Chats with Chip #4: William Beutler of Beutler Ink
William Beutler is the founder of Beutler Ink, a social media content agency that specializes in visual storytelling and content marketing. He’s done work for companies like Google, Verizon, and the NBA, to name just a few. For much of the past decade, he has been active as an editor of Wikipedia. And he recently co-authored an e-book helping to guide people through the often murky and seemingly treacherous waters of that site.
In this podcast, he discusses how he came to be involved with Wikipedia and ultimately launch an agency that, in part, focuses on helping clients engage with the site (and its editors) more effectively.

We all get a lot of email every day. Doesn’t matter if you are a student or a professional, our inbox fills up very fast. This week, Kristine D’Arbelles and Julia Kent discuss a few simple rules for emailing that will help you get through your inbox faster and more efficiently. We get to hear about some of Julia’s pet peeves for fun too!
We get our inspiration this week from an article on Time.com by Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg called 9 Rules For Emailing From Google Exec.
The nine rules for emailing are:
- Respond quickly.
- When writing an email, every word matters, and useless prose doesn’t.
- Clean out your inbox constantly.
- Handle email in LIFO order (Last In First Out).
- Remember, you’re a router.
- When you use the bcc (blind copy) feature, ask yourself why.
- Don’t yell.
- Make it easy to follow up on requests.
- Help your future self search for stuff.
Listen to this episode to learn more about the nine rules and find out which ones Kristine and Julia live by.
We want to hear from you! What are your email rules? Are there any of Eric Schmidt’s rules you agree/disagree with?

FIR Presents AMP Up Your Social Media #37: Social Media Policy Creation with Mic Adam
Mic Adam is an online and offline networker specializing in social media marketing with 30 years of experience. His goal is to bridge the gap between social media and business by utilizing B2B and B2C sales and marketing, using his years of general management experience as a springboard. He thrives on the passion that drives sales and profits by demonstrating and diversifying the unique selling points of high quality products and services through traditional channels as well as new media. Mic recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss social media policy creation and how you can get your employees on board with social media!
“Social media policy is a driver to create ambassadorship within your own company.”
Mic discusses some tips for getting employees on board with social media through a policy:
- Use your employees as ambassadors. Your employees are your greatest asset, as they (hopefully) support your business and have the ability to reach customers that you may otherwise not have had access to! Lasso those employees and utilize their networks to support and socially advertise for your business. Users tend to take individuals’ posts as more authentic than those from a business, so your employees can be your ambassadors and will typically gain more traction in the social media world.
- Don’t be restrictive. Rather than limiting access and implementing ‘negative’ rules, encourage employee interactivity! Enforce simple and clear-cut policy rules that are fair and follow a standard code-of-conduct. Fortunately, most companies already have guidelines established, so simply enlarge that policy to encourage employees to be responsible when using social media. Look at the verbiage of your policy - how many cannot’s do you have? Change the perception of your policy by encouraging people to speak out and speak up.
- Have a good roll-out plan. Many companies don’t have a social media policy in place, so implementing a policy can be a shock if done at once. Rather than being reactive during a damaging situation, roll-out a well-organized policy over time - preferably not during a time when your marketers are doing any damage control! Design the roll-out with presentations to show and guide employees through the changes while learning about the policy and social media in general.
- Protect your reputation. In many cases, people forget that the individuals that comprise the company, those personal conversations can have an impact on the company as a whole. Design your policy to encourage interactivity from employees on social media while protecting your reputation. Write simple and solid restrictions on what can and cannot be discussed by employees on social media websites.
Mic would love to hear from you! Chat with him on Twitter or follow his blog.
About Mic Adam
A father and entrepreneur, Mic Adam hails from Brugge, Belgium. He enjoys basketball, bicycling, and the outdoors and is fluent in both English and Dutch as native languages! He also spends his time volunteering with the Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters and publishes in De Tijd in Belgium.

FIR Presents Inside PR #389: A merger, a Facebook departure, and a cool new tool
On today’s Inside PR, we have three topics: The Vocus/Cision merger, Copyblogger shutting down its Facebook page, and a cool new tool called Slidebatch.
Vocus and Cision
As it happens, I was in Washington, D.C. for the PRSA International Conference. I attended the happy hour with Vocus and Cision to learn of their new name and what their plans are, now that the merger is complete.
They will keep the name Cision and will be headquartered in Chicago (which makes me happy), but it sounds like Cision clients will now have access to Vocus tools (PR Web and HARO) and Vocus clients will now have access to Cision tools.
But it is an interesting look at what is happening in the PR industry. Joe asks if we’re shrinking and what that could mean for our livelihoods.
Copyblogger and Facebook
Then we tackled the big announcement from Copyblogger that they shut down their Facebook page, even with 36,000 fans.
We talk about whether this is a publicity stunt (that clearly is working because everyone in the industry is talking about it) or just a really smart decision.
Though the algorithm at Facebook has changed and engagement, reach, and comments are down across the board, it still drives a significant amount of referral traffic for each of us.
It would be interesting to see if Copyblogger lost a significant amount of referral traffic when they did this.
Slidebatch
SlideBatch is going to change the look and feel of your newsrooms forever.
No more manual updates to the newsroom every time a story runs.
Instead of every time a story runs about your organization or about one of your client, you have to create an image, write a couple of sentences to entice people to click, and then link to the original story, you can create a Batch.
We talk about other uses for it and why we think it’s a nice tool for every PR pro’s toolbox.
We’d love to know what you think about these topics!

