FIR on Higher Education Episode 2 - Media relations tips
It is a competitive world out there in media relations land. As we all know, the media industry has been significantly disrupted.
So what are they keys to generating consistent positive media coverage for an institution? How can academics and thought leaders best prepare for interviews? What is the role of the media relations professional in the process? What about generating coverage internationally?
My guest Caleb Hulme-Moir, founder of Mana Communications and the former public relations director at Cass Business School in London, addresses these questions in episode 2 of FIR on Higher Education with Kevin Anselmo. Over a six-year period, Cass went from having no share of the British media voice to generating significant positive media coverage in print and broadcast, both in the UK and internationally. As part of our main interview feature, Caleb discusses how Cass was able to do this.
In our short opening news and tips section, I discuss how an online course led a professor to an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press and why a creative holiday greeting video from an institution generated over 54,000 YouTube views.
We are delighted to welcome Harry Hawk as a contributor to the show, reporting on technology within higher education. An adjunct professor at Cuny’s New York City School of Technology, Harry’s first report provides an informative overview of MOOCs.
Hope you enjoy the show!

FIR Interview: Laura Thomas, Dell’s new Chief Blogger

One of the pioneering organizations that ventured into the embryonic blogosphere in the early days of social media was Dell with its Direct2Dell corporate blog.
Launched in 2006, Direct2Dell gained early praise for its authenticity and transparency in how it enabled the company to engage with customers, fans and critics during a challenging time for Dell in customer relationship management in what became widely known as "Dell Hell."
In the ensuing years under the leadership of Chief Blogger, Lionel Menchaca - who has been a frequent guest on FIR podcasts - Direct2Dell evolved and developed as a credible place on the social web for many individual voices to tell Dell’s story.
Now Direct2Dell embarks on a new chapter with the transition into the role of Chief Blogger by long-time Dell communicator, Laura Thomas.
In this FIR Interview, co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz discuss the transition with Laura, who talks of her vision and plans for Direct2Dell as a "new era," expressed in detail in Dell’s Blog Manifesto, a guide for internal use that Dell has made public (embedded below).
Topics discussed in the interview include Laura’s desire to gain reader feedback (via an informal online survey) as a foundational step that will influence Direct2Dell’s development; and discussion on specific elements in the Blog Manifesto such as editorial policy for contributors and guidance on developing effective content.

As part of Dell’s Corporate Communications team, she previously focused on Global Commercial Channels and US Small and Medium Business public relations. Prior to that, she was responsible for global strategy in social media and community management, as well as marcom landing pages, as a member of Dell’s Global SMB Marketing, Brand and Creative team.
When she was part of Dell’s Global Online group, Laura provided internal consulting that integrated online and social media opportunities with a focus on Corporate Communications and Investor Relations. She managed the home page of Dell.com, one of the top 500 global web sites in Alexa traffic rank, and first brought web feeds and podcasts to the ecommerce site. In her spare time she led Dell into the metaverse with the creation of Dell Island in Second Life.
Laura has earned the designation of Accredited Business Communicator from the International Association of Business Communicators, and received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Louisiana State University. Here you can find the accurate description of what’s discussed in this episode. If you feel a bit lost, if you are new to this, or if the topics seem to be too complicated, don’t worry. You can take your time and listen to the show while you follow this post that I have already prepared for you.

“AMP Up Your Social Media” joins the FIR Podcast Network
The FIR Podcast Network is pleased to announce the addition of a podcast on social media marketing that will begin in late January 2014. Presenter Glenn Gaudet explains…
What is the role of social media in marketing? How do companies take advantage of this fast growing medium? What strategies do leading practitioners use to get results? What do industry insiders see coming up on the radar? How do companies engage stakeholders to be part of their social media marketing efforts?
I’m Glenn Gaudet. I am the president and founder of GaggleAMP. I have been engaged in and driving enterprise marketing efforts for over 20 years. I also wrote the book, Connection, Community & Conversation: Making Social Media Work for Business. I’ve held positions from product marketing manager to CMO to strategy consultant. This has given me the experience to go deep with social media professionals and ask the questions that marketers want answered.
AMP Up Your Social Media was launched in October of 2013 as a weekly podcast. I am thrilled to be able to now bring the show to the FIR Podcast Network. Since 2005, FIR has been the gold standard for bringing relevant and timely industry knowledge to the professionals in PR and marketing roles. Adding a show dedicated to social media marketing to the line up is a powerful complement.
As a long time fan of FIR, I am honored to be part of the mix. With the FIR Podcast Network as our distribution hub, AMP Up Your Social Media will continue to drive the thought leadership discussions around corporate social media use as part of the marketing mix.
If you have ideas for the show, guest submissions or feedback, I encourage you to reach out to me. My Twitter handle is @glenng. You will find AMP Up Your Social Media on the FIR website later this month.
Please join me in exploring existing and new ways to leverage social media marketing.
About Your Host
Glenn Gaudet is the President & Founder of GaggleAMP and author of the book, Connection, Community & Conversation: Making Social Media Work for Business. Gaudet brings over 20 years of comprehensive experience in both strategic and product marketing for technology and media companies ranging from startup to $1 billion in sales.
