FIR on Higher Education #20 – Professor David Burkus on the Myths of Creativity

How can we be more creative in our work? Whether you are a communicator wanting to come up with new ways to share thought leadership, a professor considering innovative ways to teach new concepts to students or a consultant / entrepreneur looking for new business opportunities, many of us are on the hunt for new ideas. On episode 20 of FIR on Higher Education, I discuss this topic with Oral Roberts University professor David Burkus, author of the Myths of Creativity.

David is one of the few academics I have come across who is leveraging the power of podcasting. He hosts an excellent podcast called Leader Lab (LDRLB) and shares his podcasting journey during the interview.

In our reports section, I outline why individuals working on projects should consider using Elance, while Harry Hawk and I share thoughts about LinkedIn’s new educational offerings (learn more in this Wall Street Journal article).

This episode is sponsored in part by Experiential Communications’ forthcoming Online Media Training Program for Academics.

About David Burkus
David Burkus is the Author of The Myths of Creativity as well as a contributor to Forbes & Harvard Business Review. Host of the Leader Lab podcast, David is an Assistant Professor of Management at Oral Roberts University where he teaches courses on organizational behavior, creativity and innovation, and strategic leadership. FIR Presents Inside PR #387: Is another tech bubble about to burst?

FIR Presents Inside PRMartin here.

This week, it’s Gini and me – as Joe was under the weather. (And you can hear from my voice that I’m just a tad jet-lagged…)

We spend the show talking about a couple of recent news items that caught our attention, and especially the notion that we may be headed into another tech bubble.

There certainly are a few signs. First, the New York Times announced it’s laying off 100 people from its newsroom staff. Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com and founder of The Downtown Project in Las Vegas, announced he was stepping down as project lead and then laid off 30 people. And VC Marc Andreesen feels tech startups are burning through cash at a rate similar to the 1999 tech bubble and that’s a cause for worry.

Martin references Clay Shirky’s Last Call post on Medium about the impending demise of print.

Shirky offers three pieces of advice to journalists to help reposition themselves and Gini thinks they apply just as well to communicators.

Get good with numbers – we’re in an age where we need to be focused on how the content and communications work we do becomes an investment, not an expense.
Learn to use social media tools to get ideas for stories. That’s something we’re good at already, but we need to continue to test and learn.
Collaborate – that is, integrate paid, earned, shared and owned programs and understand how the pieces fit together.
What do you think? Are we heading into another tech bubble? How will that affect the landscape for journalists and communicators? Can we redouble our efforts to adapt and retrain ourselves? We’d love to hear from you.

Media Bullseye Roundtable

FIR Podcast Network co-founder Neville Hobson joins the Roundtable this week to discuss a variety of topics of interest to public relations and communications professionals. Among the subjects we explore include:

—The impact of wearable technology on communicators.

—The role of social media in international political movements, sparked by an article about recent protests in Hong Kong.

—The ways in which communicators have tried to monetize content beyond simply being a marketing tool, inspired by a post on Spin Sucks by Gini Dietrich.

FIR Interview: Roger Bolton and Matt Gonring on Authentic Advocacy

Authentic Advocacy

Gauging the latest developments in stakeholder engagement theory and practice - and understanding their implications for those leading, managing and advising the communications function - is a primary goal of Authentic Advocacy, the latest research report from the Arthur W. Page Society.

Authentic Advocacy offers an in-depth look at how stakeholder engagement strategies are evolving and how Chief Communication Officers can best undertake them within their enterprise. It includes compelling findings about the nature of stakeholder engagement in today’s environment, learned through interviews conducted with CCOs at five leading companies - Cargill, Chevron, Lundbeck, Southwest Airlines and USAA. The report offers seven action steps for CCOs to consider when devising their approach to building and maintaining these critical stakeholder relationships.

In this FIR interview, co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz discuss the Authentic Advocacy report with Arthur W. Page Society president, Roger Bolton, and Matt Gonring, co-chair of Page’s Stakeholder Engagement Workstream, and consider some of the challenges and opportunities the report highlights for CCOs, and the transformation required in the way companies operate and engage with their stakeholders.

