FIR in Second Life

We’ve just set up shop in Second Life, the virtual world where there’s already a growing community of podcasters.

FIR in Second Life

The FIR Shop is located on the ground floor in the Podcasters Mall on Podcast Island. If you’re a member of the Second Life community, teleport to the island at 139,75,25 and follow the red arrow to get to the store.

It’s pretty bare bones at the moment as the screenshot shows, but we’ll be spending a bit of time there in the coming weeks getting the place a bit more ship-shape. We’ll also be talking in upcoming FIR episodes about what we’re planning to be doing in Second Life.

We look forward to seeing you there - Shel Witte and Jangles Junot. No prizes for guessing which of us is which!

  1. I’m a recent subscriber and have found some very interesting stuff on your podcasts so thanks. (Like most people I define interesting as being largely in line with my own views! But there’s some thought provoking stuff there too.)

It’s interesting to see you in Second Life. I’ve looked at it a couple of times and walked away for two reasons - 1. A natural resistance to handing over credit card details for a free subscription and 2. For fear that I’ll spend too much time there.

I’ve been in PR for the best part of 30 years. Interestingly, I’m the oldest bugger in our small consultancy and I’m convinced that blogging (and podcasting) is something we need to get a grip on but I’m having the devil’s own job convincing the youngsters. Irony doesn’t come close.

I’ve just started a blog based around our business (communications in support of planning applications and consultation) at http://communicatingplanning.wordpress.com

  2. I followed you posting and enrolled in SL. Then downloaded the program, then entered the world…then I could not for the ‘second life’ of me work out how to teleport to your site, nor did it show up on a search.  As I spent an hour on this I became increasingly frustrated by the SL experience - too complex, too involved and the feeling one needs to spend hrs to get to know it.  I felt like your commentator above.  I am pretty geeky for a 50 yrs old but SL leaves me ‘dead’ despite everyone telling me that I need to understand to ‘be involved’.  All in all I remain to be convinced. I’ll stick with my blogs and pods and wikis for the moment.  Cheers, Mark

  3. Hi Shel Witte and Jangles Junot,

Unlike the first two commenters I (was luckly?) to find my way to the “FIR Booth” quite easily via the navigational link you provided.

I really, really like the Second Life experience so far, but oh boy, can this get addictive! No more than 1/2 per day for me!!

Hope to see you both around in SL some times and hopefully some other listeners as well. Today I have been at your Booth for 1/2 hours and only talked to some kind of Wizard!

See: http://www.shapingthoughts.com/2006/06/26/my-first-second-life-experience (not sure the trackback is working from my side)

    Best regards,
    Marcel

  4. Shel and Neville,

Sorry I missed you in our first life when you guys where in New York. Unfortunately I won’t be meeting you in your second life as I just don’t have the time to get involved in a virtual world. My real world is challenging enough.

I would like to hear you both talk about the reasons why you were compelled to take part in Second Life and what you’re gaining from your time in there. It seems like a thing that takes up a lot of time and I’d like to hear your perspective on why people should make the investment of time in being involved there.

Thanks for continuing to product quality podcast content.

    Rob

  6. Okay—how did you get the banner into your cubicle? How do I get one into mine (next door but one to yours, on the left)

  7. Neville will have to answer that one, Lee…it was his undertaking!
