Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 29: July 2, 2014

Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael

In this episode, Mitchell and Michael interview #ThoughtLeader Lydia Sugarman in what she describes as a 50,000 feet-level conversation. Lydia’s definition of a #ThoughtLeader is someone who can take prevailing tools and ideas and re-work them into something new that better serves people.

Lydia shares her insights about marketing automation and how companies, especially those transitioning from traditional marketing to automation, find the right technologies or tools and use these tools to be successful. In marketing automation, you can have a 360 degree view of the customer that will help you better define their needs and respond to those needs. Relating her point to the Thought Leadership Funnel (http://thinkaha.com/thoughtleadershipfunnel), Lydia points out that marketing automation allows a 360 degree view of customers in real time and enables the company to nurture the customers to becoming advocates.

Lydia SugarmanLydia notes that some companies or individuals get intimidated by the cost of investing in marketing automation. She cites a recent study that differentiated first-time marketing automation buyers with established marketing automation users. The study found that buyers are cost-conscious and customers are feature-focused. What this means is that companies need to look at marketing automation as a worthwhile investment and it sets the beginning of everything for a company.

The interview touches on the question of choosing the right technology for automation, and here, Lydia points out that technology is not the end-all and be-all because technologies are just tools, relationships are more important. Keep return on relationship in mind vs. return on investment. Another interesting topic discussed was the frequently asked question on whether all employees should be advocates, to which Lydia says that employees should always have the excitement and passion, and knowing that they are making a difference would convert them into advocates.

Mitchell asks, when automation allows a 360 degree view of a customer, how much of the organization should be able to access that view? Lydia gives an interesting response where, technically, not all need to see everything. Marketing, sales, even accounting can have access to that 360 degree view but they need permission to see certain information, and the marketing automation tool should be able to have that feature.

AMP UP Your Social Media #28: B2C Social Relationships with Scott Monty

AMP UP Your Social MediaScott Monty is the former Global Head of Social Media at Ford Motor Company. Ford is one of the leading automakers of the USA based in Detroit, Michigan that built its way to operating in several countries. Scott recently joined AMP Up Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss B2C social relationships.

“The great thing about social is that it’s not about the technology… it’s about a mindset.”

Scott offers tips for social media marketers on how to gain customers’ trust:

  1. Create human bonds. People have a hard time trusting companies, but they do trust people. Don’t focus only on transactional relationships, but also human bonds. When people feel like they are being listened to and appreciated, they will have stronger connection with the company. This will help with future prospects who may turn to those people for references.
  2. Put the company in control of social media relationships. Your company has a more meaningful understanding of your product than any social media agency will. You will understand how to turn the collected data into insights that can be processed by different parts of the organization. Agencies aren’t as reliable because they have a higher turnover rate and won’t be able to spread the data throughout the company in order to be successful..
  3. Pay attention to customers’ wants and needs. Pick a person to be the face of the company who will interact with individuals. Pay attention to where your customers spend their time, what they are doing, and what their expectations are when it comes to a brand. This will give you the opportunity to form a relationship that allows your customers to appreciate your company on a more personal level.

Scott would love to hear from you! Chat with him on Twitter or find him at http://www.scottmonty.com/

About Scott Monty

FIR on Higher Education #13: An Interview with Fortune Managing Editor Andy Serwer

Have an interesting pitch that might resonate with a reputable publication like Fortune Magazine / fortune.com? In episode 13 of FIR on Higher Education, Fortune managing editor Andy Serwer talks about how to approach this.

Andy also discusses the state of business journalism in 2014, how Fortune is innovating and its split from Time Inc.

Among his advice to commentators and professors on conducting interviews: “Have a focused idea. Have a real voice and have something that is differentiated. People’s attention spans are shorter and shorter and so you have to keep things succinct. There is a rythmn to having a conversation or interview.”

To PR professionals, he advises: “Do your homework. People write me and say ‘Dear Andrew’. That is my name but no one calls me that. When someone sends me that, it shows they don’t know me.”

After the interview, I provide a short report on Serwer’s actual talk to students at UNC School’s of Journalism, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk discusses how Facebook advertising can be leveraged by higher education communicators during crisis situations.

About Andy Serwer

Andy Serwer, the managing editor of Fortune, was named one of the 100 most influential business journalists of 2007 by NewsBios.com. Serwer is based out of Time Warner’s New York City office.  He has been managing editor at Fortune since November, 2006.