AMP Up Your Social Media #33: How to Involve C-level Employees in Social Media Marketing

AMP UP Your Social MediaBrian Basilico started his first business - a recording studio - at age 18. After working for AT&T, he worked in recording and eventually worked with an agency in interactive marketing. 13 years ago, he opened his own business focusing on the trifecta of websites, analytics, and social media. Brian recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss social media marketing and how it relates to C-level employees.

“Education is one of the best ways to get C-level people…[to use new social media techniques]. It’s even more powerful if you can show a competitor doing that!”

Brian talks about ways to help CEOs and businesses understand how to develop a social media strategy:

  1. Establish your market. Knowing how to sell your product and how to utilize your marketing platform is all based on who your market consists of. People want to connect with businesses, so developing a presence through content helps to put a face to your business. Even if your marketing team is posting on behalf of the CEO, take the time to connect with and establish your market. Look for opportunities to utilize social media components to improve upon your traditional methods.
  2. Post in industry-specific groups. Even if your content is mostly informational, find content that creates a connection and engages your market. Build a reputation with skilled people in the industry in order to gain traction in the market and to gain a response. If you don’t have an industry-specific group to post to, create your own!
  3. Plan ahead. When you attend conferences and industry-related groups, take the time to plan ahead and meet up with folks who plan to attend. Then, when you attend the event, you can solidify the connection and develop the relationship further.
  4. Maintain the relationship. While many companies may be overzealous off the bat when it comes to their social media marketing, many falter over time and forget to maintain the relationships they’ve created. Partners, vendors, and clientele remain loyal to those who maintain and strengthen the relationship over time, so don’t let these efforts fall by the wayside.

Brian would love to hear from you! Chat with him on Twitter or find him on Facebook!

FIR B2B #17: Sandy Carter on What Separates Pacesetting Companies From the Rest

FIR B2BPaul is solo again this week. In this episode:

News & Trends

A post titled “7 Web Design Trends That Are Outdated” on the Conetix blog covers many of the worst practices in B2B websites: boring stock photos, pointless oversized banners and (worst of all) auto-play videos.

Don’t short-change your video production by limiting it to a video platform. Many people would rather read or listen to your content than watch it, so give them a choice. “What to Do When Your B2B Video Marketing Doesn’t Go Viral” from the Online Results Blog by Whittington Consulting has some excellent ideas. Also check out Knowledge@Wharton for an excellent example of how to use multiple media together.

Kristen Vaughn took away some lessons for B2B marketers from the HubSpot Inbound 2014 conference and she shares them on the KOMarketing Associates blog. Malcolm Gladwell urged the audience to “be a deeply disagreeable person,” meaning have the courage to disagree. Matevz Klanjsek of Celtra likens prospecting to courtship. If you keep inviting people to “learn more,” they won’t.

The Content Marketing Institute (CMI) and MarketingProfs have just released their latest annual report on the state of B2B content marketing. Satisfaction with content marketing programs continues to be frustratingly low.

Vanessa DiMauro’s Big List 2.0: The Top 106 B2B Online Customer Communities is a terrific resource for marketers who want to find a community or who run one. If you’re a community manager, make sure you’re included.

Special Guest: Sandy Carter

Sandy Carter’s name is synonymous with the term “social business.” The 25-year IBM veteran has long been one of the company’s most prominent advocates for the use of social media, and she’s an accomplished practitioner with nearly 30,000 followers on Twitter. Sandy is the author of three book, including the the bestselling “Get Bold” in 2011. Her awards include: “Brand Leader of the Year” from the World Brand Congress, “Top 10 in Social Media” from Altimeter Group and Fast Company’s “Most Influential Women in Technology.” She was also named one of the “Ten most powerful women in tech” by CNN magazine.