AMP Up Your Social Media #36: Integrating Digital Media via Twitter
Mark H. Cohen is a traditional marketer, boasting a history in marketing in the early 90s. Since then, he’s started his own agency called Colloquy Digital, LLC and focuses on digital strategy, planning, production and integrated marketing services. Mark recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss digital strategy and execution and its integration with your business!
“Figure out how to create your own content on a regular basis. [...] Social media is all about the power of content and brand storytelling.”
Mark discusses tips for integrating digital media via Twitter into your social marketing:
1. Regulate speech on social media. Many times companies work within a regulated environment and are unsure of how to bridge that gap into social media. Apply the same principals you’d use for non-social internet pages and emails to social media as well. The lines are still blurred, so it’s ultimately left up to compliance officers and legal teams depending on the industry. While interpretation is left to them, finding a balance between playing it safe and stepping outside the box.
2. Don’t forget disclosures. Use the right disclosures to share content that you’d otherwise be too cautious to share to get to the heart of the content. Get involved with content curation; As long as you’re not endorsing the content and use a disclosure. You can share great content about what you support without breaching regulation.
3. Utilize your Twitter background. 140 characters is many times not enough space to get your point across, especially when you are adding a disclosure to your content. Instead, put your disclosure in the background of your Twitter profile as a cure-all for any content you post. This way you aren’t using precious space in your feed while still following regulation!
4. Support employee engagement. Many times, employees are looking to post individual content for the organization, and the result is a genuine post! Foster employee development while training them on disclosures. Content curation can be difficult, and individual employee content can be a wealth of internal brand marketing voice!
Mark would love to hear from you! Chat with him on Twitter.
About Mark Cohen
A native New Yorker and father of three, Mark is both a family man and business professional. He focuses his spare time on giving back to the community and is a board member of several organizations. A self-professed bourbon connoisseur and lover of ethnic food, music, and the outdoors, Mark is both down-to-earth and other-wordly!

AMP Up Your Social Media #34: CPA Firms and Social Media Marketing with Becky Livingston
Becky Livingston, owner of Penheel Marketing, has been in marketing and technology for over twenty-five years. She has extensive experience working with clients in small business, non-profit, and financial services in social media and digital marketing. As a former programmer, she was impressed with LinkedIn and its networking capabilities, launching her into her current marketing career. Becky recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss social media marketing for CPA firms.
“By having a marketing plan or at least a social media schedule…[you avoid forgetting what] caused a spike or valley in your analytics, marketing, or lead generation.”
Becky offers these tips for CPA firms on social media marketing:
- Carefully advertise. Many smaller CPA firms cannot advertise about their services, per se. Because LinkedIn is a B2B network, you have an opportunity to use a free platform based on your individual needs such as lead generation, web traffic, and niche markets. Understand your profession, and know your limits. Any regulated industry requires careful sharing of client information and the like. Create policies, become educated, and be comfortable with what you’re doing while following these regulations.
- Align goals. The firm’s goals and social media goals can sometimes differ, so align your goals for a successful social media campaign. Generating leads, increasing traffic, and increasing exposure all require different social media marketing strategies and can change the way you utilize social media networks. Have a firm understanding of your business’ goals for social media for the best social media campaign.
- Know your buyer persona. The buyer’s persona is your target audience, and the first step to understanding this is research. A well-made strategy aimed at the wrong market will have disappointing results. Once you’ve researched your market, review your history to see what has been successful in the past. Utilize resources appropriately to reach your goals through social media and digital marketing.
- Create proper content. Regardless of the medium, your content is the core of your social media campaign. You’ll want content that can be used in many different ways. For instance, a single article can be utilized for slide decks, presentations, and additional articles! Inbound marketing and content development is an essential piece of the media you share, so develop your own content.
Becky would love to hear from you! Chat with her on Twitter or find her company at http://penheel.com/.