Shortly after graduating from Bowdoin College in 1981, Serwer joined the magazine as a reporter in 1984 and was later promoted to associate editor. Between 1995 through 1998, Serwer held the position of senior writer for the magazine. During his tenure at the magazine, he wrote a number of cover stories including ones on Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, John Chambers, Cisco Systems, among many others.

Before becoming managing editor of Fortune, Serwer was a regular contributor on CNN’s “American Morning”, and was a co-host of CNN’s “In The Money”. He has also appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America as well as a number of other national television shows including “The Today Show” and “The Tony Danza Show”. He has also written for Time, Sports Illustrated and SLAM Magazine.

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 28: June 25, 2014

Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael In this episode, Mitchell and Michael share views with #ThoughtLeader Peter Sterlacci all the way from Kyoto, Japan. As the person recognized to pioneer personal branding in Japan, Peter sees his work to be a “lot of fun with lots of challenges”. And even though he can speak Japanese (though not fluently), he is more inclined to work with non-traditional businesses and people who have a global perspective and who see the English language as a tool to be successful. He defines #ThoughtLeaders as experts in their field and who significantly make a difference by giving something of value that people can actually use in their business or personal lives. Peter says a #ThoughtLeader who wants to develop his/her personal brand must know what differentiates him/her from everybody else who has done something similar or has a similar skills set. And then you must be able to communicate that in a clear, consistent and constant manner, particularly online.

Peter SterlacciGoing deeper into the issue of personal branding vis-à-vis the company brand, Peter explains that in today’s world, companies have realized that allowing and enabling employees to bring in their personal brand and incorporate their authenticity into the company brand really works and builds business. This is the new norm as opposed to the traditional view that companies must disable their employee’s personal brand to protect the company brand. One effective way to bring out personal brand to help build the company brand is by joining groups on LinkedIn. In any case, LinkedIn has become the top resource for building anyone’s personal brand.

Commenting on the Thought Leadership Funnel (http://www.thinkaha.com/thoughtleadershipfunnel), Peter notes the importance of engagement and why it is critical in #ThoughtLeadership given that it is where people become truly, actively involved. He mentions one challenge in going through the engagement part, and that is how to sift through the people who are trying to engage with you to find those who are really providing value and addressing your needs.

In the interview, Peter also reveals his two unique mentors that helped him trail blaze in the field of personal branding in Japan. He also shares valuable tips on how to develop your personal brand and bring it out to the world.

To learn more about Thought Leadership and how it can help you be successful, subscribe to the channel: http://youtube.com/user/thoughtleaderlife.
Here are a couple of aha moments from the episode. See more in the “Aha Moments from Thought Leader Life” books available in the THiNKaha App:http://AhaAmplifier.com/.
• As a #ThoughtLeader, you got to have a personal brand. @happyabout
• Companies are now realizing that their biggest commodity is the people who work there and they want to retain them. @petersterlacci
• When you speak of a brand, try to just be something to some people, not everything to everyone. @petersterlacci
• Whether a product, a service or a person has some value to promise to the world and that’s what builds the brand. @petersterlacci

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 27: June 19, 2014

Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael

In this episode, Michael and Mitchell share insights with #ThoughtLeader Kim Chandler McDonald (@KimmiCFlatWorld). Kim is known as an innovation advocate, adviser, and strategist who recently won recognition for her book, “Innovation: How Innovators Think, Act, and Change Our World” (http://www.amazon.com/Kim-Chandler-McDonald/e/B00BOGRVWO). She defines a #ThoughtLeader as someone who is as engaging as they are engaged on issues, which could be a service, product, or idea. Kim believes that #ThoughtLeaders are and should be pleasant people, quoting the old adage: “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”

Kim Chandler McDonaldIn the interview, Kim discusses flat world navigation and why is it important in today’s global digital economy. In being the world’s first branded flat world navigator, she said she drew inspiration from Pulitzer-winning journalist Thomas Friedman, who wrote the book, “The World Is Flat.” In today’s world, traditional boundaries no longer matter, and globalization has leveled the playing field in business. The role of flat world navigators is to build bridges for businesses and be connectors and collaborators who use both traditional and innovative tools and technologies. Kim further explains that the effect of changing perspectives in terms of your professional and personal footprints in the global digital economy is that it brings about societal change. The younger generation is less likely to be going to war with someone who is their Facebook friend from across the world.

