FIR on Higher Education #16: Professor Michael Netzley on Communications in Asia

Many FIR listeners have grown accustomed to hearing Michael Netzley’s “This Week in Asia” reports on the Hobson and Holtz Report. I am thrilled to introduce Michael to the FIR on Higher Education audience on episode 16.

Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael

In this episode, Mitchell and Michael talk with #ThoughtLeader Tatyana Kanzaveli (http://www.linkedin.com/in/tkanzaveli). As organizer of TEDx in the Bay Area and mentor to business startups, Tatyana shares her thoughts about what makes a good event, about the importance of social connections, and the use of analytics to everyday communication. Tatyana thinks #ThoughtLeadership is not single-dimensional, and likens it to a recipe with ingredients like expertise and innovation that are mixed together and sprinkled with communication. #ThoughtLeaders are not necessarily subject matter experts, but they have original ideas and are not afraid to speak their minds.

Tatyana KanzaveliIn the conversation, Tatyana shares some best practices in organizing events like TEDx. She reveals why she decided to make her TEDx shows even shorter than the usual 18 minutes, noting that limiting the talk to 12 minutes allows speakers to just nail it and pushes them to focus on the idea. The best way to organize successful events is to really care for the people who are coming to watch it and make sure you deliver the best experience for them before, during, and after the event. Tatyana says she always tries to find ways to connect people attending the event by setting up LinkedIn groups, sharing as many Twitter handles of all attendees, and using all communication channels to make introductions. She also emphasizes the importance of being connected, not for the sake of collecting followers, but because you want to learn more about people you admire. Communicating on social media is not about numbers, it’s about real people and interacting with those whom you share similarities.

Tatyana also answers questions about the tools she uses for social media monitoring, her tips about good mentorship, and why “TLC” is important. She shares how, after 20 years in the industry, she remains passionate about doing the things she cares about.

FIR B2B #14: Yes, You Can Be Funny Just Like Tim Washer

Google has taken it upon itself to move “unsubscribe” links to the top of emails, as if it’s encouraging marketers to clean out their email lists. At the risk of being a bit schoolmarmish, Google is actually enforcing some good marketing practices. No one should be proud of 20% open rates. Another Google innovation we like is phone numbers tied to AdWords. Marketers can now match phone numbers to click patterns to see which sequences prompt people to pick up the phone. This could be particularly useful to B2B marketers.

Could LinkedIn be a future competitor to Salesforce.com? It isn’t saying that at the moment, but some of its recent moves around content marketing and lead generation make LinkedIn look an awful lot like a CRM provider. Now we understand why it’s never licensed that user database.

Elisa Gabbert’s interview with Moz’s Erica McGillivray on how to manage online communities is worth a read for any B2B marketer who manages a LinkedIn group or other community. The principles that Moz practices - be responsive, reward contributors and don’t tolerate trolls - are appropriate for any situation in which many people gather online.

Our special guest is Tim Washer, who may be the funniest person in B2B marketing. Washer’s breakthrough work was Mainframe: Art of the Sale, a hilarious serious of six videos he produced at IBM that spoofed the technology selling process and earned his employer praise for its willingness to laugh at itself. It also drove a 25-fold increase in traffic to the mainframe website.

Washer joined Cisco four years ago, where has continued his gift for absurdity with classics like The Perfect Gift for Valentine’s Day, from Cisco and Engineer Battles the World’s Most Rugged Router. FIR Interview: Melissa Agnes and Gerard Braud debate “going dark” with social media in a crisis

 

Dueling headlines

Social media has become a standard component of crisis communication efforts. In an August 6 blog post, crisis communications and media training consultant Gerard Braud of Braud Communications argued that there could be crisis situations in which institutions would be best served by taking down their Facebook page or other social media outposts. Looking at the flood of negative, critical, and even outrageous comments left to Emory Healthcare’s Facebook page after the hospital began treating an Ebola victim, Braud concluded, “Sometimes in a crisis, you may find that it is in your best interest to rely on conventional crisis communications tools. It may be better to take your social media sites down completely until the crisis is over. If people need information, they are smart enough to find it on your primary website.”

Melissa Agnes, president and co-founder of Anges+ Day, a crisis intelligence consultancy, took exception in a response on her own blog. “Social media presents so many powerful opportunities to communicate and build trusting relationships with your audiences,” Agnes wrote. “Just because people may vent and lash out against your organization is not a reason to hide and refuse to communicate on the channels that demand communication these days. Doing so will only hurt your organization’s reputation.”

Braud and Agnes engaged in a very professional conversation in the comments sections of their posts. In this interview, FIR co-host Shel Holtz talks with both crisis experts about their points of view, where they agree and where they differ, the role of social media generally in a crisis, and how that role could vary depending on the nature of the organization and its social media presence.
