The focus is on email marketing on next FIR Live

FIR Live #16
Saturday, August 22, 2009
10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. UK

One study suggests that 85% of organizations plan to increase their email marketing efforts. But another finds that two-fifths of marketers don’t even know if their email messages are being delivered successfully; those who are aware of delivery failures don’t have the tools to make sure those messages find their way to the right inbox. In the meantime, IT departments and individuals do anything they can to keep a lot of those messages out of their inbox.

In this episode of FIR Live, we’ll talk with experts about email marketing, what works and what doesn’t. John Wall, author of the Ronin Marketeer blog and co-host of the “Marketing Over Coffee” podcast, will join us, along with Greg Cangiolosi of email shop BlueSky Factory. Representing Return Path, the organization behind the study, “E-Commerce Opportunities,” will be Tami Forman, the company’s director of Corporate Communications. And it’s altogether possible Christopher S. Penn, John Wall’s co-host, will also drop by.

Please join us with your questions, observations, and stories.

FIR Live #16 is set for Saturday, August 22, 2009, at 10am PDT, 1pm EDT, and 6pm in the UK. You can take part in the show by calling in to +1 347 324 3723. You can listen in live at the same number as well as online at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/fir. You can also join in the chat by text in the chat room.

After the live show, the recording will be made available as a podcast as usual as part of the Hobson & Holtz Report.

We hope you’ll join us on August 22.

Gary Vaynerchuk on the next FIR Live

FIR Live #15
Friday, June 26, 2009
10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. UK

An activity almost guaranteed to provoke reactions from people far beyond the PR community is that of pitching: the act of “stretching my imagination and getting me excited,” according to one definition via Twitter.

It’s part of the bread and butter of the PR business. It’s also an activity that many who do it get it very wrong indeed, say many who are on the receiving end, especially bloggers and others who use social media.

The next FIR Live on Blogtalk Radio on June 26 will look at PR pitching, taking as a specific example an email pitch conducted in early June on behalf of entrepreneur, personal branding expert and video blogger Gary Vaynerchuk.

We’re thrilled to have Gary as a guest on this live episode, together with John Cass whose post about the email pitch engaged a number of people in conversation with Gary; as well as John Bell, head of the 360° Digital Influence team at Ogilvy PR which produced Ogilvy’s Blogger Outreach Code of Ethics and Austin-based communicator Connie Reece.

FIR Live #15 is set for Friday June 26, 2009, at 10am PDT, 1pm EDT, and 6pm in the UK.

We hope you’ll join us on June 26.

FIR Live #14: May 26, 2009

Content Summary: Communicators are often frustrated in their efforts to protect or restore an organization’s reputation by attorneys who simply block any communication at all, or minimize the response. In today’s FIR Live, attorney Jim Golden and crisis expert Helio Fred Garcia discuss the relationship between attorneys and communicators and how it should change.

Discussion participants were FIR co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz. In addition, we were joined by the following guests:

Jim Golden negotiates early reasonable settlements in complex accident and commercial disputes, avoiding or shortening litigation and significantly reducing client costs. Adapting theory learned at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School to the practical needs of firm clients, he provides leadership in an area of legal practice he describes as “negotiation counsel.” He has spoken in venues including the Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, International Institute of Conflict Prevention and Resolution, Corporate Counsel Summit, Association of Corporate Counsel and the ABA Transportation Megaconference.

Helio Fred Garcia is the president and founder of the crisis management firm LOGOS Consulting Group, and is the executive director of the LOGOS INSTITUTE for Crisis Management & Executive Leadership. He is widely regarded as a leading expert in crisis management and crisis communication. He has 29 years of experience counseling securities firms, banks, insurance companies, specialized financial and professional service firms, corporations, not-for-profits, and governments. He has particular expertise in crisis management, corporate litigation support, struggles for corporate control, international financial transactions, securities offerings, corporate governance, and business ethics.