As the world’s first branded flat world navigator, Kim shares her secret on how she was able to establish relationships with more than a hundred hardcore innovators from around the world to make her book. Did she use a complex research methodology? Kim says the key to her achievement was that she was gracious in asking people to become involved in her project. She asked her interviewees nicely – and used her flat world navigation skills to make and maintain relationships.

Kim also shares why she believes it is no longer appropriate to call it I.T., or Information Technology; rather, it should called U.T., or User Technology. And the R.O.I should not just be considered a Return on Investment, but a Return on Involvement.

FIR B2B #11: Rewarding Marketers for – Gasp! – Sales Results

FIR B2BPaul Gillin and Allan Schoenberg host the FIR B2B podcast. In this episode:

News & Trends

The collaborative economy presents new opportunities for efficiency by leveraging resources across multiple clients so people, equipment and space don’t go unused. It’s a huge trend that’s being brilliantly documented by Jeremiah Owyang and exemplified by such high profile startups as Airbnb and Uber, and it’s coming to B2B. However, outsourcing your brand to people you may never even meet carries some risks. One company we know employs contract writers through a content marketing agency and has never even met some of the people who have been writing under its brand for years. We think there’s an ugly downside to the sharing economy that B2B executives need to consider.

McKinsey just published research about the digital firm of the future and the need for companies to embrace digital media at every level. Digital isn’t something you can bolt onto the company as an afterthought; it’s central to providing the collaboration that makes your internal processes more efficient and to forming closer bonds with your customers. We know that a lot of companies give lip service to digital integration but few have accomplished it. The recent Innovation report from the New York Times highlighted the fact that even companies that are thought of as leaders can be mired in the past.

Special Guest: Debbie Qaqish, Revenue Marketer

Our special guest is Debbie Qaqish, a 30-year veteran of B2B sales and marketing, co-founder of Pedowitz Group and a leader in helping organizations connect marketing to revenue. She’s also the author of the book Rise of the Revenue Marketer: An Executive Playbook.

Revenue marketing is about tying marketing activities to bottom-line revenue. Debbie notes that few marketers actually understand the sales organizations they serve. When incentives and organizational goals are tied to sales, then everybody becomes part of the marketing picture. There are two kinds of CMO’s, she says: those who put their heads in the sand and treat digital as a set of new toys, and those who understand that revenue marketing is a way for CMOs to gain a seat back at the executive table.

Marketing is undergoing a transformation that is no less dramatic than the one that took marketers from index cards to CRM systems. Many marketers are still stuck in the traditional creative role, but analytics has taken center stage and Debbie believes it requires a new set of skills. Bottom line, though: There’s never been a better time to be a marketer.

FIR Presents Inside PR 375: During a crisis, don’t leave your customers in the dark

FIR Presents Inside PRMartin here.

On today’s show, it’s Joe and me. Gini will be back in a couple of weeks. And throughout the summer, we’ll be having a few more two-handers when one of us is away – but we’ll keep recording!

We start off discussing the recent DDOS attacks on Feedly and Evernote that happened just before we recorded.

And we remark on how the two companies took different approaches when it came to communicating their situations to customers.

Feedly posted notifications on its Twitter feed and blog but nothing on Facebook.

Evernote updated its Twitter feed and used the same content on Facebook. But the company did not post on either of its two blogs.

Here are a few suggestions for communicating during a crisis that came out of our conversation:

  • Use your owned property – your blog or newsroom – to break the news and continue sharing regular updates there.
  • When posting updates on Twitter, link back to your blog to add details and context to the situation.
  • Personalize your message. Record a video or short series of videos to let people know what happened and the steps you’re taking to fix it.
  • By all means post on Facebook, but if you’re not buying ads, know that not as many people will see your news as on other sources.
  • Take a page from MSM and be consistent with your communications. Let people know when they’ll hear back from you. That way people will know you’re on top of things and more news will follow.

In the second part of the show, I offer my take on the 2014 IABC World Conference that was taking place in Toronto. One highlight was a talk by Leslie Quinton on the human side of crisis communications and how important it is to always remember your moral compass; that is, continue to ask yourself if what you’re doing is the right thing to do.

I also caught up with Shel Holtz who, if you haven’t seen him speak, is always a sharp, insightful and engaging presenter. He talked about visual storytelling and presented a strong case for why all communicators should move in that direction.

If you haven’t been to an IABC World Conference, it’s worth looking into because it offers you an opportunity to meet and learn from communicators around the globe. Next year’s conference is in San Francisco, June 14 to 17, 2015.