Sandy is currently General Manager of Ecosystems, ISVs and Entrepreneurs at IBM, a role that has her working with many born-on-the-Web startups. She joined us for this interview a day after launching Digital.nyc, an online hub for New York technology entrepreneurs. Sandy talked with us about the latest IBM Tech Trends Report, which found that leading companies are embracing cloud services, leveraging partnerships for speed and innovation and adopting social business principles.

FIR Interview: Chris Christensen and Rick Calvert of BloggerBridge

FIR InterviewsChris Christensen was running into an experience many of us have faced. After he had left a town he was visiting, someone would email and say, “Oh, you were here? I would have loved to meet with you. Let me know when you’re back again.” Seeking a way to let interested people know in advance he was coming, his thinking evolved to include the ability to connect content producers with companies who want to tap into both their creativity and their expertise. New Media Expo CEO Rick Calvert had the same interest from the other side of the equation: wanting to be able to connect with people who were coming to town. The pair—already well acquainted through New Media Expo and the Travel Blog Exchange—joined forces to create a service that fulfills those needs.

BloggerBridgeBloggerBridge is a service that connects companies with “relevant bloggers, writers, podcasters, videographers, and other content creators,” according to the website, which goes on to suggest that “some people should not work together. Find the right match of skills, approach, content, and style for your brand.”

In this FIR interview, Shel Holtz talks with Christensen and Calvert about their vision for BloggerBridge, their experience building it, and their plans for the future.

FIR Presents Inside PR 385: Wearable Technology

FIR Presents Inside PRA couple of years ago, a study was released that showed how bad sitting at your computer is for your body. So bad, in fact, Google has claimed the phrase: Sitting is the new smoking.

This research helped launch wearable technology and now, with the new Apple watch, we have personalized and customized data available to us that makes us smarter about our health, nutrition, and overall well-being. It helps you understand just how little you actually do move during the day, particularly in our industry, and it helps motivate you to get up and move.

I have a pretty strong opinion about wearable technology and how it not only helps us live better lives, but how it helps communicators target more specifically our messaging. We also discuss it from the perspectives of fashion, function, and plain old cynicism.

Do you agree with Joe and look askance at it? Do you agree with Martin that it’s all about fashion? Or do you agree with me, the technology and geek hound?

We’d love to hear from you. What do you think about wearable technology? What do you think the future is? How can we use it in communications and across cultures? Is it cool or scary to get this kind of data about about ourselves? Can we use that data to improve our lives? Or is really just about being a wearable fashion hound?

Chats with Chip #1: Jonathan Bernstein of Bernstein Crisis Management

Chats with ChipIn this debut episode of Chats with Chip, Jonathan Bernstein of Bernstein Crisis Management joins me to talk about the journey that has allowed him to become one of the foremost experts in crisis communications.

PR Week says that Jonathan Bernstein is one of those people who should be on your speed dial in a crisis. A former journalist who came over to the Dark Side, he has been advising clients for more than three decades on every aspect of handling a crisis, from preparation to response and evaluation. He publishes the popular “Crisis Manager” newsletter, which he describes as being “for those who are crisis managers, whether they want to be or not.”

Jonathan’s career has followed an interesting path that made for some great conversation.  It includes time in Military Intelligence, as an investigative journalist, an agency executive, and even a period as Manager of Corporate Communications at Playboy Enterprises.

FIR B2B Extra: How Spiceworks Breaks the Media Company Mold

FIR B2B

Founded in 2006, Spiceworks broke the mold in both the software and media businesses. The company gives away a valuable systems management software package and monetizes the business through its large and active community of information technology professionals. Sponsors can buy their own outposts in the community, as well as the usual assortment of advertising vehicles, but they’re also encouraged to sign up their own employees to participate in discussions along with the members. Salesmanship is strictly prohibited in discussions and technical exchanges, and the staff at Spiceworks constantly coaches its marketing clients in how to be better community members.

Paul attended the annual Spiceworld conference in Austin last week and caught up with Spiceworks co-founder and COO Jay Hallberg for an update on the community and some tips on how marketers can build relationships with Spiceworks’ 3.2 million members.
