Introducing FIR Cuts

Your “For Immediate Release” co-hosts go to great lengths to ensure the twice-weekly podcast comes in at around an hour; we know that most of our listeners can’t deal with shows running 15, 20, or even 30 minutes over that magical 60-minute mark. In order to accomlish this feat, we routinely excise items—mostly “One-Minute News” stories—and leave them on the virtual cutting room floor.

It occurred to us, though, that we’re leaving good stuff out of the show. So, in order to make sure it doesn’t go entirely to waste, we’ve decided to offer those deleted items as brief audio files called “FIR Cuts.” We’ll post them to the show blog (and cross-post them to our own blogs); you can even subscribe to to “FIR Cuts” feed so you never miss any of them. (“FIR Cuts” will not be included in the “Everything” feed, so if you want to hear them, you need to subscribe to them separately.) If you don’t see any “Cuts” for any given show, don’t worry; we actually do record episodes that don’t need any cutting.

We hope you enjoy hearing what was left out of our shows.

#257 is delayed; thank Virgin Media

Shel’s in Las Vegas on vacation and Neville’s doing the show solo today. Unfortunately, he cannot access anything via FTP along with a number of websites, including some used in show production. Neville has spent nearly an hour on the phone with his ISP—Virgin Media—but rather than look at their own systems, they have suggested the problem could be a virus. Nonsense, of course; Neville’s sister is having similar problems with the same service, and Shel has been through similar issues that were always resolved when his ISP restarted their own servers. The problem has gone on now for four hours. All of which means there will be a delay in getting the show up; it could be as late as tomorrow. We apologize for the delay. Send your complaints directly to Virgin Media, which may well lose a customer in the near future.

FIR’s new sponsor: Lawrence Ragan Communications

We are delighted to announce that Lawrence Ragan Communications, Inc., has entered into a long-term sponsorship arrangement with “For Immediate Release.” Under the terms of the sponsorship, FIR will include an ad on its website (which you can see under the “FIR Sponsors” label in the right-hand sidebar of the blog) and a 30-second clip on each episode of all the various FIR podcasts (including interviews, book reviews, and speakers/speeches, in addition to The Hobson & Holtz Report). We also will announce each episode as sponsored by Ragan Communications. For its part, Ragan will promote FIR on its various properties.

We see this as a three-way win. FIR attracts new listeners from the vast ranks of Ragan customers. (We also made a bit of money, we must admit.) Ragan can promote its activities to FIR listeners. Listeners win biggest of all, given the growth in the FIR community and the related content and connections that accompany such growth. Listeners also will learn of new professional development opportunities and content channels, many of which have no cost associated with them.

Ragan has been a leading provider of communications content since internal communications legend Larry Ragan founded the company some 35 years ago. The company produces newsletters, books and manuals, conferences, seminars, workshop and teleseminars, aimed at organizational communicators. (Another Ragan business unit focuses on management skills.)

FIR will continue its association with CustomScoop, bringing our total sponsorship level to two, which is the maximum we have set for ourselves. (This is the second time we have featured two sponsors: CustomScoop joined the lineup while we were still promoting GoToMeeting.)

Please read the social media version of the press release set for distribution on July 6. We welcome your feedback on this relationship.

Call for nominations for Podcast Awards 2007

The Podcast Awards 2007 kick off today.

The contest - the third annual such event - is designed to recognize the best podcasts, as voted by listeners, in 23 different categories.

Today’s first phase is a call for nominations where you can nominate your favourite podcast in each of those categories. Full details on the nomination and voting procedure are in the contest rules.

We - that’s Shel and Neville - would be highly chuffed if you were to nominate our podcast, For Immediate Release: The Hobson & Holtz Report, in the Business category.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to PodcastAwards.com, click on the Nominate Now link and go to the Business box
  2. In the Podcast Name field, type: For Immediate Release
  3. In the Podcast URL field, type: http://www.forimmediaterelease.biz/ (easier: right-click that link, choose ‘copy shortcut’ and then ctrl-V to paste it into the field)
  4. Scroll down the page and complete the ‘Your Details’ section
  5. Click ‘Submit’

You have until 23:59 Hawaii time on July 15 (that’s 09:59 GMT on July 16) to submit all your nominations. Make sure you read and understand the rules.

Following the close of nominations, a 7-10 day review period will take place where every nominated podcast is reviewed by the contest organizers. Once the short lists of nominations have been decided, actual voting will begin. The organizers plan to award all prizes at the third annual Podcast and New Media Expo in September.

Thank you if you do nominate and vote for FIR!

Ethics Skypecast set for January 13

The long-promised FIR Skypecast on ethics in PR is set for 10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on Saturday, January 13, 2007. We decided to schedule the session on a Saturday so more people could be involved. (Pesky interruptions like work shouldn’t be as much of an issue.) Join us as we record this discussion on the issues and potential solutions to what is arguably PR’s biggest problem.
