FIR on Higher Education #13: An Interview with Fortune Managing Editor Andy Serwer

Have an interesting pitch that might resonate with a reputable publication like Fortune Magazine / fortune.com? In episode 13 of FIR on Higher Education, Fortune managing editor Andy Serwer talks about how to approach this.

Andy also discusses the state of business journalism in 2014, how Fortune is innovating and its split from Time Inc.

Among his advice to commentators and professors on conducting interviews: “Have a focused idea. Have a real voice and have something that is differentiated. People’s attention spans are shorter and shorter and so you have to keep things succinct. There is a rythmn to having a conversation or interview.”

To PR professionals, he advises: “Do your homework. People write me and say ‘Dear Andrew’. That is my name but no one calls me that. When someone sends me that, it shows they don’t know me.”

After the interview, I provide a short report on Serwer’s actual talk to students at UNC School’s of Journalism, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk discusses how Facebook advertising can be leveraged by higher education communicators during crisis situations.

About Andy Serwer

Andy Serwer, the managing editor of Fortune, was named one of the 100 most influential business journalists of 2007 by NewsBios.com. Serwer is based out of Time Warner’s New York City office.  He has been managing editor at Fortune since November, 2006.

Shortly after graduating from Bowdoin College in 1981, Serwer joined the magazine as a reporter in 1984 and was later promoted to associate editor. Between 1995 through 1998, Serwer held the position of senior writer for the magazine. During his tenure at the magazine, he wrote a number of cover stories including ones on Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, John Chambers, Cisco Systems, among many others.

Before becoming managing editor of Fortune, Serwer was a regular contributor on CNN’s “American Morning”, and was a co-host of CNN’s “In The Money”. He has also appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America as well as a number of other national television shows including “The Today Show” and “The Tony Danza Show”. He has also written for Time, Sports Illustrated and SLAM Magazine.

FIR on Higher Education #11: Professor Vincent Mangematin on MOOCs’ Disruption

MOOCs are hotly debated and many questions linger. There is no doubt that they are causing disruption. Vincent Mangematin, a professor at France’s Grenoble Ecole de Management, wrote in the Financial Times that MOOCs will leave behind a trail of failed global business schools.

Given this disruption, how should academics innovate in the way they go about presenting knowledge and fostering learning? How can marketers use MOOCs as an opportunity to position programs and their school’s brand? These are among the questions that I ask Vincent on FIR on Higher Education episode 11.

If you are a professor, have you changed the way you teach given new technologies? And if you are a marketer or communicator, have you been involved in a MOOC project to help in a branding effort? We would love to hear your experiences. Feel free to share in the FIR Google+ community.

In our reports segment, I discuss how Wabash College used social media to raise over $465,000 in one day, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk discusses hastag use in the classroom.

About Vincent Mangematin

Vincent Mangematin is associate dean of research and senior professor of management and technology at the Grenoble Ecole de Management in France. Vincent’s research interest focuses on innovation processes in technological competition situations. He has successively worked on technology transfer, especially individuals’ movement between organizations and technology platforms, on creation and growth of high-tech startups, on clusters’ influence and on the emergence of new business models.

FIR On Higher Education

Gini Dietrich, CEO of Arment Dietrich and author of Spin Sucks, has just made FIR history! Gini has appeared as a guest on two different shows within the FIR podcast network in one month, providing great insights to two separate audiences.

Earlier this month, Martin Waxman and Joe Thornley interviewed Gini about her new book Spin Sucks on the Inside PR podcast (a show which Gini co-hosts). In the most recent episode of For Immediate Release on Higher Education, Gini shares tips and tactics for individuals within academia. She outlines:

- How professors can mobilize ambassadors to help promote their new books and how marketers / communicators can support the process.
- How to build community on blogs (whether as an individual academic or a marketer / communicator representing a school brand).
- How to deal - and prevent - crisis communications scenarios (such as the case of a University of Wisconsin professor whose political opinions in an assignment email to students spiraled into a controversy).
- And more!

In our reports section, I talk about visual communications within higher education, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk analyzes how YouTube is impacting youth culture and how that might influence college life.

About Gini Dietrich

Gini Dietrich is the founder and CEO of Arment Dietrich, a Chicago-based integrated marketing communication firm. She also is the founder of the professional development site for PR and marketing pros, Spin Sucks Pro, co-author of Marketing In the Round, and author of the new book Spin Sucks. FIR on Higher Education #8 - Professor Amanda Sturgill on Teaching Interactive Media

FIR On Higher Education

Odds are that if you are over the age of 30 and studied communications during your time in college / university, much of what you learned back in the day is now completely outdated. And there is probably a good chance that communications students today will say the same thing years from now.

Digital communications is changing so fast, so what is the best way to teach it to students so that they have the necessary skills to enter the workplace and then the mindset to evolve with technological advances? I asked this question to professor Amanda Sturgill, who teaches interactive communications at Elon University in North Carolina. Amanda provides best practice on building curriculum within a university environment, and also shares insights on how professionals can educate ambassadors within organizations.

In our reports section, I provide an overview on why every communicator needs to be an educator, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk reviews the educational tool Voice Thread.

About Amanda Sturgill

Amanda Sturgill teaches classes in writing, general studies and the interactive media graduate program at Elon University. A Ph.D. graduate of Cornell University, she has professional experience in newspaper journalism and marketing communications. Her research focuses on the intersection of education and community-based work, the relationship of religiou and media and on new technologies and the news. You can follow her on Twitter @DrSturg.
