FIR Interview: A conversation with Mitch Joel in London

Neville Hobson and Mitch JoelDubbed the "Rock Star of Digital Marketing," Canada’s Mitch Joel has been named one of the most influential authorities on blog marketing in the world. He is president of Twist Image, a digital marketing agency headquartered in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

A blogger since 2003, a podcaster since 2006 and a best-selling author since 2009, Mitch and FIR co-host Neville Hobson met up in London over breakfast on November 18, 2010.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Joel (pictured above right) explains why brands can’t be human. He talks about Six Pixels of Separation, the book he wrote in 2009 (now published in ten languages and just released in paperback) and expounds on the intrinsic connections between people. He gives his impressions of the new Google operating system and argues that the OS is the platform as he suggests what’s coming in the mobile space. And much more.

He has been the co-founder and leader of successful award-winning PR consultancies in the United States, Japan, Korea and Canada.  An experienced crisis communications practitioner, Pickard has provided senior counsel on a wide range of communications issues to clients including AstraZeneca, British Airways, De Beers, EMC, GlaxoSmithKline, ING, Johnson & Johnson, Kia Motors, Merck, Microsoft, Nissan, Nomura and Pfizer.

imagePickard first came to Asia after a successful 15-year career in North American public relations.  He joined Edelman as Managing Director for Korea in 2002, where he led the Seoul office to record growth. The office was named “Consultancy of the Year” at the Asia-Pacific PR Awards in 2004.  In 2005, Pickard led Edelman’s successful entry into the Japanese market, establishing the firm’s Tokyo office, which grew to almost 30 people during the new operation’s first two years.

Prior to joining Edelman, Pickard was Executive Vice President of Environics Communications, a leading Canadian PR firm which he co-founded in 1994.  In 1996, he opened the firm’s New York-area office and in doing so, established the first Canadian-owned PR agency in the U.S. market.  Before then, Pickard was a Vice President at Hill & Knowlton Canada, where he led the firm’s technology practice.

imageJeffrey Eggen Jeff Eggen is the Experiential Marketing Manager for Ford, responsible for generating engaging, breakthrough programs which build awareness, consideration, and advocacy for Ford vehicles.  Examples include nationwide test drive tours / experiences, event activations and sponsorships, and experiential programs with key influencers.  Jeff has been in this position since 2008.  Successful consumer experiential initiatives that Jeff led include:  The Fiesta Movement, Ford Taurus NFL Gameday Houseparties, ControlTV, the Fiesta Garage at Bonnaroo, and Ford’s integration into American Idol, White Collar, and Vampire Diaries.

Jeff has held a wide variety of marketing and sales positions for Ford in the US and overseas.  He has been Marketing Manager for Ford Focus, Ford F-150, Ford Contour, Ford Escort, Mercury Sable, Mercury Mountaineer, and Mercury Mariner.  He has held product development positions in Ford, Lincoln, and Jaguar.  Finally, from 2004-2008, Jeff led the sales and marketing for Ford in 19 Asia Pacific markets including Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Before joining Ford, Jeff worked as a journalist, TV news anchor, and marketing communications manager in Kuwait and Venezuela.  He holds a BBA from Furman University (Greenville, SC) and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jeff lives outside Detroit with his wife and four children.
