FIR B2B #18: John Fox on Why Marketers Need to Get Out of the Office
In this episode:
News & Trends
Only a minority of marketers are satisfied with their content marketing efforts, according to the annual Content Marketing Institute/MarketingProfs survey. But only about one-third have a documented content marketing strategy and even fewer measure ROI. Could there be a correlation there? If you don’t have measures of success, your program will fail.
New research by The Economist Group and Peppercomm finds that B2B buyers define “quality content” as that which “contains timely or unique information,” “helps me to understand a complex issue in simple terms” is interesting or presents a unique perspective. So there are some guidelines marketers can run with.
Marketo continues its creative series of e-books with a new one called Real Marketer Stories that presents one tip from each from 20 marketers. What’s cool is how Marketo packaged the piece in a colorful comic book format and designated each marketer with a “superpower.” Creativity often comes from taking a different approach.
It’s perhaps not surprising that 94% of B2B buyers report conducting some degree of research online before making a business purchase, and that 55% do so for at least half of their purchases. But what’s really interesting about this new research from Acquity Group is that more than 83% of buyers say they use supplier websites to conduct research. The bad news: only 37% say those resources are useful.
In an excellent example of how a company is getting outside its comfort zone to reach a new market, IBM is teaming up with Wharton to offer CMO education. Perhaps the forecast that CMOs will soon spend more on technology than CIOs has something to do with that.
Special Guest: John Fox
This week’s guest is John Fox, president and founder of Venture Marketing and a self-described
CMO-for-hire. John has led the launch or re-launch of 44 companies, resulting
in double and triple-digit growth for every client served. He’s also author of Marketing-Playbook, 102 Proven
Strategies to Grow B2B Sales and 99
Questions to Jump Start Your Partner Channel Brain. John thinks all the
talk of a radically new B2B buyer journey is overblown. The process hasn’t
really changed all that much, he says in this interview. He has provocative thoughts on what content really motivates buyers.

FIR Speakers and Speeches: In conversation with Millennials at Syracuse University London
The ability to effectively communicate across cultures is rapidly becoming a required competency – and not only for those who plan to travel, live or work abroad.
It’s the broad topic of study for a group of Millennials at Syracuse University London campus, aka the #CRS400 class, a group FIR co-host Neville Hobson had the pleasure of meeting on October 6, 2014. Invited by course professor Dr Barbara Gibson, Neville delivered a presentation to the class followed by an informal discussion that was recorded and is the content of this podcast.
Introduced by Barbara, the discussion includes a series of Q&A with Neville together with shared perspectives and insights on social media, online marketing, brand behaviours, and more from a group we frequently comment on in The Hobson and Holtz Report weekly show.
Now, here’s a chance to hear directly from a group of Millennials who tell us what they actually do think about social media and more.

FIR on Higher Education #21 – Harvard Business School CMO Brian Kenny on Marketing Leadership

How do you balance stakeholder priorities in leading a school’s marketing and communications operations? How do you build consensus without getting bogged down in politics?
These are among the questions addressed on episode #21 with guest Brian Kenny, the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Harvard Business School.
Brian provides tips on how to lead a marketing and communications office. We cover:
• The lessons Brian learned in launching a new brand campaign when he first joined Harvard Business School in 2008.
• How Brian mobilizes and empowers his team.
• How Harvard Business School balanced competing internal points of view and ultimately adopted a paid model for online courses.
• Advice on starting in a new role in marketing and communications.
In our reports section, I share findings from the Chronicle of Higher Education’s survey of Professors Who Taught a MOOC, while contributor Harry Hawk discusses big data and higher education.
This episode is sponsored in part by Experiential Communications’ forthcoming Online Media Training Program for Academics.

FIR Presents Young PR Pros: Good PR and Blogger Relations
In this episode our hosts Kristine D’Arbelles and Julia Kent talk about some good PR and how blogger relations made it happen.
Although not a completely new concept in PR and communications, blogger relations has grown into an excellent way to get your message out through a non-traditional gatekeeper. Back in the day, your only gatekeeper was journalists. If you wanted to be featured on the 6 o’clock news, you had to build relationships with the right journalists, editors, producers, etc. Today bloggers can be equally as powerful gatekeepers. In fact, some bloggers have a stronger and more dedicated followings through website hits and social media followers than the local newspaper. As a young professional entering their new career, don’t discount the possibilities of a good blogger relations strategy.
To demonstrate the possibilities, Kristine and Julia share their experience as bloggers. Julia shares her experience as a book club blogger and how it landed her an interview on TV as a subject matter expert. Kristine shares her Cardel Homes story. Cardel, a local home builder, invited bloggers and their spouses to truly experience what a Cardel home has to offer - and what better way then to host a small get together complete with wine and delicious food. Bloggers got to experience first hand the versatility of the home. The Cardel example shows PR professionals and communicators that using blogger relations can go beyond the basic “pitch” and the online world.
The other lesson learned here is that young professionals are encouraged to take advantage of the blogger relations trend in PR and communications to make a name for themselves as they build a career. Improve your writing skills and get experience in social media strategies by building your own strategy to gain new followers and readers.
What about you? Have you started a blog to help build your personal brand? Do you have a good blogger relations story to share?

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 43: October 8, 2014
In this episode of Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael (#TLL) we interview
In this episode, Mitchell and Michael hang out with #ThoughtLeader Martin Jones (@martinjonesaz) of Cox Communications (http://www.cox.com). Martin gives valuable insider advice on how to engage with over a million fans on different social media platforms and make content that is relevant to entire communities. He notes that Cox Communications’ #ThoughtLeadership stems from the fact that it is in a good vantage point and has a unique opportunity to see what’s happening in the digital marketing world which it then shares with the business community through curated content. Martin relates how content continues to evolve and why businesses should strive to create a culture of content in which every level of the organization becomes involved in content creation and distribution. He notes that evolution of content for any organization is a process and does not happen overnight.
As the editor of Cox Communication’s business blog, CoxBLUE.com, Martin shares how content creation and management for the company has evolved into something that serves not only the company but the whole business community and emphasizes that CoxBLUE was created to guide small businesses to grow and revive their business. In the conversation, we learn strategies on how to develop content that will allow companies to hurdle the challenge of coming up with good content from week to week. What Martin’s team does is to agree on a pillar or a centerpiece theme big enough to cover three months of content and broken down into small pieces of content to be featured weekly. The conversation also touched on other interesting topics like new trends on social media and which platforms to look out for.
