  1. Shel, that was wonderful.  Bravo!  So true and so well ranted.  Thank you.

  2. Re: Supralux “Tokyo”, you already played that back on show 142…

  3. I thought so, Martyn, but we ran out of time to dig up a new song! It’s a good one, though…

  4. I agree with Robert, and compared to mac fanatic rants it is quite civil and calm.

  5. Shel, quite a piece though I must say I am surprised that you took it that much in the open, inviting comments (although you said you don’t want any). And I am also surprised that the FIR listerners so far have respected your request, as will I of course.

  6. Sebastian, I never said I didn’t want comments—just no emails telling me I’m wrong! Discussion is fine, “You shouldn’t really feel that way” is pointless!

  7. Well then, first off, you had your experiences, made your decision and that is not only fine but I respect it. It’s not an easy decision to say, the 1500$ machine I bought is not for me.
Many of the points you mentioned I understand though I think, e.g. regards software there are other products out there which also do the job. Sure, you’d like to use the same ones as you were but maybe other apps also do the work. But you are right about other things, the backspace thing confused me in the beginning, though the “fn” key is there for a reason…
But the point I found most moot is the switching between apps and windows in the app. Firstly, when you use Alt+Tab you can use the arrow keys in a mac to move left or right. Then you complained about having to press F10… So, you are using Expose which is great: I have it set up with touchpad actions. When I move my cursor quickly into the top left corner, all open windows in the current app are shown (like the F10 mode), when I move quickly into the right top corner, ALL open windows are shown, and when I move into the left bottom corner, I have a clear view of the desktop. Even if you getting rid of the machine, you should just try it out for a spin, really helpful. You might say, keyboard short-cuts are better, but really, you don’t need to carefully point into a corner, just a swoosh.
Btw, I am working on a windows pc at one of my clients, and all browsers keep crashing all the time…
    Greetings from Heidelberg,Sab

  8. Wow Shel, I thought your Mac rant… er.. commentary was excellent!  grounded and well argued.  In all fairness, the complexity of both PCs and Macs has increased tremendously in the last 4-5 years.  So has their probability of failure, which is why I find the overall attitude related to Apple’s “superiority” a bit disingenuous.  But I agree with the other side, Macs still look cooler on your desk…
