Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 26: June 11, 2014
In this episode, Mitchell and Michael mark their sixth month on air by featuring one of the show’s most popular guests so far, #ThoughtLeader Jeffrey Hayzlett. Joking about being upset that he is the 26th, rather than the first, #ThoughtLeader to be interviewed on the show, Jeffrey takes comfort knowing that he is in fact Thought Leader Life’s half-year inaugural guest, as pointed out by Mitchell.
Many years ago, Jeffrey introduced the word “activate” to Mitchell who later on made it a ‘buzz’ word in #ThoughtLeadership. In the interview, Jeffrey discusses what activate means and why he thinks an expert or an author should be activated to really be a #ThoughtLeader. It’s not enough that you publish a book or get your thoughts out there; people should buy it, talk about it and move or take action because of it. Quoting his own public relations firm’s adage: “If you’re going to roll with the big dogs, you got to learn to pee in the tall grass” (http://www.tallgrasspr.com), Jeffrey says the key is to activate a thought-provoking conversation among individuals and communities with your content.
Jeffrey also shares his secret in building a good fan base and developing advocates: he treats people the way he likes to be treated. This means he follows back people who follow him and personally responds to people who take the time to send him a message, negative or positive. A word of caution, though – when you ask something from Jeffrey, make it direct to the point. Jeffrey is a person who doesn’t like to have coffee (he really doesn’t drink coffee!) and have a little chit chat. Tell him what you want from him straight out and he would respect that directness and he would gladly extend help because, as he puts it, he has this “servant mentality” in which he would always want to help others any way he can.
Jeffrey also talks about the Thought Leadership Funnel (http://www.thinkaha.com/thoughtleadershipfunnel) and discussed the next step to building advocates. For Jeffrey, it’s all about adding ‘zeroes’ and understanding that ‘there’s always someone out there who’s bigger than you are’. Finally, Jeffrey shares some interesting and surprising twists behind Bloomberg’s #1 primetime reality show C-Suite with Jeffrey Hayzlett (http://www.bloomberg.com/videos/csuite). Connecting the premise of this show to #ThoughtLeadership, Jeffrey notes that what the show has proven is that transparency really works. He also talks about his newest project the C-Suite Network which he describes as “LinkedIn on steroids” where C-Suite executives can share and interact online, participate in a conference or take up a course in the c-suite academy. Jeffrey and Mitchell share insights about the recently held C-Suite Network Conference and the great speakers that were featured there. Who was Jeffrey’s favorite speaker at the conference? Mitchell was surprised about Jeffrey’s answer.

FIR Presents Inside PR 3.74: Scott Monty will not be forgotten
This week on Inside PR, Gini Dietrich and Martin Waxman talk about the implications of the European Court’s right to be forgotten regime and Scott Monty’s classy announcement that he has left his role as social media head for Ford.
In the past two weeks, requests by European citizens have flooded Google with requests to delete information about them from the search engine’s results. Gini points out that the European Court’s decision requiring that Google takedown information upon request does not sit well with Americans, who see this as undermining the right to free expression. Nevertheless, she advises clients with operations in Europe and elsewhere to take note of this move. It points to the need for companies operating globally to be sensitive to different values in different places. Martin is uncomfortable with the potential that this ruling holds to rewrite and obfuscate history. Where do we draw the line between someone wanting to remove a hurtful or hateful opinion and someone who wants to remove or obscure facts? The true impact of this ruling will only be known over time.
And kudos to Scott Monty for the classy way that Scott announced on his blog that he had left his role as social media head at Ford. Scott praised his team, praised the company and praised the work that they did together. Others who are announcing a move would be well recommended to look at Scott’s departure announcement as a template for the right way to handle yourself when announcing a career change.
Finally, interesting factoid or fiction? Martin says that Canada is the only country in the world that still celebrates Queen Victoria’s birthday as a national holiday. With fireworks no less. Is that true? Are we truly unique in the world?

