Thought Leader Life with Mitchell Levy, March ‘15: April 17, 2015

Thought Leader Life with Mitchell Levy

Our co-host for the month of March was Jim Canfield (@jimcanfield).

In this episode, Mitchell Levy interviews #ThoughtLeader Jim Canfield, CEO of Renaissance Executive Forums. Jim, who is Mitchell’s #TLL co-host for the month of March, has reached out to thousands of top executives to help them become better leaders of their company by providing a venue where they can share ideas and perspectives with other top executives. The Renaissance Executive Forums currently has over 2,000 members internationally, and after 10 years, it continues to help companies become successful.Jim notes that Executive Forums may seem to tackle various issues, but really there are only five that are discussed repeatedly in different ways: people, process, performance, personal leadership, and planning. Having a forum to discuss these five Ps, getting different ideas and perspectives about them, is the major reason why executives become active in the forum and stick with the group for an average of five years.

Jim Canfield Being a part of an executive forum allows executives not only to share and learn new things, but also to achieve personal growth. According to Jim, through feedback and accountability, group members strive to meet what they promised to achieve. The group holds each other accountable, and thus becomes what Mitchell calls an “ad hoc board.” Executives become better leaders because they see other people do the exact opposite of what they thought was the best way to do things. They realize that it is possible to get good results by doing things differently.

FIR on Higher Education #32: Gregory Galant on the Leveraging Social Media in Media Relations

“The pitch is the first date. You don’t have to tell every detail – you have to get journalists interested.”

This is among the best practice media relations advice Muck Rack CEO Greg Galant shared on episode 32 of FIR on Higher Education. Particularly, Greg delves into the findings from a journalist survey conducted by Edelman and Muck Rack.

Among the topics we discuss:

- How to build relationships with the media using social media
- The importance of sharing positive media coverage in the age of pageview journalism
- How should media relations professionals use social media
- The role of the press release in our digital communications landscape

In our tips and reports section, I talk about the importance of meeting face to face with media, while technology correspondent Harry Hawk provides an update on how he has integrated Vine in the classroom.

About Gregory Galant
Gregory Galant is the cofounder and CEO of Sawhorse Media, a movement to make it easy to find the right people on the social web through products including Muck Rack and the Shorty Awards. Muck Rack is the leading network for journalists on social media which TheNextWeb called “one of the most useful tools ever invented for media professionals”. The Shorty Awards honor the best of social media; past winners include Ricky Gervais, Cory Booker, Conan O’Brien, Sesame Street, Neil Patrick Harris, Mike Bloomberg and NASA.

Previously, Greg was an associate producer at CNN.com where he analyzed the latest trends in citizens’ media. Greg has worked at Newlight Associates, a $120M technology venture capital firm. In 1996, Greg founded Halenet, an award-winning Internet strategy firm while in high school.

To help fellow entrepreneurs, Greg created Venture Voice, a podcast interview series with the founders of Twitter, LinkedIn, The Vanguard Group, Brooklyn Brewery and more. Greg’s a mentor in the TechStars startup accelerator. BusinessWeek named him one of the “Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs”. He’s also a member of Twitter’s exclusive first name club. Thought Leader Life with Mitchell Levy, Episode 64: April 14, 2015

Thought Leader Life with Mitchell Levy

Our co-host for the month of March is Jim Canfield (@jimcanfield) and one of our guests for March was Melissa Burkhart (@FuturoSolidoUSA).

In this episode, Mitchell Levy, together with Renaissance Executive Forums CEO Jim Canfield as co-host for the month of March, talks with Melissa Burkhart on various topics that C-suite executives love to discuss. As the president of FuturoSolido, Melissa provides insights on how many top executives find it lonely at the top. She describes how being a member of a group like Renaissance Executive Forums has given her support and encouragement as the owner of her company. Jim notes that the benefits of being a member of forum groups extend beyond reciprocity (or exchanging referrals) to receiving the help of people whom you trust and look up to. It provides opportunities for getting fresh ideas and perspectives from people who are the top executives of their own organization.

Melissa Burkhart

As a forum group for executives, Renaissance Executive Forums helps develop companies to become successful, enabling leaders to achieve goals. Melissa calls it a place where advice and feedback are brought to the table with absolutely good intentions. Members have a sincere desire for everyone in the forum to be successful. And because members of the forum group come from multiple fields of expertise, you hear different perspectives from people with varied backgrounds.

• “It’s lonely at the top” may sound 1950s, but it’s really true. @jimcanfield#TLL
• There’s no way to describe or quantify the value of knowing there’s a support group to help you out. @FuturoSolidoUSA #TLL
• Proactive change means setting a new direction for the org, from where it is today to where youwould like it to be in the future. @jimcanfield #TLL
• It gives a communal feeling to have an “advisory board” that cares about you & gives relevant answers. @happyabout #TLL

Linked ConversationsWelcome to the latest episode of LinkedConversations with Chuck Hester.

This episode includes a review of interesting features on LinkedIn, including a new LinkedIn Security section where you can get tips on how to protect your personal data on LinkedIn.

Also, I highlight the LinkedIn Education section – a great resource for alumni, employers and especial students looking for the right school.

We’ll also talk about LinkedIn Profile photos, and the need for a business headshot. My friend and professional photographer David Williams wrote a great post on this subject:

The zombie photo is priceless

Finally, I share with you my wife’s struggle with PTSD and the Indigiegogo campaign to help her get a service dog.

FIR Presents Inside PR 406: All Things News

FIR Presents Inside PRIt’s been a big couple of weeks in the worlds of social media and journalism.

Periscope. Meerkat. Facebook hosting news sites. More snow in Ottawa. Oh my!

Facebook is in discussion with several media outlets to move their news into the social network. Facebook is clearly tired of people leaving their site to read news on other sites so they have gone to several news outlets to see if they can strike a deal to have content live there.

The New York Times is considering it for two reasons: They will gain new readers, even if it’s not on their own site, and Facebook has offered a revenue share from advertising.

It’s interesting, to say the least, but we are in disagreement about what this could mean and how it might affect readership, owned content, and access to data.

Nearly two weeks ago, Twitter launched a Meerkat competitor with Periscope. So, within the last month, livestreaming from your bed, the street, or your office has become an overnight sensation.

We’ve tested both while recording Inside PR. Martin has tried it from bed (accidentally). Joe has tried it from his office. And our mutual friend, Eric Tung, even tried it on the airplane.

Both subjects should be watched with careful consideration at what they mean for communicators.

What do you think?

We’d love to hear from you
