So, until Monday September 28…
Just wanted to weigh in on the proposal pitch for new business. In the past I have succumbed to the very wrong notion that if I send a strategy complete with concept that it gives me a better chance of being awarded the work. However, it almost always back fires in the sense that none of the brands respect the author of the project - they simply pass it on to the larger agencies with which they have a contract yet little or no imagination. Most use their senior partners to close the deal only to then have junior staff manage the existing relationship and projects.
Deja-vu. And these are international brands. The thing is that it takes time, reputation and professionalism to get asked to develop projects. I have just been asked by a leading international drinks company to develop a social media project. I’m charging them for it and then they can decide whether to have me or another agency develop it.
The recession hasn’t helped matters as overstaffed and under performing agencies try and cope with the slump in business - but how much of that is a direct result of the crisis? I would bet that in most cases, the drop in sales has more to do with the growing divide between what the customers want/need and what the agency offers.
It’s time to have courage (bollocks in the UK) and charge for projects because if you don’t, you’ll need a lot more (bigger) courage for what awaits you.
Keep up the great show. Have to admit I am now addicted to two things - cigarettes and FIR - one I hope to one day kick which will happily leave me listening to you guys.
