Best laid plans: We’ll reschedule call-in show

The technical problems confronting us as we tried to host our monthly call-in show today were so many and so severe that we finally gave up. Listeners let us know that the audio wasn’t listenable, even though we could hear each other. BlogTalk Radio continually refused to accept our host PIN, and when I dialed back in on a land line, I was able to connect as the host but nobody could hear me. We’ll work with BlogTalk Radio to resolve these issues and reschedule the show—the conversation was actually quite good. And we’ll be back on June 11 with a special panel discussion dealing with PR spam. In the meantime, we apologize to those who tuned in to hear today’s show, and especially those who planned to participate.

Cluetrain up for discussion on next live call-in episode, Saturday, May 24

John Cass started a meme back in March when he asked several bloggers to share their thoughts on five questions related to “The Cluetrain Manifesto.” Bloggers inlcuding Phil Gomes, Richard Binhammer, Jason Falls and Valeria Maltoni, among others, have shared their answers. We’ll run down the questions and some answers, offer our own thoughts, and hear what you think when we discuss John’s meme on our next live call-in episode, set for Saturday, May 24. The show will take place over the course of an hour beginning at 10 a.m. PDT, 1 p.m. EDT, and 6 p.m. BST. You can listen by visiting FIR’s BlogTalk Radio page or by calling 347-324-3723, which is also the number to call if you want to participate. (Incidentally, John wrotea follow-up post that covered some of the responses to his initial post.)

FIR opens UserVoice page

During its beta, UserVoice is free, so we at FIR have decided to take it out for a spin—or, more accurately, let you take it out for a spin. UserVoice is a new offering that does pretty much was the Salesforce.com Ideas does (Idea provides the backend to Dell’s IdeaStorm and MyStarbucksIdea, among others). For more on the introduction of UserVoice, read Jeremiah Owyang’s post. We do hope you’ll drop by and contribute ideas and cast your vote for (or against) those that have already been submitted.

You’ll notice a “feedback” tag on the right-hand side of the page. Clicking it gives you another way to access our UserVoice page. We’ve also added a widget to the sidebar. Let us know what you think…

Next call-in show set for April 19

Our correspondent Eric Schwartzman raised an interesting question in episode 333: How can companies get their messages out through social media channels when the participants in social media resist the intrusion of companies trying to deliver messages? We’ll discuss it on Saturday, April 19, at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern, and 6 p.m. BST (UK time). Listen to the show live at FIR’s BlogTalk Radio page, or listen in by calling the same number you’d use to call in a question: 347-324-3723. We’ll also have the chat room open so you can talk among yourselves while the show is being recorded. We hope you’ll make a point of spending an hour with us live!

Next live call-in show: Saturday, March 22

Is public relations two-way? In a blog post, Forrester Research’s Josh Bernoff suggested both advertising and PR are one-way, rendering them inappropriate for the management of social media in an organization. Yet public relations students routinely learn that their chosen career involves building and maintaining relationships between an organization and its publics. Blasting press releases: one-way. Negotiating with activist groups: two-way. In this live call-in episode of FIR, we’ll open the lines to listeners for their observations and opinions. It promises to be a lively discussion!

imageThe show is scheduled for Saturday, March 22. To participate, just call +1-347-324-3723 at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern, and 5 p.m. GMT. You can listen to the show live on the BlogTalk Radio website or on the phone at the number listed above.

We’re looking forward to chatting with you on Saturday!

FIR Poll: Best day for live call-in shows?

We had some feedback following Saturday’s live call-in show on BlogTalk Radio that Saturday wasn’t the best day for everyone. We chose Saturday so nobody would have to miss an hour of work (assuming that some bosses wouldn’t want you to). Let us know so we can make adjustments for future shows: What’s the best day for you?

NOTE: The application wasn’t working right so this post was closed until we could get it fixed. If you voted before Thursday morning, Feb. 14, please vote again.

Live call-in show set for Saturday, Feb. 9

Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz will host a special live call-in edition of “For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report” this Saturday, February 9, at 10 a.m. Pacific, (1 p.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. GMT).

The call-in episode will focus on the blurring of the lines between internal and external communications. If you work in external PR, how do employees of your (or your client’s) company affect your communication efforts? If you work in internal communications, how does your role change in order to prepare employees for their growing role as points of contact and brand experiences in the social media sites where they participate?

Listen to For Immediate Release on internet talk radio

To listen to the show, just visit the FIR BlogTalkRadio page. To join in the conversation, pick up a phone and call 347.324.3723. If you’re not near a computer, you can call the same number just to listen to the show. (If you’re listening over the phone and want to ask a question, press ‘1’ to alert us that you have a question or comment.)

If you’re not able to participate live, you’ll still be able to hear the show through all the usual channels: It will arrive in iTunes or whatever podcatcher you use if you’re already a subscriber and you’ll be able to listen directly or download the show from the FIR blog if you’re not. The show can also be heard on the FIR BlogTalkRadio page.

We’re both looking forward to talking with you live on Saturday!