(Our third guest, UK-based law academic and commentator Mike Semple Piggot, was unfortunately unable to join us for the discussion.)

PR and lawyers: Next on FIR Live

FIR LiveIt’s not unusual for communicators to feel stifled by corporate attorneys whose counsel, often viewed as contrary to the organization’s reputational interests, is rubber-stamped by CEOs. IN the next FIR LIveNeville and Shel will look at communicators’ perceptions of lawyers (the myths and the realities), explore ways legal and communications can work together, and discuss whether attorneys’ judgments are always best for the company. Our special guests include Helio Fred Garcia, president and founder of the crisis management firm LOGOS Consulting Group and executive director of the LOGOS INSTITUTE for Crisis Management & Executive Leadership, and a UK-based attorney to be named shortly

law academic and commentator Mike Semple Piggot, aka CharonQC, the man behind Charon QC The Blawg and Insite Law Magazine podcasts.

JUST ADDED: Jim Golden, Chattanooga, Tennessee-based attorney specializing in negotiation of early reasonable settlements in complex accident and commercial disputes, avoiding or shortening litigation and significantly reducing client costs. Adapting theory learned at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School to the practical needs of firm clients, he provides leadership in an area of legal practice he describes as “negotiation counsel.” Golden, who has represented the trucking industry, among others, has views about what companies can and could say that run counter to what you hear from most corporate counsel.

FIR Live #14 is set for Tuesday, May 26 at 10 a.m. PDT, 1 p.m. EDT, and 6 p.m. London.

Please join us with your questions, observations, and stories. Call in at +1.347.324.3723 to listen or to join the conversation, or listen in on the FIR Live page at BlogTalk Radio.

FIR Live #13: April 25, 2009

Content Summary: Writing in ReadWriteWeb on April 7, Marshall Kirkpatrick provided the framework for this FIR Live discussion to address a thorny question: Is social media monitoring critical or creepy?

Our discussion explored many aspects of the increasingly-popular business activity of monitoring social media for references and mentions of you, your brand, your company, or any other topic you’re paying attention to. How does the human, conversational and informal nature of much social media – notably, Twitter – gel with a business need to rapidly acquire information that connects with other monitoring activity such as with automated CRM systems?

Discussion participants were FIR co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz; Chip Griffin, CEO of CustomScoop (disclosure: a sponsor of The Hobson and Holtz report); and Aaron Weber, Insight Manager at Spiral16; plus callers-in and listeners in conversation in the FIR Live chat room at BlogTalk Radio.

Additional perspective on the discussion: conversation and questions (plain-text file, opens in new tab/window) from the FIR chat room at Blogtalk Radio.

FIR Live #13 set for April 25: Is social media monitoring critical or creepy?

FIR Live #13
Saturday, April 25
10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. Wokingham
Listen in

Marshall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb explored both sides of the increasingly popular business activity of monitoring social media. He wrote:

It’s kind of a modern day horror story, isn’t it? Web 2.0’s potential benefit for humanity tragically sold short by social media because it fell under a fog of marketing software. Would-be short-form conversationalists jumping in with CRM-tinted glasses secured to their faces. One of my co-workers says that within minutes of his wife Tweeting about her art studio last night, she was friended by scads of art companies and salespeople. Who wants to have a conversation in that context?

Or maybe it’s just a matter of changing our expectations. Maybe this is all good; the new customer service - a lot like the old customer service, but in your blog comments and replies tab.

In our April FIR Live episode, we’ll talk with CustomScoop CEO Chip Griffin and a senior representative of the new social media monitoring service Spiral 16 for their takes on the issue. And we’ll take your calls. The show is set for Saturday, April 25 at 10 a.m. PDT, 1 p.m. EDT, and 6 p.m. in the UK. You can participate by calling in to +1-347-324-3723. You can listen in live by dialing into the same number or visiting http://www.blogtalkradio.com/fir. The recording will be made available as part of the Hobson & Holtz Report.
