  1. Really interesting discussion regarding conferences and what’s worth paying for. It’s really not that much different from topics like the conversation about pay walls on media websites, how “piracy” impacts Hollywood and other similar points.

    It’s all about real - and perceived - costs and what certain items are worth to people. If I watch a movie on Hulu it’s because I’ve decided sitting through the commercials there are worth the instant access as opposed to renting, for a cost, the physical DVD. If I perceive the content of the Wall Street Journal to be valuable I’ll pay for it. If not I’ll wait to read a recap on someone’s blog.

    Likewise, if I think a conference has value (content, networking opps, etc) I’ll pay for it. Even if the conference is free there are still the time and travel costs which need to be considered.
