Introducing FIR Cuts

An opportunity to hear what you won’t hear in the Hobson and Holtz Report.

Your “For Immediate Release” co-hosts go to great lengths to ensure the twice-weekly podcast comes in at around an hour; we know that most of our listeners can’t deal with shows running 15, 20, or even 30 minutes over that magical 60-minute mark. In order to accomlish this feat, we routinely excise items—mostly “One-Minute News” stories—and leave them on the virtual cutting room floor.

It occurred to us, though, that we’re leaving good stuff out of the show. So, in order to make sure it doesn’t go entirely to waste, we’ve decided to offer those deleted items as brief audio files called “FIR Cuts.” We’ll post them to the show blog (and cross-post them to our own blogs); you can even subscribe to to “FIR Cuts” feed so you never miss any of them. (“FIR Cuts” will not be included in the “Everything” feed, so if you want to hear them, you need to subscribe to them separately.) If you don’t see any “Cuts” for any given show, don’t worry; we actually do record episodes that don’t need any cutting.

We hope you enjoy hearing what was left out of our shows.

  1. Fantastic idea! I’ve already subscribed. I’m not one of those people who used to complain about FIR being too long (can you get too much of a good thing?). Keep it coming!

  2. No way! This is fantastic news. I will certainly be adding that to my weekly audio intake. Glad to see another great FIR idea come to light. Now, if we could only get those outtakes, flubs, and bloopers in the feed, too.

  4. Great idea. I’m subscribed. Now I wonder what would be the tag for this one? Sounds great, less filling? Half the calories of their regular podcast? I believe in FIR lite because I believe in me? Where are our wordsmiths?

  5. Interesting idea, however, rather than just using this feature for the existing cutting room floor material, I would use it as an opportunity to reduce the length of the regular podcast

With all due respect, I find many of the topics you cover to be interesting, but: a) the show could be edited a little tighter; b) each episode could have more focus; and c) I think it’s a bit much to assume your listeners have two hours a week.

Get the main show down to 30-45 minutes per episode, and provide a rich vault of extras for those who feel they need a bigger fix of you two.

  6. Horay! It’s only been almost a year since this was suggested. I’ve been playing over and over again the few cuts that weren’t since that time. Now I’ve got some new favorites to choose from… :-)

  7. I like the idea; I wonder how you’ll manage, though :)

  8. Colin,
Many FIR listeners recall the first 175-185 shows, many of which ran 75-85 minutes per show…twice a week. While I was a huge fan of the longer shows, the FIR survey results pointed towards keeping the episodes under 60 minutes. It’s a miracle that our two Powerhouse Hosts can record two shows a week And cut the content down to that length. I for one would hate for the News, Correspondent’s Reports, or Listener Comments to be cut out, even as a separate feed each week, because those are the parts that make up the whole FIR experience. Those are the elements of the conversation between all of the members of the FIR Community. And one or more of those parts would have to go in order to cut the episodes any further.
    Anyways, that’s my $.02 USD.
    Love & Peace, Clarence