FIR Presents Inside PR #388: The evolution of media and media relations
While I was in the air for the recording of this podcast, the conversation Martin Waxman and I had about the layoffs at The New York Times launched the conversation he and Joe Thornley had today.
While it’s a focus on Canadian media, it shows a very interesting trend: There is an ongoing march of media consolidation, which could very well continue to affect the way communications professionals—particularly those who focus on media relations—do their jobs.
In the news, Post Media acquired Sun Media and they are suddenly the largest print publication in Canada. Martin suspects they have 100% media market in cities such as Ottawa and Vancouver. While they’ve said there won’t be layoffs, we surmise they don’t really need multiple news bureaus in every city so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
There continues to be a consolidation of newsrooms and the disappearance of beats—PR pros today outweigh journalists four to one—which means we have to continue to evolve.
And speaking of evolution, Martin and Joe spoke to an interesting tactic Jesse Brown is taking with Canadaland.
For those of you who don’t know (I didn’t), Jesse Brown was an early podcaster with Search Engine. A couple of years ago, he turned that into Canadaland, which is a media watchdog of sorts.
He has broken big stories, such as the policy the CBC had that allowed Peter Mansbridge to be on the news every night and also get paid to speak at events for organizations that were in the news. Because of the Canadaland investigation, the CBC changed their policy.
But Jesse is facing something many content producers face and that is he’s not being paid to spend the necessary time to break news like this. So he has asked his supporters to become patrons of sorts…and it’s working!
Martin and Joe wonder if this could be a new trend, particularly for brand-new content producers.

FIR On Technology with Dan York, Episode 2 - Known And The IndieWeb
What is “Known” and how does it relate to the IndieWeb? What is the difference between the Known software and the Withknown hosted platform? How do these compare to the new Ello social network? And what value are any of these to communicators?
In this second episode of “FIR On Technology”, recorded on October 1, 2014, Dan York and Shel Holtz discuss all these questions, plus the value of owning your own content, the meaning of “POSSE” and perspectives on the various tools being discussed.
UPDATE: In the show, I mentioned that the self-hosted version of Known did NOT come with social media integration. This turns out to NOT be true. Ben Werdmuller from Known clarified that my experience had to do with the fact that I had installed Known directly from the Github repository. If I had used the “Download Known” button on the Known Developers page, I would have downloaded a complete version, including social media integration tools. With using the bare bones version directly from the Github repository, I still could have installed the social media integration tools, but I just needed to download and install them as separate plugins. I appreciate Ben’s reply and clarification. —Dan
Along the way, Dan and Shel discussed a wide range of links, including news stories and articles about the IndieWeb:

- GigaOm: Don’t like Facebook owning and controlling your content? Use tools that support the open Web

AMP Up Your Social Media #35: Using LinkedIn for Professional Branding with Chuck Hester
Chuck Hester is a national speaker on LinkedIn and author of Linking in to Pay It Forward: Changing the Value Proposition in Social Media. His specialties include social media marketing, public relations strategies, and marketing communications to name a few. He’s an author and podcast host with an emphasis on LinkedIn. Chuck recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss how LinkedIn can be used for professional branding.
“Be genuine. Be transparent. Treat your connections like they’re standing right in front of you.”
Chuck discusses ways that you can use LinkedIn to your advantage as a professional branding tool:
- Use LinkedIn for more than just recruiting. Recently, LinkedIn became a content platform, opening up blogging, content sharing, and information sharing to the average business user. It’s more about business-to-business relationships rather than simply recruiting. You can utilize LinkedIn as an open discussion group for attracting clients and building your brand.
- Build employee groups. Use groups as a marketplace to chat, reaching out to other employees and colleagues that you wouldn’t normally get the chance to talk to. LinkedIn company pages allow people to build information on a company page as an employee, giving your employees another resource for connecting to others. Exchange information while identifying with your company to build your market!
- Make your profile engaging. Many times, people fall into the trap of simply posting information without truly making a connection. Take your profile to the next level by engaging users and developing relationships through your LinkedIn profile. Add to the conversations by connecting with people you typically wouldn’t be able to otherwise! Join groups and become part of the community.
- Make your LinkedIn profile not just a resume - make it a portfolio! Look at your profile and see what it has to offer to potential partners. Does the verbiage reflect what target audiences will connect with? LinkedIn is more robust and delves deeper than a simple resume. Consider it from a customer or business aspect and ensure that your profile connects with those users.
Chuck would love to hear from you! Chat with him on Twitter or email him at chuck@chuckhester.com.
About Chuck Hester
With a BA in journalism and communications from the University of Southern California, Chuck has spent his professional career delving into the intricacies of social media marketing. He supports Pets for Patriots, Inc. as well as the United Nations Refugee Fund. While he may have a lengthy professional repertoire, he values communication and the human connection - so be sure to give him a call today!