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 25: June 4, 2014
Social seller Lori Ruff (@LoriRuff) is our guest. Her fans call her “The LinkedIn Diva” even though she doesn’t work for LinkedIn®. Recognized by Forbes twice as a Top 50 Social Media Power Influencer (#9 woman) and Moody’s Top 50 Favorite People of 2012, she is one of the most-connected women on LinkedIn.
In this episode, Mitchell and Michael hang out with #ThoughtLeader Lori Ruff (@loriruff). Recognized by her super fans as the #LinkedIn Diva, Lori belongs to the elite Forbes list of top social media influencers in the world. In the interview, she reveals the secret to making it on this list and how she became a successful #ThoughtLeader in her own right. Lori believes a #ThoughtLeader provides value to the world and shares their thoughts in a way that is positive and open to discussion. That is why #ThoughtLeadership is, first and foremost, a positive connotation and something that has no space for dictatorship. For Lori, the ultimate #ThoughtLeader was Maya Angelou (who passed away on May 28, 2014) because her works made such an impact on Lori that they changed her entire perspective in life. It was Maya Angelou (http://www.mayaangelou.com) who said: “People don’t always remember what you say or even what you do, but they always remember how you made them feel.” And this is so true for Lori who, after experiencing tough challenges in life, realized that you can actually work through your emotions and show who you truly are.
As one of Mitchell’s favorite persons in the world, he describes Lori as having a warm heart that allows her to be authentic in building her connections and relationships. For Mitchell, Lori is a #ThoughtLeader who builds real relationships; as such, if you get a Lori Ruff-referral, you will immediately be trusted and respected. She explains that people come to trust her because she shares her true self and lets other people see her as a human being. People can relate to that because they are human, too.
Lori, who has been labeled by one of her 100,000 followers on Twitter and LinkedIn as more popular than @ladygaga, tells about what a typical day is like for her. She also shares her insights about Cause Marketing and why she has chosen to become a celebrity ambassador for the CureArthritis.org (http://www.curearthritis.org/). She is a super fan of http://AhaAmplifier.com, and is excited about the THiNKaha App Book that aims to spread awareness about arthritis using Tweetable quotes.

Here are a couple of aha moments from the episode. See more in the “Aha Moments from Thought Leader Life” books available in the THiNKaha App: http://AhaAmplifier.com/.
* Be authentic. That’s the core, and if you can’t get that right, you won’t get that overwhelming success you’re looking for. @loriruff
* The more I protected the people who follow me, the more trust I could build with them. @loriruff
* A sign of success is when you’ve built your network over time, worked for their best interest, and become a good connector. @happyabout
* People don’t care what you know until they know that you care. @loriruff

FIR B2B #10: B2B Buyers Are People – Really - Plus MorningStar’s Leslie Marshall
Paul Gillin and Allan Schoenberg host the FIR B2B podcast. In this episode:
News & Trends
It’s people week at FIR B2B. We came across several articles this week that stress the importance of communicating with your audience as people rather than as, in the words of one content marketer, “one-dimensional robots trying to solve a business goal.”
We start with a sponsored post on VentureBeat that makes the case why B2B marketers should stop trying to chase the tactics that work in the B2C world. Shari Johnston of Demandbase says you should talk to personas, not demographics. Our hosts agree. It’s very different approaching a customer who’s making a multi-million-dollar buying decision compared to one who’s buying a candy bar.
“10 B2B Masters Reveal Their Storytelling Secrets” in a new SlideShare presentation, and there are some gems in there. Tell your story and address the problems your customers are trying to solve. Be yourself.
Marisa Kopec, VP and group director of go-to-market, at SiriusDecisions told her audience at the SiriusDecisions 2014 Summit last month that 60% of B2B content ends up in a “content wasteland.” Our hosts aren’t so sure they agree with that number, but they do agree that most companies do a lousy job of auditing the content their people produce. Those slide presentations by the engineers are content marketing gold.
Special Guest: Leslie Marshall, Morningstar
Our special guest is Leslie Marshall, Director of Events, Magazine and Social Media at Morningstar. Leslie continues on the storytelling theme from earlier in the show by describing some innovative programs MorningStar has run to draw out employee stories and creativity.
One was a Vine video program around the 25th anniversary of the company’s investing conference that had employees and customers creating six-second videos to explain what investing is. “We get caught up in so many ideas and have so much to say that sometimes boiling it down six seconds or 140 characters can make it all that much more valuable,” she says.
This year’s Vine campaign focuses on what it’s like to work at MorningStar. Leslie also addresses the importance of partnerships between the communications and legal teams to minimize compliance issues. And she explains MorningStar’s rationale for continuing to publish a print magazine. “People still want to engage with reading interesting content, and we think we have a lot of that offer.”

