  1. Regarding formal qualifications for practicing PR: I have none, but lately people keep asking me to do things which have some kind of PR function, like writing internal newsletters so that the rest of the company will appreciate the IT department more, and locating bloggers, podcasters, and magazines to pitch to give a client appropriate exposure. Everything I know about PR, I’ve learned by listening to podcasts. Which means I know more about the new media aspect of PR than some PR professionals I know. It’s a strange business.

Shel:  I work at Sun Microsystems and our Global Employee Comms team has been evaluating the impacts of Social Media/Social Networking for some time now.  We are evaluating how we are organized - to see how we can better serve the needs of discrete communities of employees - which cross organizational and geographic boundaries - but perhaps have more in common and more similar information needs/wants than we thought before.  Its an interesting time to say the least!
