FIR on Higher Education #27: Professor Cynthia Bulik on How to Deliver Your Message to the Media
This link will take you to a terrific CBS media interview conducted by University of North Carolina Professor Cynthia Bulik, an expert on eating disorders. Impressively, she answers six different questions in a three-minute time period. She communicates all her key talking points and even gets her book mentioned. How does she accomplish this, and how can you do the same? On episode 27, Cynthia shares some of her best practice. Among her key points:
• “Research doesn’t do a whole lot if it just stays in the ivory tower.”
• “My goal is to take what I do and find the lowest common denominator of vocabulary so that the maximum number of people can understand it.”
• “A concise message is a clear message. You don’t want to have to go digging through to find what the kernel is. I want the kernel to be front and center.”
• “Get media training and do it often.”
• “Watch yourself. So many people will do an interview and then say ‘Oh I can’t watch or listen to that.’ But you are your best critic. Have your parents watch it, have your friends watch and have them give you honest feedback. Find someone who can tell you what you are doing wrong.”
If you want to improve in how you come across in media interviews, you won’t want to miss hearing Cynthia’s insights. Ditto if you are communicator looking to provide insights to your colleagues.
In our reports section, I share some thoughts on academics can avoid jargon, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk previews an interview he did with Dan Zaiontz, author of #FollowTheLeader, which highlights lessons in social media success from university presidents.
About Cynthia Bulik
Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., FAED, is Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders in the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is also Professor of Nutrition in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, and founding director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. FIR on Higher Education #26: Re-thinking how we Approach Media Training
Being in a foreign country and unable to speak the local language can be frustrating for many. On the other hand, knowledge of a local language usually opens up lots of new horizons and opportunities. The same is true for academics and how they communicate their expertise to public audiences. Many academics are uneasy about how to communicate to external audiences because they haven’t been trained. Once media trained or through trial and error, this mindset changes. Academics can then leverage the opportunities of speaking to the traditional press, leveraging social media and creating content on owned platforms.
Episode 26 is a bit different than our usual show format. I just launched my new Media Training for Academics online course and share some of what I’ve learned in a discussion with our technology correspondent Harry Hawk. Among the topics we discuss:
- Why external communications matters for academics and the need for media training
- The flaws with typical infrequent media training workshops
- The pros and cons of an online format for media training
- Why trainings need to be integrated, covering owned (content you own on your platform), earned (media relations) and shared (social media) media.
- Why marketers and communicators need to think about creating online courses as a means to position their organization.

FIR on Higher Education #23: Social Media and Academic Freedom
Steve Salaita, a tenured professor, was all ready to make the leap from Virginia Tech to the University of Illinois. In fact, he had resigned from his job at Virginia Tech. But then, his job offer at U of I was rescinded, allegedly because of anti-Semitic tweets.
David Guth, a professor at the University of Kansas, posted insensitive tweets about the NRA following the Navy Yard shooting last year, which led to the institution suspending him and changing its social media policies.
Both these stories have led to significant debate about academics’ use of social media and academic freedom.
On episode 23 of FIR on Higher Education, social media attorney Scott Malouf offers his analysis and provides insights on using social media from a legal perspective. He also provides some best practice on how to go about drafting and reviewing social media policies.
In our reports section, we cover the film Ivory Tower an article that appeared on Marketing Profs about how internal online training can help organizations and different learning technologies.
This episode is sponsored in part by Experiential Communications’ forthcoming Online Media Training Program for Academics.
About Scott Malouf
Scott is a social media attorney. He helps litigators turn social media into court-ready evidence, reduce the cost of social media discovery, find evidence in unexpected places and identify new claims and strategies arising from social media. He also assists corporate and business attorneys in creating corporate social media programs that achieve business, compliance and legal objectives. More information at www.scottmalouf.com.
