FIR on Higher Education #20 – Professor David Burkus on the Myths of Creativity

How can we be more creative in our work? Whether you are a communicator wanting to come up with new ways to share thought leadership, a professor considering innovative ways to teach new concepts to students or a consultant / entrepreneur looking for new business opportunities, many of us are on the hunt for new ideas. On episode 20 of FIR on Higher Education, I discuss this topic with Oral Roberts University professor David Burkus, author of the Myths of Creativity.

David is one of the few academics I have come across who is leveraging the power of podcasting. He hosts an excellent podcast called Leader Lab (LDRLB) and shares his podcasting journey during the interview.

FIR on Higher Education #19 – Dorie Clark on Building a Personal Brand


Probably most all of us want to innovate, grow and develop in different ways throughout our careers. On episode 19 of FIR on Higher Education, I discuss this topic with Dorie Clark, author of Reinventing You, an executive education instructor and a former presidential campaign spokeswoman. Dorie shares the following:

• How academics can build their individual brand and how this leads to new opportunities.
• The new realities of book publishing.
• Keys to developing a content strategy.

FIR on Higher Education #15: Research on Social Media Influencer Personality Traits

Social media influencers – are they born or made?

University of Louisville Professor Karen Freberg discusses this question on FIR on Higher Education #15. Karen and her colleagues have done research on social media influencer personality traits based on a study of Brian Solis, Deidre Breakenridge, Jeremiah Owyang and Charlene Li. Karen shares the methodology to the research and its application for communicators.

She also discusses how she integrates social media into her classroom and how she uses Instagram as a professor.

FIR on Higher Education #14: Best Practice Media Training Tips from Des Dearlove

What does it take to be a top management thinker? Among the criteria is the ability to be an excellent communicator, says media trainer, former journalist and Thinkers 50 co-founder Des Dearlove on FIR on Higher Education #14.
