  1. Seems like this “rhymes with” meme might be taking off. Everyone who heard my presentation at BACN last month is calling me “Rhymes with Sketch” now, or even “Ms Sketch.” Wonder if I can trademark it? ;-)

With regard to the Guiness blog—if they’re serious about only letting UK viewers see the site, they should track IP addresses.

Every time you mention the New Communications Forum, I get grumpier and grumpier. It’s practically in my back yard, and I can’t go. Worse yet, it looks as if you two will be pretty much locked up for the whole time, so I can’t even come down for an hour and meet you over coffee. Grrrrrrr.

  2. Hi Neville & Shel,

I couldn’t resist posting a comment after the other Sallie with an “ie” ending.  Small blogoshpere!

I’m writing to thank you for the great review you gave WELS.net in your show on February 20th. It was exciting to hear that you are showing your clients our site.  Several of the members of our web and communication teams were fortunate enough to hear one of Shel’s presentations at a conference in the Fall of 2004. We listened and took to heart the advice he gave there regarding the participatory nature of this new era of communication and many enhancements to WELS.net grew out of that conference and other experiences.

Your mention generated quite a bit of excitement in our offices, an Imprint blog post (http://www.wels.net/imprint) from our CTO, Martin Spriggs, and even a press release, which you can read online at http://www.wels.net/jumpword/welsnews (RSS enabled for your convenience :-)).

Speaking of our CTO, it is Martin along with our webmaster, Julie Duran, who are the true visionaries behind the WELS.net web site.  I’m just happy to be a part of the team.

Keep up the great podcast guys!  We continue to listen and learn.

P.S. I offer this as a help when explaining who we are - WELS or the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod is the third largest Lutheran church body in America with a membership of over 400,000.

  3. Hi Guys,

Regarding your discussion of influence and authority, it seems that there’s a pretty long way to go in getting key decision makers to consider something other than crude metrics (e.g. counts) for performance.

Just after listening to your latest show, this (short) article came across my desk - http://au.news.yahoo.com/060222/21/y0cj.html - talking about one of our opposition leaders looking at counting his shadow cabinet’s media appearances and - get this - press release output! as a performance measure.  Clearly this type of leadership is a long way from even recognising social media’s in the room.

  4. Guys:

Enjoying the show as always.  I wanted to cast a vote in favor or Luke Armour’s open that you played last week.  Good choice of clips by Luke!  I might suggest a couple of tweaks to the levels, but I can send those ideas along to Luke directly.  Hopefully you’ll give serious consideration to using the open in future shows.

What is your reaction to the announcement that the wildly-popular Ricky Gervais Show podcast will now be available only through Audible.com, and that we’ll have to pay if we want to continue to listen to it?

My take is that it’s disappointing.  Part of the attraction of listening to podcasts is that they’re free. I understand that the bandwith costs for hosting a podcast that receives hundreds of thousands of downloads per episode must be exhorbitant, but surely there have to be more imaginative ways for the show to cover their costs—and even earn a profit. Undoubtedly, the podcast would command a pretty penny for a couple of advertisements per show, which could be weaved into each episode in a comedic way. A paid model, I believe, will kill off much of the show’s audience. Count me as one of the many who isn’t willing to plunk down $6.95 a month for this show, as funny as it is.

Many in the podcasting world will be watching this development closely.  It could set the stage for a formal paid model for podcasts in the future.

    Keep up the great work!

  5. Hi Shel and Neville,
It’s been about a year since Sallie Draper, our technology trainer spoke of our WELS podcasts which appeared on your blog. We thank you for that mention and wonderful comments. Our web crew has been busy over this past year we’re soon to debut our new media site, Streams.  We’ve had the beta version live since Christmas eve and have been working on final enhancement. After all, web work is NEVER done ;)

We plan to roll out further enhancements soon. You’ll wnat to keep an eye on our Imprint blog (wels.net/imprint) for our CTO, Martin Spriggs to announce the “go live” date for Streams. You’ll find Video, Podcasts, Radio and even Live events on Streams. We strongly feel it is the wave of the future when communicating to the world. After all, we feel we have the best message of all to deliver (The Word of God) - at WELS, content is King… literally!

It is truely amazing that we can deliver our content using the same tools that the “big guys” use in the industry with a small staff. Yes, we depend on outside expertise to get us there, but its doable. It is important to let other organizations (especially non-profits) be aware that they may communicate at a level of quality that wasn’t obtainable previously when publishing to the masses in days of old (i.e. well known magazines, newspapers, television and commercials).

“Hello world”,  has a whole new meaning ;)

    J Duran