AMP UP Your Social Media #27: Turning Social Media Relationships Into Business with Tony Zayas
Tony Zayas is the Marketing Manager for Proforma, a leading supplier of print and promotional products and graphic communication solutions in North America with over 750 locations and franchises nationwide. Tony recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss how social media can help small business owners and entrepreneurs develop relationships that turn into business.
“Utilize social to grow web presence and to sell; not to sell directly on social, but to develop those relationships that lead to business”
Tony reveals his strategies on how to develop relationships on social media and how those relationships can lead to business:
- Keep your content relevant to the end user. Think about your audience, and put together content that talks to them - not necessarily just about what you sell and your services. You should consider your content as a service; a very important service.
- Utilize the resources of social media to find and interact with potential business leads. You need to find people to connect with, interact with them, and then, once you have a relationship, casually begin the business conversation.
- LinkedIn has a lot of potential and is often underutilized. Make sure that after you connect, you follow up. Not a sales pitch, but a thank you or personalized message. Keep it friendly, encourage them to look at your profile, offer to introduce them to your connections; this interaction is what leads to a business relationship.
Tony would love to hear from you! To connect with him find him on LinkedIn or email him at tony@socialbusinessblueprint.com.

FIR Presents Inside PR 3.73: Counselors Academy – Agency Lessons Learned
Martin here. This week it’s Gini and me and we’re talking about what I learned at Counselors Academy’s annual conference for PR agency owners and leaders.
We’ve mentioned #CAPRSA before – and as many of you know, it’s the place where Gini, Joe and I met in person, got to know each other and really was the beginning of the current IPR hosting team.
Over the years we’ve interviewed PR and social media thought-leaders and recorded live shows at Counselors. This time, I was there without my two compadres (Noooooo…) so it was up to me to give an update on the event.
Highlights included: keynotes by Shonali Burke and Steve McKee, a talk on creative storytelling by Rob Biesenbach and agency leaders like Brett Werner, Janet Tyler and Lynn Casey on strategies and lessons they’ve learned running successful firms.
And of course, it’s a wonderful opportunity to talk ideas with smart, articulate and friendly people and get re-ignited about agency life.
Congratulations to Tom Garrity, the conference chair, Chuck Norman, the co-chair and the entire conference committee. If you’re an agency owner/leader and you’re looking for a must-attend business event, we think Counselors is something you should definitely consider.

Content Marketing with Brittany Berger
Brittany Berger is the Digital Content Supervisor in the PR and Marketing department for eZanga.com., a search engine specializing in online advertising and services. They offer local, regional, and national advertising campaigns focused on generating a high ROI. Brittany recently joined AMP Up Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss tips for content marketing.
“Take different approaches to sharing content. You’ll get more success if you take a unique approach such as a quote from the content with a link rather than just the content’s title and a link.
Brittany offers tips to help you decide on content topics, structures and styles:
- Choose Topics. When you are deciding on topics for your content consider who your audience is, what your brand stands for, what platform you are posting on, your own expertise (or the expertise of the person you are interviewing), and what your competitors are talking about.
- Vary the posts. It is important to vary the style of your posts: Infographics, bullet style posts, articles, etc. Brittany explained that she determines what day she does each style based on how busy her schedule is. She explained that she can write a bullet style post in much less time than she can write a paragraph style post, yet still contain the same basic information. On her busy days she writes quick posts, and on days she has less on her plate she writes more detailed articles.
- Get sales involved in creating content and about your industry niche. Getting sales to produce content is likely near impossible, but you can still use them as an information hub! Interview your sales team to get the content: What questions are they hearing from customers? What are hot topics among consumers? What new products/services are you offering?
Brittany would love to hear from you! Chat with her on Twitter at @BBerg1010 or find her on LinkedIn.
About Brittany Berger
Brittany is a 2012 graduate of the University of Delaware with a B.A. in Mass Communication and minors in Interactive Media and English. Through my classes, I’ve learned how digital and social media have changed our world and methods of communication. Brittany is the Digital Content Supervisor for eZanga.com. She believes that social media can be the answer to most questions in life (especially “How do you spend your free time?”).
She has seen and experienced first hand how Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, and more can help both individuals and brands with any problems they may have. She’s dedicated her career to making sure social media can help as many people and businesses as possible. She’s also discovered a love for email marketing and the inbound marketing methodology.

