FIR Interview: Connie Reece, Frozen Pea Fund - Feb 17, 2008

Frozen Pea FundWhat did it take to capture the imagination of people and inspire them to take action that, collectively, tranformed into a movement of support, including financial, that gathered spontaneous and rapid momentum primarily via the micro-blogging online community that is Twitter?

This is the story of Susan Reynolds, an artist, new media consultant and mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2007 and underwent a mastectomy later that month. From the outset, she blogged her experiences including about what she was using to ease her pain - bags of frozen peas.

It was Susan’s post and photo about a bag of frozen peas that started it all (explained here). Members of Susan’s Twitter community soon began adding peas to their avatar images; this supportive action quickly spread throughout a broader Twitter community and beyond.

It’s also the story of Connie Reece. A suggestion via Twitter for donating the equivalent of the cost of two bags of frozen peas to cancer research led to Connie Reece stepping into the peas picture with the formation of the Frozen Pea Fund, a fundraising effort for breast cancer research and programs through the American Cancer Society.

In a follow-up to a discussion about the Frozen Pea Fund in FIR #304 on December 24, 2007, FIR hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz talked with Connie about the fund and awareness-raising in a discussion that also considered how organizations could learn from spontaneous and authentic communication and the role of channels such as Twitter.

If you wish to support the Frozen Pea Fund, you can donate here.

FIR Poll: Best day for live call-in shows?

A poll to help us determine the day of the week for future BTR shows.

We had some feedback following Saturday’s live call-in show on BlogTalk Radio that Saturday wasn’t the best day for everyone. We chose Saturday so nobody would have to miss an hour of work (assuming that some bosses wouldn’t want you to). Let us know so we can make adjustments for future shows: What’s the best day for you?

NOTE: The application wasn’t working right so this post was closed until we could get it fixed. If you voted before Thursday morning, Feb. 14, please vote again.

Live call-in show set for Saturday, Feb. 9

The eroding wall between internal and external communications is our theme.

Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz will host a special live call-in edition of “For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report” this Saturday, February 9, at 10 a.m. Pacific, (1 p.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. GMT).

The call-in episode will focus on the blurring of the lines between internal and external communications. If you work in external PR, how do employees of your (or your client’s) company affect your communication efforts? If you work in internal communications, how does your role change in order to prepare employees for their growing role as points of contact and brand experiences in the social media sites where they participate?

Listen to For Immediate Release on internet talk radio

To listen to the show, just visit the FIR BlogTalkRadio page. To join in the conversation, pick up a phone and call 347.324.3723. If you’re not near a computer, you can call the same number just to listen to the show. (If you’re listening over the phone and want to ask a question, press ‘1’ to alert us that you have a question or comment.)

If you’re not able to participate live, you’ll still be able to hear the show through all the usual channels: It will arrive in iTunes or whatever podcatcher you use if you’re already a subscriber and you’ll be able to listen directly or download the show from the FIR blog if you’re not. The show can also be heard on the FIR BlogTalkRadio page.

We’re both looking forward to talking with you live on Saturday!

Get the FIR widget!

Multimedia widget took minutes to build.

I found a new service called Sprout that allows you to build a widget that plays multimedia, among a lot of other things. It’s remarkably easy to use, as I found out when I managed to get into the beta. It took about 10 minutes to build this widget, which plays the most current episode of FIR. As each episode is posted, I’ll just go into the widget builder and update the media link so it always plays the most recent episode. Just copy the embed code (click “share”) and visitors to your site or blog can listen to FIR directly from your page. Pretty cool, huh?
