Testing FIR at high speed
Testing FIR at high speed
In FIR #155 yesterday, we spoke of our experiment re show length and our target of aiming for a 60-minute show. We also included an audio comment from Eric Tobler who had a proposal for creating a version of the MP3 file that reduces the show length (time) by a considerable amount.
Eric has generously responded with a version of yesterday’s show that has reduced the length from 69 minutes to just under 43 minutes.
If you’d like to listen and let us know your opinion about this potential solution to show length, download the MP3 and let us know what you think by a leaving a comment to this post. Or you can listen right now from this page:
Thanks. And especially, thanks to Eric.
I shouldn’t really be complaining, because I don’t mind the show length. Either I have the time or it piles up. But. The sped-up version is not for me, it is too fast. Nothing more really I can say about that.
Posted by Sebastian on 07/18 at 09:55 AMWe want a speeding-button built into iTunes and Media Player!!
;-) And imagine, if we could have one in real life, so we could speed up some people who are a little slow speaking - we could save a lot of valuable time ;-)Posted by Karin Hoegh on 07/18 at 11:43 PMI definitely second the real life button. Some people, OMG…
Posted by Sebastian on 07/19 at 12:05 AMThis is way too fast in my opinion, im getting stressed after just listining for two minutes.
A speed button might be useful for some FIR listeners, but I would always perfer the full show length and speed.Posted by Adam K on 07/19 at 03:52 AMThis pitch-constant speeding up technique is well-known to musicians, and there are a lot of packages (even Audacity) that can do it. If you like the effect, you can actually do it yourself at home on the PC with any of your MP3 files. One thing I’ve got installed is a plug-in for Winamp called DAFX, which allows you to mess with the tempo while the MP3 plays. You can either make the file play faster, or slow it down and enjoy Shel & Neville talking for two hours like two guys on an overdose of mogadon.
Posted by Martyn Davies on 07/19 at 04:03 AMInteresting change, however this should be USER controlled, not forced upon the listner, provide a regular playback, a sped up like this and one in between.
I find this rate also ‘stressful’—slow it down a bit and you may find a happy medium.
I’m waiting for ipod to offer such a feature as well.
Posted by Jeremiah Owyang on 07/19 at 07:48 AMI’d say leave it as recorded - the audio quality was really poor and way to choppy for my listening - I bailed out 37 seconds into it.

I couldn’t handle it. I started twitching about two minutes in. Podcasts are great for listening to while doing other stuff. I felt I had to concentrate fully on this to understand it.
The format would be fine in a 1-minute show or something. But 45 minutes of it would kill me!
Posted by Jeremy Wright on 07/19 at 01:50 PMFor the truly pressed-for-time, this technique could be used to listen to The M Show in just over six minutes.
Posted by Martyn Davies on 07/20 at 08:46 AMThe audio jumps are very disjointing. I could only make it about two minutes through. Too Alvin-Simon-Theodore-esque for me. I like Jeremiah’s suggestion of something not quite this fast, and something that we can control from our end.
So for now, I’ll take Shel and Neville at regular speed. And don’t forget: they’re making a genuine effort to get the time down on their own!
And Martyn, I don’t mind giving John Wall from The M Show a full 10 minutes of my attention! He’s worth it.
Posted by Bryan Person on 07/20 at 10:19 AMFor that matter Bryan, I don’t mind giving Shell and Neville my attention for 60-90-120 minutes at a time. I think it’s worth it.