FIR on Higher Education #11: Professor Vincent Mangematin on MOOCs’ Disruption

MOOCs are hotly debated and many questions linger. There is no doubt that they are causing disruption. Vincent Mangematin, a professor at France’s Grenoble Ecole de Management, wrote in the Financial Times that MOOCs will leave behind a trail of failed global business schools.
Given this disruption, how should academics innovate in the way they go about presenting knowledge and fostering learning? How can marketers use MOOCs as an opportunity to position programs and their school’s brand? These are among the questions that I ask Vincent on FIR on Higher Education episode 11.
If you are a professor, have you changed the way you teach given new technologies? And if you are a marketer or communicator, have you been involved in a MOOC project to help in a branding effort? We would love to hear your experiences. Feel free to share in the FIR Google+ community.
In our reports segment, I discuss how Wabash College used social media to raise over $465,000 in one day, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk discusses hastag use in the classroom.
About Vincent Mangematin
Vincent Mangematin is associate dean of research and senior professor of management and technology at the Grenoble Ecole de Management in France. Vincent’s research interest focuses on innovation processes in technological competition situations. He has successively worked on technology transfer, especially individuals’ movement between organizations and technology platforms, on creation and growth of high-tech startups, on clusters’ influence and on the emergence of new business models.

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 24: May 29, 2014
In this episode, Mitchell and Michael share insights with #thoughtleader Kurt Shaver (@kurtshaver or @salesfoundry). Kurt spent 20 years in the corporate sales world before finally establishing his own company, The Sale Foundry (http://www.thesalesfoundry.com), a professional consulting firm that helps social corporate clients learn social selling skills to grow their business. Since then, he has been working with organizations to help them sell the way that today’s buyer’s buy – through social.
Kurt believes that to be a #thoughtleader, you need to be in the game. A #thoughtleader cannot be standing apart, high up on the ivory tower and approaching everything academically. The real #thoughtleader must be in the trenches to actually experience whatever topic it is that they are talking about. Commenting on the Thought Leadeship Funnel (http://www.thinkaha.com/thought-leadership-funnel), from a perspective of someone who has been in sales for years, Kurt considers the engagement part is the most critical because this is the part where a sales person actually moves from brand awareness to an actual dialogue with the prospect which indicates the beginning of the sales cycle. And because the engagement piece in the funnel can also be one-to-many-to-one, Kurt says it is important to always be conscious about response time and to make the response in a timely manner. The response time of course depends on the kind of research you’d want to do before actually responding so that the engagement will progress towards winning a future advocate and onward to having an advocate. Michael notes that, with social media, having a one-to-one conversation has become entirely different because now everybody gets to see what your response is to a person’s question.
In the interview, Kurt shares some of his techniques in teaching companies maximize the full potential of social media platforms like Linkedin and build the social selling skills, starting from the manager up to the sales agents. He also expounds on the four fundamental areas in social selling that companies nowadays need to learn and implement to achieve corporate success.
Kurt is also excited about his THiNKaha App Book which is due for release within the week and will be seen on http://AhaAmplifier.com, and calls this a milestone and a big opportunity for him and his company.

Here are a couple of aha moments from the episode. See more in the “Aha Moments from Thought Leader Life” books available in the THiNKaha App:http://AhaAmplifier.com/.
• It’s only in the social era that an individual can actually be a worldwide publisher. @kurtshaver
• The difference with one-to-many-to-one conversation on social media is that everybody gets to read or see that conversation. @michaelprocopio
• Always be conscious about delivering good service because now, with social media, everybody’s watching. @kurtshaver
