful content.
I say this goes well with the way Facebook lets folks mute brands and friends we may not want to hear from so often. Then I wonder about coupons. They’re both commercial and yet important to some people. Is Facebook treating coupons as pure promotion too? We’re interested if any of our listeners have insights on that.
We switch gears and Gini talks about Facebook’s Rooms app, which is trying to connect people through a common interest and not necessarily their social graph. Gini likens it to the early days of Internet communities and anonymous posting. Here’s a blog she wrote about it and why you may not be as anonymous as you think.
Joe says Facebook’s two recent changes – offering a less commercial newsfeed and simplifying their privacy offerings – are driving more value to its business. He thinks they’ve got their mojo back.
I close off by talking about the latest meshmarketing conference and some highlights, including Ann Handley’s fun and informative keynote.
